electricrelish
If this is a ploy to fool everyone, have we ever seen one like this before? http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/04/24/...icket/#comments Report: Rams Buy Sanchez A Plane Ticket Posted by Aaron Wilson on April 24, 2009, 7:42 p.m. EDT The St. Louis Rams have purchased a plane ticket for USC quarterback Mark Sanchez to travel to St. Louis on Sunday, according to Steve Wyche of NFL.com, per our friends at the Red Zone. What does this development mean? It doesn’t necessarily guarantee that the Rams are definitely going to draft Sanchez with the second overall pick of the draft and fly him into St. Louis for an introductory press conference. The Rams might just be plotting contingency plans just in case they draft Sanchez. Or it could be an elaborate smokescreen to get the teams drafting behind them that are interested in Sanchez to initiate trade discussions to move up. Perhaps the Rams buy several plane tickets to lock in the best prices for every potential draft pick that’s garnering serious consideration. In this struggling economy, it makes a lot of sense, especially if they’re refundable fares.
electricrelish
I believe he wanted to stay home during the draft to be with his family, particularly his (I think) 90 yo grandmother. If this is a scam (err, smokescreen) by the Rams, that's fookin' rude. (Unless he's in on it.) Sanchez will be in New York this weekend to promote the EA Sports 2010 NCAA game. electricrelish
Now unless the Rams already signed Sanchez, which I don't know if they can without the first pick being official, then the Rams could be in trouble for violating the league rules. http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/04/24/...-fare/#comments Rams Could Be In Hot Water Over Plane Fare Posted by Mike Florio on April 24, 2009, 8:44 p.m. EDT In response to the story that the Rams have bought a plane ticket for USC quarterback Mark Sanchez, a league source tells us that the Rams might eventually be making an even larger donation in the form of cash or future draft picks. “If the Rams purchased a ticket for Sanchez they are breaking rules,” a league source told us tonight. “They can do no such thing until they are on the clock. I would think the Commish would get a little testy over that.” It’s possible that the Rams didn’t buy a ticket, and that they floated the story to Steve Wyche of NFL.com in order to advance a ruse aimed at getting Redskins owner Daniel Snyder to offer St. Louis a boatload of picks or players to move up to No. 2. But if they went the extra step and actually purchased the ticket — even if they aren’t really interested in Sanchez — they could be in trouble. We still think the Rams don’t want Sanchez, primarily because they have bigger needs. And they have Marc Bulger. Though we wouldn’t be completely surprised by a decision from the Rams to draft Sanchez and trade Bulger, the Rams don’t need to take a bonus acceleration to help get to the salary floor; they currently have only $10 million in cap space, which puts them above the 2009 spending minimum. electricrelish
oh, who was I thinking about then? Well, he did turn down an offer to go to the draft. Originally, he said he had been traveling too much and wanted to stay home with family and friends. But I guess business comes first. Big John
Now unless the Rams already signed Sanchez, which I don't know if they can without the first pick being official, then the Rams could be in trouble for violating the league rules. Correct, they are not allowed to sign anyone before the draft. Only the first team can do so. This rule for some reason is still in effect even if the first team signs someone ahead of time. Big John
When can they sign him? Can they sign him while they're on the clock, but before they officially turn the card in? Once they are on the clock, they can sign him.
