BillyBalata
Make up your mind you old woman or shut up already! -- Vikings Give Favre a One-Week Deadline -- Mon Jun 8, 2009 --from FFMastermind.com fantasy football ESPN's Chris Mortensen and Ed Werder reports Minnesota Vikings HC Brad Childress has given QB Brett Favre a deadline of this week to decide whether he wants to join the Vikes. Favre, however, is apparently reluctant to commit to playing a 19th NFL season without first being more confident the arthroscopic surgery performed recently on his throwing shoulder has succeeded in eliminating all of the problems related to a torn biceps tendon. According to sources, Favre is conflicted between his desire to provide the Vikings with the quarterback he believes is the only thing they lack to be a legitimate Super Bowl contender and his resolve to feel confident enough in his shoulder that it will not undermine his performance as it clearly did with a league-high nine interceptions the final month of last season when the Jets faded from playoff contention. Favre took personal responsibility for the Jets' failure, blaming his painful shoulder for creating a random lack of arm strength and throwing accuracy. Bronco Billy
Please sign with the Vikes, Brett. Please, please, please. It would serve both parties equally, I'm thinking...
Square
Please sign with the Vikes, Brett. Please, please, please. It would serve both parties equally, I'm thinking... I'm hoping it happens for a couple reasons. 1) to watch Packer nation go nuts. 2) the NFC North (which I get a lot of games piped in from) would have a great mix of QBs. Favre, Rodgers, Cutler, & Stafford/Pepper would be worth the price of admission.
Bronco Billy
I'm hoping it happens for a couple reasons. 1) to watch Packer nation go nuts. I'm part of Packer Nation. I promise you that most of them will not go nuts (and most will be lifting beers to Brett, who in his own peculiar manner finds another way for the Packers to trounce the Viqueens yet again). Win-win for Vikings fans. 1) Brett plays well and takes the team deep into the playoffs. or 2) He sucks and the move pushes Chilly out the door. Either way. Randall
So Chilly wants Brett to commit to them but he won't commit to Favre until they know if his arm is OK. Do I have this right? He doesn't know yet if he can play. Give the guy a little time. The Vikings need to give him a little more time unless they're willing to sign him as-is. Brett has stayed quiet this year giving us all a break. I commend him for that.
Savage Beatings
The childress deadline is meaningless IMO. A week from now Childress will ask Brett if he's ready to play for the Vikings. Brett will say, "No." We'll all be fooled once again into thinking that it's over. Then right before Training Camp Brett will call Chilly and say, "Now I'm ready." And he will be signed. Maybe. Why give him time? Mini camps are already here and it's time to start planning. Not sure why you or anyone else feels he has the right to wait and wait and wait. This is yet another reason why I'm glad he's gone. The sum is always greater than the parts. A team can't wait on any player forever. And just because Favre hasn't addressed the media doesn't mean he's stayed quiet. I'm sure he's leaked quite a few things. I can't believe you're still falling for his non-sense. I'm also part of the packer nation, and I think that Favre hurts the Vikings with his wreckless play. That being said, I still don't want to see him in a purple uniform for the reasons Tarkinton gave a few weeks ago on the radio. If he plays for the Vikings, even for a single game, his legacy is tarnished that much more. But if it does happen, I hope Viking fans are wanting to buy some Favre memoribillia, as I'll be ridding myself of it.

No but he knows how ESPN goes bonkers for anything Favre and he has been starving the beast so far. I do think that's an improvement. He's leaked a few things? I read one place where reporters couldn't even get his brother to talk. Why he has to wait? He just had the surgery and from what I hear his arm strength isn't there. I can see him waiting until he believes the strength will come back(even if it takes more time). I don't want to see him in purple either. He retired from the Jets and then the next day reports say he faxed medical reports to the Vikings. Lying to the Jets makes him look pretty bad. If he's like a baseball player who lost his fastball would he want to come back?

