WashingtonD
Hmmm burgers... I have to take exception with their pick for Massachusetts. Not only did they not get the right best burger for the state, but the burger they selected isn't even the best in the city or in Harvard Square for that matter. The only time anyone's going to Christophers for a burger is if Bartley's burger line is too long to wait http://www.mrbartley.com/mrbartleys-home.html (Edited to include link for interested burger hounds visiting Boston) Edited April 30, 2009 by WashingtonD

slambo
Their choice of IN-N-OUT Burger for CA invalidates any opinion they have. If I need advice on good burger joints , I'll ask a huddler

Don't get me wrong it is a really good fast food burger but specialty burger?--NOT

If I need advice on good burger joints , I'll ask a huddler It's a real good fast food burger, but I think this choice goes against the spirit of the whole thing. They couldn't try a little harder for California?
Bier Meister
i agree. in-n-out is my favorite ff burger, but no way i'd call it the best in california. in sf i used to live close to a place called bill's. not many better.

Yeah, if Winstead's is the best Kansas can do, that's pretty damn sorry. My grandpa used to take me there all the time in KC.

In Los Angeles, I'd nominate The Apple Pan's hickory burger. They put some sort of smokey hickory sauce on it which gives the burger a nice tangy kick. TimC
Best burger in Richmond, VA is Roy's Big Burger just off Lakeside Ave. Place has been there since before I was born and their burgers are about as big as a plate and about as thin. Awesome stuff. Cash only, no inside seating, just order from the window, wait for them to cook it and holler out for you to come pick it up, and eat at the picnic table or in your car. Always a long line and worth it.
SheikYerbuti
OK, so in the name of scientific research and as my duty to my fellow Huddlers, we went to find NY's Best Burger. From the OP link: "Burger Joint" - Cheeseburger $7.50 Be warned: This place is tiny, crowded, hard to find and ruthless about burgers. You'll have ground beef on a squishy bun, and you'll like it. The charred patties taste like they were made on a backyard grill. So, in a city without yards, everyone keeps coming back for more. Le Parker Meridien, 119 W. 56th St. New York City. The Sheikette and I went to Le Parker Meridien, and it sure is a swank joint. I don't even want to know what a room costs for a night. After searching the lobby we finally found the sign for the Burger Joint tucked away in a far corner. Just one small neon sign, with a line about 20 deep coming out the door. After about a 20 minute wait, we finally got inside and found a place that looked like a roadhouse burger joint. . .totally out of place for the hotel it's in. Cardboard menu, graffiti'd up walls, diner looking booths and tables. The music was a strange mix (while we were there we heard Elvis Costello's "Angels Want to Wear My Red Shoes", BB King's "The Thrill is Gone", a movement of a Schubert String Quartet amongst other things). The menu was pretty straight forward: Hamburger or Cheeseburger (in fairness they also had a grilled cheese that I'm guessing never gets ordered), fries and soda, beer or milkshake. We both got medium-rare cheeseburgers, mine with everything. Found a booth and got down to business. The Burger Itself: Presentation: Pretty messy. . .lots of topping falling out of the sides before the first bite. (B-) Patty: Asked for medium rare, and got exactly that. Great density. Thick and beefy with a good grill flavor. Could have been a little bigger (A-) Toppings: Very fresh, as they should be when a place is turning over that fast. Dijon mustard was an interesting touch that I liked. Red onion rather than yellow, which I also liked (A) Bread: OK, here's where the place lost me. I think the bread is second most important component of a burger. The bread here was straight-off-the-shelf, grocery-store hamburger buns (Arnold's to be exact). Not toasted, which I don't consider mandatory, but if you're using store bought buns at least you could do something to gussy them up. If you're going to call it the best burger in the state, I'm going to need at least a bakery quality bun. This fell WAY short. (C-) In conclusion, I think this place got the nod because of the interest factor. It's a burger joint placed in an upscale midtown hotel, which is clever and quaint. The fact that it's so tucked away gives it the "I know this little place" appeal. Also the fact that they do burgers, the whole burgers and nothing but the burgers makes it a novelty. Don't get me wrong, this was a GOOD burger. But given the time and resources, I'm sure I'd be able to find dozens of better burgers in New York. darin3
Just got back from Waller and I can once again confirm that Hills has a damn good burger. Driving to Louisiana for Mothers' Day weekend on Friday. We drive right through Waller on the 290. Usually hit that area around lunchtime and usually just do a quickie JiB or something. Hmmm....
