for the wine connoisseurs

Wow, that was a really hard test. Every single time, prior to this one, when I come across a test about wine in a newspaper, it's pretty much really basic stuff. I happen to like Chablis, so the first one was easy, but that question pretty much assured this was not going to be such a test. I got 7 right. I missed 2, 8, and 9.

I helps that I have passed the second level of the process (Certified Sommelier) to become a Master Sommelier so I am familiar with some of these questions.

I got 90% and got the Greek question wrong, but I also flat out guessed on another and had to seriously think about 1 other.

FYI the real tests are really that hard, it is a timed test, some of the toughest questions involve German districts (and were not on this quiz) and the blind tastings are what finally separate a Master from a certified Sommelier.

The level one test is 50 questions, ALL like that. The German questions were confusing as hell, and they ask some really obscure questions (like the Greek one) regarding little-known areas like Maderia and wine areas in Israel.

The beginning levels of certification have a LOT more to do with memorizing geography and "book terms" regarding wine than anything else. That is also where you learn how to "decipher" wine by blind tasting methodology.

If you are really geeked about wine, the level one test was hard, but fun to take.

Haven't seen questions like those in a long time... fun little test!

I found the introductory sommelier course to be easy following two days of studying the materials. If I remember correctly, the first test has a 90-95% pass rate of people that take the test the first time. The tests get much harder and have a lower pass rate with the Master Diploma having a 10% pass rate. I think there are still only a few hundred Master's in the world.

I am nowhere near a Master, but still love freaking people out when blind tasting... "How did you know this is an 04 Cab. from Napa!" But then again, I sometimes look like a drunken idiot...

159 current Masters . . . . the pass rate for the blind tasting final exam is only 7%. I heard horror stories from one of the former panel members I am friends with who said occasionally they will purposefully taint a bottle, but the cork back in and show them opening the bottle in front of the test taker during the final to see if they can detect contamination . . . . .