They aren't asking him to throw today, they're asking him if he's in. Of course if his shoulder isn't good to go then he won't. You've got two potential starting quarterbacks on your hands, if you wait too long it could be disasterous. And as far as your baseball reference goes... He's already lost his control, so why would losing his fastball stop him?
bpwallace49
Give favre a deadline? Good idea! I am sure that hasnt been tried before by a team that wants him to make up his mind in a timely manner so it doesnt effect the long term plans for the team. Good luck with aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalllllllllllllllllllllllllll that!
CaP'N GRuNGe
Not so fast... http://blogs.startribune.com/vikingsblog/?p=2944 Sirius host refutes ESPN report June 8th, 2009 – 5:42 PM by Judd Zulgad Earlier today, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen and Ed Werder reported that Vikings coach Brad Childress has imposed a deadline of this week for Brett Favre to decide whether he will be the team’s quarterback for the 2009 season. We were told later in the day that Childress had talked about giving Favre a deadline of this week. But did it happen? Pat Kirwan said today on SIRIUS NFL Radio’s “Movin’ The Chains” that there is no deadline for Favre in Minnesota, contrary to what ESPN has reported. Kirwan’s words carry weight on this subject because he is friendly with Childress and frequently has the Vikings coach on as a guest during the season. Here’s the conversation between Kirwin and his co-host Tim Ryan today. Kirwan: “I heard you talking about Brett Favre, every show has been talking about him. I’ve got a couple of things to say. First off, let me make sure I’m clear on this to everyone who is listening. There is no deadline for Brett Favre to come in by Friday. There is zero deadline. The story was made up, it’s not true and trust me on that.” Ryan: “I still think he’s coming July 15. By then he’ll be signed up for the Minnnesota Vikings. ESPN calling it shoulder surgery, the biceps tendon attaches to a point up on the shoulder, did have that thing cleared out. We’ve been talking about it for a couple of months. That if he had the surgery he was coming back. It’s clear Favre’s on his way to Minnesota.” Kirwan: “Favre is on his way to Minnesota and it may be around July 15. It might be earlier. Remember how we said [that] first Step 1 is he healthy enough to play? He’s in the process of having that resolved. Step 2, get a contract done. We don’t think that’s going to be a problem either so the first two hurdles are going to be easy to fly over and then come in and be part of this program. With the OTAs winding down, and maybe that’s a good thing because he’s not ready to throw, and all the business that goes on with football. Maybe it’s better if he comes in at a quiet period of time and gets ready to roll. But I think you’re right on it, I think he’s on his way in. Friday may come and Friday may go and it will have nothing to do with him in a purple uniform.”

The Wolf
Here's another take on this. Favre and Childress are supposed to be friends, correct? What if setting this deadline was planned and Favre is in on it? Something to make Childress and the Vikes look good in the eyes of the public, as if they are in control of a highly uncontrollable situation. Why does this keep happneing with the Favre situation? Nobody can get it right! Horrible horrible journalism. Doesn't anybody fact check anymore? And the thing is, now we're left not knowing if the first source is right or the second. Fricken stupid!
Hugh 0ne
Enjoy, Minnesota. Enjoy. Meh. I think we screwed the pooch multiple times already regarding the QB situation during the Childress era. That being said, if Favre actually ends up being worse than Rosenfels or Jackson, we really haven't lost anything. It's not like we're shelving our future franchise QB to give Favre a shot. We're giving Favre a shot because we have no better options. If it works, great, if not, hopefully Childress gets fired and someone with a brain takes over. Jackass
I don't see any evidence that these "news stories" are something Favre can control. It seems like this year he's tried his best to stay away from the media.

Childress has been hell-bent on not needing a legitimate quarterback up to this point of his career with the Vikes. How did Brad Johnson do with the Cowboys last year? Sucked? Well Chilly went to battle with him for an entire season not as a backup. I don't know the answer to the question of if Favre has anything left in the tank. People writing him off don't know that answer either. The fact of the matter is, that the Jets were not much of a team the year before Favre joined them. When Favre was healthy, the team did ok. When Favre wasn't healthy, the team didn't do as well. I'm willing to say that he can do as much as what the Vikings have had at this point. Easy. Chilly deserves ----> up to this point with the team. That is because of his lack of attention to the quarterback position.
Savage Beatings
Childress called into KFAN this morning... he said that there NEVER WAS a deadline. ESPN got it 100% wrong. Will be interesting to see how ESPN responds to their completely indefensible story.
