WashingtonD
A lot of drafts get posted up here, but not many auctions. Here's a recent non-IDP auction for your comparative purposes Notes: - 1000 dollar salary cap - 8 starters (1 QB, 1-2 RB, 2-3 WR, 1 TE, 1 K, 1 D/ST) - Some of the values are likely a bit wonky as we had 4 teams have to drop out before completing the auction, there was a supplemental auction for those 4 teams last night - 12 team league (4 huddlers) - Each team could place 5 rookies on taxi squad, their contract dollars don't count against the salary cap until they are "promoted" off taxi squad Results Below Team 1 Player Salary Term Rivers, Philip SDC QB $130 4 Roethlisberger, Ben PIT QB (P) $30 3 Betts, Ladell WAS RB $5 1 Graham, Earnest TBB RB $2 1 Hightower, Tim ARI RB $40 5 Taylor, Chester MIN RB $2 1 Turner, Michael ATL RB $300 5 Westbrook, Brian PHI RB (Q) $175 2 Colston, Marques NOS WR (P) $125 4 Driver, Donald GBP WR $6 1 Holmes, Santonio PIT WR $78 5 Muhammad, Muhsin CAR WR $2 1 Gates, Antonio SDC TE (Q) $65 3 Miller, Heath PIT TE $4 1 Vinatieri, Adam IND PK (P) $5 1 Cowboys, Dallas DAL Def $2 1 Titans, Tennessee TEN Def $23 3 17 Total Players Total Salary: $994 42 Salary Cap: $1,000 Cap Room Available: $6 Team 2 Player Salary Term Collins, Kerry TEN QB $5 1 Manning, Peyton IND QB $185 2 Pennington, Chad MIA QB $10 1 Brown, Ronnie MIA RB $115 3 Johnson, Larry KCC RB $50 1 Maroney, Laurence NEP RB $25 2 Mendenhall, Rashard PIT RB $25 4 Bess, Davone MIA WR $10 3 Breaston, Steve ARI WR $30 3 Johnson, Calvin DET WR $215 4 Moore, Lance NOS WR (P) $25 2 Schilens, Chaz OAK WR $15 4 Smith, Steve NYG WR $10 3 Casey, James HOU TE ® $2 4 Davis, Vernon SFO TE $10 2 Longwell, Ryan MIN PK $10 2 Eagles, Philadelphia PHI Def $40 1 17 Total Players Total Salary: $782 42 Salary Cap: $1,000 Cap Room Available: $218 Team 3 Player Salary Term Bulger, Marc STL QB $10 2 Delhomme, Jake CAR QB $10 2 Edwards, Trent BUF QB $30 3 Leinart, Matt ARI QB $10 3 Quinn, Brady CLE QB $10 2 Charles, Jamaal KCC RB $6 4 Forte, Matt CHI RB (P) $258 6 Harrison, Jerome CLE RB $10 2 Lewis, Jamal CLE RB (P) $28 1 Lynch, Marshawn BUF RB (O) $95 4 Williams, Ricky MIA RB $2 1 Edwards, Braylon CLE WR (P) $77 5 Johnson, Andre HOU WR $220 5 Meachem, Robert NOS WR (P) $2 1 Ochocinco, Chad CIN WR $99 3 Boss, Kevin NYG TE $2 1 Olsen, Greg CHI TE $80 4 Elam, Jason ATL PK $6 1 Graham, Shayne CIN PK $2 1 Bills, Buffalo BUF Def $2 3 20 Total Players Total Salary: $959 54 Salary Cap: $1,000 Cap Room Available: $41 Taxi Squad Stafford, Matthew DET QB ® $35 6 Brown, Andre NYG RB ® $5 1 Collie, Austin IND WR ® $1 6 Heyward-Bey, Darrius OAK WR ® $15 4 Pettigrew, Brandon DET TE ® $15 6 5 Total Players Team 4 Player Salary Term Cassel, Matt KCC QB $53 4 Garrard, David JAC QB $20 3 Barber, Marion DAL RB $115 3 Jacobs, Brandon NYG RB $145 2 Jones, Greg JAC RB $2 2 Jones, Julius SEA RB $40 2 Jones-Drew, Maurice JAC RB $275 3 Bryant, Antonio TBB WR $35 3 Hester, Devin CHI WR $25 2 Mason, Derrick BAL WR (P) $2 2 Moss, Santana WAS WR $10 4 Walter, Kevin HOU WR $10 2 Welker, Wes NEP WR $75 3 Shockey, Jeremy NOS TE $25 2 Winslow, Kellen TBB TE $31 4 Kaeding, Nate SDC PK $7 3 Vikings, Minnesota MIN Def $20 3 17 Total Players Total Salary: $890 47 Salary Cap: $1,000 Cap Room Available: $110 Team 5 Player Salary Term Hill, Shaun SFO QB $2 2 Rodgers, Aaron GBP QB $165 5 Smith, Alex SFO QB $3 2 Benson, Cedric CIN RB $25 3 Gore, Frank SFO RB $150 4 Grant, Ryan GBP RB $180 4 Morris, Sammy NEP RB $2 1 Burleson, Nate SEA WR (P) $2 1 Chambers, Chris SDC WR $5 3 Cotchery, Jerricho NYJ WR $10 3 Crayton, Patrick DAL WR $2 2 Gonzalez, Anthony IND WR (P) $50 4 Holt, Torry JAC WR $22 2 Jones, James GBP WR $2 2 Scheffler, Tony DEN TE $15 4 Witten, Jason DAL TE $125 4 Gostkowski, Stephen NEP PK $25 3 Nedney, Joe SFO PK $2 1 Dolphins, Miami MIA Def $2 1 Steelers, Pittsburgh PIT Def $40 3 20 Total Players Total Salary: $829 54 Salary Cap: $1,000 Cap Room Available: $171 Taxi Squad Coffee, Glen SFO RB ® $2 2 Moreno, Knowshon DEN RB ® $100 3 Crabtree, Michael SFO WR ® $51 4 3 Total Players Team 6 Player Salary Term Cutler, Jay CHI QB $130 4 Flacco, Joe BAL QB $18 2 Ryan, Matt ATL QB $110 4 Sanchez, Mark NYJ QB ® $50 4 Addai, Joseph IND RB (P) $95 3 Bradshaw, Ahmad NYG RB $5 3 Parker, Willie PIT RB $78 2 Rice, Ray BAL RB $65 3 Washington, Leon NYJ RB $20 2 Avery, Donnie STL WR $33 2 Harvin, Percy MIN WR ® $41 3 Houshmandzadeh, T.J. ts
