Rookies Impressing In Bengals' Camp -- Thu Aug 6 9:25 pm --

After reporting to camp healthy, the Bengals have gotten banged up over the last four days. Eleven players did not practice on Thursday, but no position has had it as bad as tight end. Ben Utecht was released from the hospital and visited doctors in Cincinnati after suffering a concussion Wednesday night. Starter Reggie Kelly was lost for the season earlier in the week. Daniel Coats is out at least a week after spraining his ankle. That means third-round pick Chase Coffman will get even more opportunities to show how much he’s improved. ”It’s definitely not easy. He’s getting the whole thing thrown at him,” quarterback Carson Palmer said. “He improves every day. He’s relentless and doesn’t ask for a break. He doesn’t pull himself out and he plays every single rep. He’s got his hands full and sees ways he can get better.” Palmer also praised sixth-round rookie RB Bernard Scott: ”I like him a lot; I think he’s going to be really good," Palmer said. "He’s going to be a good change of pace with the kind of big bruiser Cedric (Benson) is but Benard has a lot of speed. … He’s been the star so far of all the rookies. He’s made the most plays and dropped the most jaws." (Cincinnati Enquirer)

Coffman slipped into the third round of April's draft because of a broken foot and next to no experience as a blocker, but it's good to see the son of a former NFL TE isn't slacking off. Scott, coming off a stellar two-year run at Abilene Christian, looks to be doing everything in his power to make people forget his checkered past. With only Brian Leonard and Kenny Watson in his way, Scott stands a strong chance of winning the backup RB battle. At this rate, if he stays out of trouble, he could overtake Benson at some point this season.
