The Draft with it's controlled, structured path that allows you to plan in advance, sometimes trade draft picks and even do it over many days or do you prefer an auction which means it is live and all teams have a shot at all players? Or do you most enjoy mutliple leagues with both formats used? The demise of Fantasy Auctioneer won't help online auctions at all but auctions are always WAY more fun live in person anyway. Big Country Posted July 15, 2009 Share Posted July 15, 2009 I prefer a mix of leagues with both. I have one auction league (CORE). We do it live online with a conference call for the talking. It is a contract/dynasty league. I also enjoy the different set of strategies involved with draft planning, etc. So, for me, as long as I can have multiple leagues, I'll keep a mix. Belushi Posted July 15, 2009 Share Posted July 15, 2009 I'm in 2 dynasty leagues that use auctions for the free agent drafts. My only draft is for a free league with some friends. I really don't enjoy the draft - I have no control over who I get. All the work goes into my cheatsheet beforehand. For the me the auction is much more exciting, especially the bidding wars when you have to decide if that player is worth bidding up another $1 or not to get him. The technology doesn't seem to be there to support a virtual auction with three groups of owners in four locations--and not everyone has a laptop. Truth is, I enjoy the draft leagues I am in too much to give them up. As others have mentioned, it is nice to have a mix. Different circumstances, different methods of planning and loading rosters. Absolutely...and to talk someone into spending more on a player than they want ("Are you gonna let him get away for that price?? He already has ADP!!"). Auctions take thick skins and incredible discipline. +1 to all. I LOOOOOVE auctions. I tend to feel forced into making decisions I might not ordinarily make in a redraft because of a particular slot. Whereas in an auction, I might have plenty of money to get the two players I want, in a redraft I'd have to chose between one or the other, while getting a lesser player at the other end of the snake. I do my money league auctions live, but I was quite impressed to see that ESPN rolled out an online auction applet last year that works exceptionally well taking most of the fantasyauctioneer functionality and adding the usual ESPN glitch. I highly recommend people trying it out an auction, either live or online. Outside of the unrefutable advantage to auctions of allowing you to be engaged on every player, what is really compelling is that it is the "no excuses" format. You know what I'm talking about. In draft leagues, there is always some guy who complains that he really didn't have much control over the team he got due to his position (e.g., "there was a run on top WRs during the 15 picks before mine. Needless to say, I won the player and the league spent the next 10 minutes arguing for/against his time out. I mean, can an astronaut stop the shuttle from launching at T minus 1 because he isn't sure if he turned off the coffee pot? I don't think so! This is the stuff than you can only get from an auction! We do take a break after three rounds of nominations. I'll go over the finances to ensure that we're all on the same page, and the owners get a chance to talk trade, stretch their legs, grab a few brews and some food, etc. But stop an auction right in the middle of bidding?
