whomper
So as you guys know I have been bartending since February. I went to bartending school in January and have been doing about 3-4 shifts a month at a Country club in NJ since Feb. I have never been and still really am not that much of a mixed drink person. I have always been a beer guy. While studying and making these drinks at school I was intrigued by some of them so every weekend I make a new one . I usually just try one. It has been drinks at the whompers house since Feb Wife , sister in law , bro in law, neighbors etc. So here is what we have tried so far and what I thought of it. Keep in mind this is the way the bartending school taught us to make these. You may make them differently. The ones I didnt like also could have been a result of me being new at this and not making them properly. Brandy Alexander 1.5 oz Brandy 1/2 oz Dark Cream De Cacao 2 oz half and half Shake with ice and serve straight up . Top with nutmeg I have come to realize I am not a big Brandy fan but this drink was actually pretty good. It had a rich taste to it but I cant see drinking many of these on a night because they are a little heavy Blood Oragne Martini 2 oz Orange Flavored Vodka 1 oz Campari 1 Oz Orange Juice Shake with ice and serve straight up I had high hopes for this one but ended up dissapointed. It tasted like grapefruit juice. If you like grapefruit juice it may be worth a try Lynchburg Lemonade 1 oz Jack Daniels 1/2 oz Triple sec 2 oz Sour mix Shake Top with 7 up Serve in a big glass including ice I liked this one. I can see this being a great drink in the summer. It was sweet but had a great taste Sidecar 2 oz Brandy 1/2 oz Triple sec 1.5 oz sour mix (or lemon juice) Shake with ice and serve straight up. Sugar the rim and garnish with a lemon This was my least favorite . As I mentioned I dont have much of a taste for Brandy. Those that like Brandy might enjoy this. Kir 1/2 oz Creme de Cassis or Chambord Fill with white wine My wife likes white wine so her and her friends really liked this. I made it with Chambord. You can also make a Kir Royale which you would substitute Champagne in for the white wine. Good variation for those that like white wine Nuts and Berries 1 oz Frangelico 1 oz Chambord Fill with half and half Shake with ice and serve with ice If you like cream drinks this was a tasty one. Its heavy so I cant see drinking many of them but it had a nice nutty flavor with a rasberry taste as well from the Chambord Grasshopper 1.5 oz Green Creme de Menthe 1/2 oz White creme de cacao 2 oz cream Shake with ice and serve straight up Very tasy drink. Almost tasted like liquid chocoalte chip mint ice cream. This was kind of like a dessert. Wont get you hammered as the proof of the ingredients is very low but it tasted pretty good Zombie 1 oz light rum 1 oz dark rum 1/2 oz triple sec 1/2 oz apricot brandy 1/2 oz grenadine 2 oz pineapple juice 2 oz sour 2 oz Orange Juice Shake Top 151 float Garnish Orange and Cherry Shake and serve with Ice in a big glass I made these last night. I didnt think I was going to like it but I loved them. Its pretty sweet and those that get heartburn easily may have trouble with this one but I loved it. As I try new ones Ill post them here. 4/19 Hurricanes Dark rum Triple sec Amaretto Grenadine Pineapple Sour mix Shake and serve with ice Pineapple garnish Blue Hawaiian Malibu Rum Blue Curacao Pineapple juice Alabama Slammer Southern Comfort Amaretto Sloe gin OJ Edited June 6, 2009 by whomper

Muggsy
I've been a bartender for going on 14 years now and your list really made me smile. it was like a stroll down memory lane. If I mentioned most of those drinks to the kids I work with(most of our other bartenders are in the 23-27 range) they would look at me like I had three heads, not to mention the patrons . Some of those drinks were really popular though when I was a rookie. Enjoy your expiramentation, sounds like you're having fun!

Since I work at a country club that does all formal affairs I have a wide age range that I serve to. In the same party I will be serving couples in their 20s doing trendy stuff and couples in their 60's-70's doing some of the old classics. I work with usually 3 other bartenders too and there is usually at least 1 of them that has 20+ years experience so if I do get stuck there is someone there to help out. Traditional 1 oz Gin 1 oz Campari 1 oz Sweet Vermouth My way (via my brother-in-law) 1 - 1 1/2 Gin (I like Bombay Sapphire) 1 Campari splash Dry Vermouth Rocks in a low ball Notes: Compari is a bitter and is not for everyone. Some like it alot and others find it almost undrinkable. The traditional would probably agree with more people. Negroski Same as Negroni but with Vodka

Traditional 1 oz Gin 1 oz Campari 1 oz Sweet Vermouth Oh man. So funny that you would mention this drink. I have a negroni story. My brother got an audition to work at this really nice italian restaurant as their bartender on sundays near our house. He went to bartending school with me. He told the owner he had more experience than he really did because with the bad economy a lot of people have taken up bartending and the market is kind of flooded here. So like an episode of Threes company my brother asks me to sit at the bar and pretend I dont know him this way if he gets stuck on a drink I can feed him the answers. So I spend a few hours at the bar and he is getting by on his own for the most part and doing a great job. I helped him with a garnish or 2 but he pretty much didnt need me. I have a fair amount of drinks to memory but I also brought a small book too just in case we get stumped . So I am just about to leave and the owner comes over and asks my brother for 2 negronis. He says no problem and when the owner walked away he comes over to me . I havent heard of it so I go to my book. The book doesnt have it . Im like at this point and my brother was The owner comes back looking for the negronis and the bartender that was working with my brother didnt know it either. My bro bought some time and finally with a stroke of luck one of the waiters knew it and he whipped them up real quick . He has been their steady sunday guy ever since. That is a tough one. Since being introduced to it, I have had to tell several waitstaff/bartenders how to make one. The only guy who never even flinched was a bartender on a cruise my wife and I took. When I seemed a bit surprised that he knew it so readily he told me about the Negroski. Your story reminded me of the movie Cocktail when Cruise is kinda new and totally in the weeds. His head is spinning and when someone orders a vodka martini he takes a deep breath and responds with something along the lines of "Ok, now what's in that?" I got stumped early on with 2 drinks . A champagne Martini and an Espresso Martini. Espresso Martini is pretty popular and gets ordered a few times a month. Champagne Martini was only that one time. Espresso Martini is Vanilla vodka , white cream de cocao, Kahlua, Espresso (some guys throw in some baileys too) Champagne Martini is Vodka , Chambord, splash pineapple shake it then fill with Champagne
