College Football By The Numbers

I'm not sure if this was posted before. This is an interesting look at the last 5 years:

:wacko:

Boom Statistics! That’s how Michael Scott would introduce this post. To be a little more descriptive the table below is a breakdown of every* 1a school’s record over the last 5 (2004-2008) seasons. I wasn’t able to find a summary of the data like this anywhere so I created it myself.

My, maybe interesting, observations.

* USC is THE elite program in college football. The numbers speak for themselves.

* Boise State is head and shoulders above the WAC, but their 55-9 (38-2) record looks weak when you see they are only 4-5 against the AP Top 25. The same can be said for WVU’s 50-13 (26-8) and 5-7 and Wisconsin’s 47-17 (26-14) and 5-12 records.

* The Georgia Road Warriors

* Boston College is #12 in wins over the last 5 years, yet both coaches went looking for greener pastures.

* Tulsa, Navy and Hawaii all have won more games than Florida State.

* Texas has the National Championship (USC’s only out of conference loss), but Oklahoma runs the Big 12.

* Kansas has an abysmal 32% away winning percentage.

The full table is after the jump.

* W-L: Wins and Losses

* Wc-Lc: Conference Wins and Losses

* Ww-Lw: Wins and Losses against teams with a winning record

* W25-L25: Wins and Losses against AP Top 25 teams

* M(W): Single highest wins

* M(L): Single highest losses

* H%: Home winning percentage

* A%: Away winning percentage

Miami and Nebraska falling off is troubling for me. Notre Dame hasn't been relevant really since 1993. Texas A & M hasn't been relevant since... not sure I would put them on the same level as the other 3, but I do get your point.

the biggest shocker/disappointment whatever you want to call it has to be..................

115 Washington - just ridiculous how far that program has fallen from their 11-1 2001 Rose Bowl Champion season

they will be back under Sarkisian eventually

Not only Rose Bowl Champion season, but out of the best conference that year, and beat Miami. 2000 Hurricanes might have been even better than their 2001 and 2002 squads, and the Huskies handed them defeat. 2000 was another year where the BCS showed how inept it is at making a national champion. Taking nothing away from Oklahoma, who turned in the best defensive performance of my lifetime in completely shutting down the high powered Florida State offense, but Miami or Washington had just as good of a case to be their against the Sooners as Florida State did.

Nebraska had a solid year under first time head coach Bo Pelini last year (9-4). They lost their starting QB, but the rest of the team looks to be pretty good this year (RBs/Def). The shrinking of the available scholarships, along with the coverage of so many other teams have hurt teams with less fertile recruiting grounds (there are probably only a handful of D1 talent players in the state). That and the previous coaching regime had no clue how to lead young men or coach defense. I'm cautiously optimistic about Nebraska going forward. I like the coaching staff's attitude and so far they are saying a lot of the right things. I think NU will win the Big 12 North this year, but it'll take awhile to catch up to the Texas/Oklahoma schools (or for them to fall) in the South.

Speaking of relevant your Iowa Hawkeyes should be in a position this season to compete for the Big 10 if they can play well on the road.

The loss of King and Kroul will be the big question mark on the defensive side, they are pretty solid everywhere else. Offensively, they will go as far as Stanzi takes them. And I knew you would take a jab at their relevancy; all is fair.
