irish
http://blogs.tampabay.com/bucs/2009/04/lef...etandgreet.html Leftwich visit more than meet-and-greet? April 09, 2009 There's a chance Byron Leftwich's visit to Tampa might result in a permanent stay. We've learned Leftwich and the Bucs are engaged in earnest talks that could result in the free-agent quarterback signing a contract with Tampa Bay. Leftwich visited with the Redskins last week but hasn't been mentioned much since the start of the free-agency period. Last season, he served as a backup for the Steelers -- a team coached by Bucs coach Raheem Morris' best friend: Mike Tomlin. Don't underestimate that connection. If the Bucs sign Leftwich, it would be the biggest indication yet that they're looking at positions other than quarterback for their early-round draft picks. Tampa Bay has been often linked to Kansas State quarterback Josh Freeman, but the Bucs arguably have a variety of more pressing needs, such as defensive tackle. The Bucs have pretty much vowed to add a quarterback at some point this offseason. If it's Leftwich, he clearly won't be franchise quarterback they've been seeking, but he does give the Bucs someone to at least challenge Luke McCown for the starting job. Remember, they promised you competition, not a Hall of Famer. Anyhow, we'll keep you posted on what, if anything, happens with Leftwich. Posted by Stephen Holder at 5:07:57 PM on April 9, 2009 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- More speculation, which is what should be expected this time of year. However, if Lefty does sign with the Bucs to battle McCown, you'd have to think he has a solid shot of winning the job. And if he does, he'll have Antonio Bryant, Kellen Winslow, Graham, Ward and others at his disposal. Maybe he goes from a nobody (backup), back to a somebody and a #2 fantasy QB? keggerz
http://blogs.nfl.com/2009/04/09/no-deal-in...or-qb-leftwich/ No deal in Tampa for QB Leftwich Posted: Around The Web | NFL.com Staff | Tags: Byron Leftwich, Pittsburgh Steelers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Washington Redskins Byron Leftwich left another city empty-handed. Five days after a visit with the Redskins failed to produce a contract, the free-agent QB departed Tampa without a deal from the Buccaneers, the St. Petersburg Times reports: Now we’re hearing its unlikely the Bucs will sign Leftwich but they are committed to adding a fourth quarterback and wanted to evaluate him. The Bucs are going to work out Kansas State quarterback Josh Freeman next week. The thought here is that Tampa Bay will likely wait until after the draft to add a QB to the mix of Luke McCown, Brian Griese and Josh Johnson. McCown, a five-year NFL veteran, is the Bucs’ No. 1 QB right now, but he has made 42 fewer career starts than Leftwich, a 2003 first-round draft pick of the Jaguars. Leftwich, who also spent one season (2007) with the Falcons, played well for the Super Bowl champion Steelers in 2008, throwing two touchdown passes and no interceptions in five games as Ben Roethlisberger’s backup. Leftwich has said he wants a starting job, although the Steelers have expressed an interest in keeping him as the No. 2 QB.
irish
There's goes that idea. I was actually hoping that he would sign there as I figured he'd make for another possible QB with some solid late round value. We'll see what happens... Thanks for posting that Keg. ETA: Maybe they'll look to draft Rookie Josh Freeman as stated in the article I linked who they seemed to have interest in? irish
So the Bucs signed him after all and I can go back to my previous statement. I was actually hoping that he would sign there as I figured he'd make for another possible QB with some solid late round value.
