Green Bay Hall Of Famers

There are 21 Hall of Fame players that played in Green Bay. This doesn't include a few players that played a very small part of their careers with the Packers. It only includes players mentioned as Packers on their website.

Of those 21 players or coaches, 10 ended their careers with other teams. Adding Favre to this list will make it exactly 50% of HOF'ers that ended up with other teams. Obviously in today's NFL, players don't stay with the same team for as long as they once did. Most of these 21 players are not the NFL player of today, so why did so many leave the team?

Cal Hubbard, Johnny McNally, Herber, Lombardi, Jim Taylor, Gregg, Adderly, Ringo, Lofton, and Reggie White are all players that didn't retire as a Packer.

Gregg, not Fregg.

Ringo brought an agent when those were taboo, so was immediately traded to Philly. Lofton ran afoul of the law and traded to Oakland. Most the others were traded in the twilight of their careers, or retired and had a shore unretirement to another team.

And notice that those weren't to rival teams as Favre was demanding.

I can think of a few Vikings off hand that ended their careers with other teams. Alan Page for one. Cris Carter for another if he gets in this year or next. I haven't looked at other teams. The Bears are the only team with more HOF'ers than the Packers.

Gregg was a typo. He deserves a correction.

It's difficult to assess from your post whether that's a lot or in line with other teams. What's the figure for the Cowboys or Bears? Or how 'bout the 49ers with Rice and Montana.

Coaching is probably the biggest factor in how players in their twilight end their careers. Bud Grant kept his players around because he thought that they deserved it. In Green Bay, they've had so many coaches after the time that Lombardi left. Starr, Devine, Gregg, etc.

Its weird that you mention 2 players who were Eagles (White & Carter) BEFORE spending the twilight of their career with the Packers or Vikings.

ETA- and what is the point of this anyway?

I remember when I was young (20 years ago-ish), where they were talking about how rare it was for a guy to play his whole career with the same team. I think that even though it is common nowadays to see a player play for five or six different teams, I think it was still the norm even way back when, where a guy would play for at least 2 or 3. Even 30+ years ago I think it was somewhat rare for a player to play his whole career with one team.

The point of this post is somewhat directed at Brett Favre. GB fans have basically washed their hands of him and don't want anything to do with him at this point. As soon as they make a bust for him in Canton, he will then become a big thing again for the Packers. I haven't seen any Packer fans say anything positive about the dude for over a year now.

But when I look at all of the Packer HOF'ers, only half of them ended their careers with the team. None of those players have ever had a "don't ever come back here again" attitude that Favre has right now with Packer fans.

I can only speak for myself when I say that I'm washing my hands of him because of the way he's handled things, and the way he's been for a few years now. The guy was a diva and the packers brass hid that for a long time. From being upset at the packers that the Pats came in and took Moss out from under them and saying that they need WR help, to McCarthy being hired instead of an underwhelming Mooch.

He's always tried to stick his nose in matters that he has no say in, and is quick to try and call out those who don't agree with him (Ted Thompson/Mike McCarthy)

He's also doing the unforgivable, and that's going to play with the Vikings, and it's only to try and rub it in the faces of Ted and McCarthy, but he doesn't realize that he's pissing on every packer fan that ever bought a jersey, his book, or rooted for him. His country bumpkin/ aww shucks facade is fake. He is nothing more than Terrell Owens with a better arm and less speed.

With a lot of the names you mentioned, I don't know every circumstance of there departure from the team, but I'm sure they didn't retire, then unretire, then retire, then try and come back after the team moved on... I'm also sure they didn't go on Greta Van whatever's show and try and drag the team through mud. He's acted like a child who had his toy taken away from him and it's disheartening. Favre was my favorite athlete since I was around ten years old so it sucks, but I am one of those that don't want him doing anything with the packers. I'd rather they not retire his number because of his actions, but I do admit that's a little far.

He's not a packer. While I was upset over everything last year, to an extent, it was forgiveable. But what he's doing now, with the Vikings is unforgivable. I pretty much agree with Fran Tarkingtons statements on the radio a few weeks back. He's going to the Vikings only to attempt to stick it to Ted Thompson, Mike McCarthy, the Packers, and Packer fans. Honestly, I'm all for it at this point. I'm sure Vikings fans will be looking to buy some Favre memoribillia stuff, which I'll be selling shortly.

But I can assure you of this, when he does go in to the Hall, I will not be onboard the Favre lovewagon. I hope that other packer fans don't show up wearing there Packers 4 spamshirts.

You've got to remember that Favre held the team hostage with his threats of retirement for years, then retired, then had McCarthy and Thompson charter a plane to his house just for him to decide he wanted to stay retired... At that point the Packers were done and had moved on. Favre then changes his mind again and wants to play. At a certain point the Packers had to move on. He put them in that situation, and then he became butt hurt because of it.

Good post. I have it on extremely good authority that Lombardi never played a down for the Packers.

None of the other players ever put themselves above the team, either. Favre will always be remembered fondly in GB fans' minds - they aren't fickle at all, as your seem to infer. But they aren't tolerant of his recent nonsense, either. You can love your son and still be pissed off at him when he pulls a bone-headed move.

Play or coach what's the difference? He's deservedly in the HOF as a Packer but left the team to coach the Redskins. What difference does it make if he never played a down?

Btw, all of the comments so far have been good ones.

None of them ever pissed on the fans' shoes the way Favre has been trying to.

Off-topic, who do the Vikings have to blow to get Jim Marshall in the freakin' Hall?

Good question. I know a dude that started up a facebook page to get Jim Marshall into the HOF. I heard he's a good guy.

I could be out on a limb here but I don't think the HOF voters are big into Facebook.

I could be wrong though

BTW- Marshall should be in

You're wrong. Facebook can find a million people that hate cancer, hate the Cowboys, or Phillie Fans.