Notable that Brees went for $282, while Peyton / Brady / Rogers were all in the $150-$185 range. Team #3 seems a bit "Browns-heavy" (Quinn, Harrison, Lewis, Braylon) does this guy know something the rest of us might not ... but the same team also has 5 QBs on the roster, so I am not sure what's up there. Players such as Fargas, Choice, James Jones, Sammy Morris & a couple of others at $2 each seems like decent value. Not sure what team #10 expects to do at QB - Jamarcus, Henne & Freeman? The PK prices were curious as well, ranging anywhere from $25 (Gostkowski) down to $2 (a few guys) with several others going in the $5-$14 range ... a function of cap dollars left over when some teams decided they needed a PK, or more a reflection of what some teams saw as the true value of particular PKs? Interesting stuff regardless. Edited July 3, 2009 by ts
WashingtonD
Team 10 joined the league 6 hours before draft (last minute replacement) and I think a bit of that is how he ended up in the bind he did at QB, he was also one of the teams that had to leave before the end of the first round of auctioning. The PKs that had the highest value were the ones that were "raised" for bidding early in the auction, when people were still flush with dollars. The 2 dollar guys were all at the very end of the draft when there was almost no competition for that position. So I'd say those values are more attributed to cap dollars left over when PKs got raised versus true value. One other thing that might not be obvious is 2 dollars was minimum vet bid, and 1 dollar was minimum rookie bid. So any vet with 2 dollars means no one else bid on that player during the live auction.
satelliteoflovegm
I would add, probably 9 of the 12 were first time auctioners, including me, kinda feeling around in the dark for a while. As for 6 QB's, my bid on Delhomme, was never raised and that was when all teams were still on board. I didn't really want him. The others are all question marks, my hope is one hits big, now or in the next few years. If I'd have won Brees I would have signed just two more QB's, I bid into the low $200's but he went much higher. So I scrambled for quality QB's and failed each time after. As for the Browns...I do see value there and an improvement from 2008 numbers across the board. piratesownninjas
Not sure what team #10 expects to do at QB - Jamarcus, Henne & Freeman? I actually was told I was in 2 1/2 hours before the draft, as someone dropped the day before. I was at work at the time, hung over and running on two hours of sleep as my bachlor party was the night before... With no PPR of any kind and lineup requirements of 1-2 RB and 2-3 WR I decided to go big, landed AP, Jackson, Moss and Quan, but then had to leave for some stupid dinner/engagment party thing. When I got back the available QB starters were JaMarcus Russell, Kerry Collins, and whoever Tampa Bay is trotting out at QB.
satelliteoflovegm
Perhaps on the kicker values, I saw with them and with other positions, owners tried to get people they had on other teams. Being a new format to most they grabbed who they were comfortable with and were willing to pay a premium for that comfort. I saw it all day long from owners Im familiar with. I would also add, Pirates did a great thing filling in, I tried to help him where I could. It should be interesting to track his team over the next several years and see how this SWIIIIIIING for the fences approach works. Intentional or not. I know you were hung over and may not have had a clear strategy, but the one you went with is go with Stars n Scrubs, which I think will work when we only start 8 players. Your top 4 of Adrian Peterson, Steven Jackson, Randy Moss and Anquon Boldin can win all your games for you. Throw in rookie Chris Beanie Wells, and now I really don't want to have to face that starting 5. Since there are no negative points, you'll be fine with a pedestrian QB- and gawd help us if Jarmacus Russell actually emerges. Your problems will arise when bye weeks come up and if some of your stars don't perform. Then you don't have a lot to fall back on. That's one handsome starting 5 lineup. electricrelish
Update - Lando swapped Anquan for Jay Cutler to address his QB issue OK, now his top five starters are really scary. Jay Cutler (QB) Adrian Peterson (RB) Steven Jackson (RB) Chris Wells (RB) Randy Moss (WR)
piratesownninjas
It wasnt so much being hung over as it was running on 1 1/2 hour sleep while sweating the booze out of me. Bachlor party before an auction=Good idea. Early on in my FF days I would go for the stars and scrubs approach and I won some leagues, then I started playing it a bit more safe auction wise and would fill out a team that had insane depth, but I'd still get tapped out in the first or second round of the Playoffs. I've just come full circle on the studs/scrubs approach is a gamble, but a gamble that will win more leagues than will being conservative.
