Outshined
With Gonzalez out for now, Colts caught in quandary For at least a month, Wayne may be the Colts' only veteran receiver The names haven't changed but the magnitude of the question has regarding who will help Reggie Wayne carry the load at wide receiver for the Indianapolis Colts. It won't be Anthony Gonzalez, at least for the immediate future. The veteran receiver sprained ligaments in his right knee in Sunday's season-opening 14-12 win over Jacksonville. Team president Bill Polian said on his Monday evening radio show on the injury isn't "year-ending. The fact that it's not season-ending is a good thing." Although Polian was unable to offer a timetable for Gonzalez's return, he could be out as long as six weeks. If that's the case, who will help ease the pressure that undoubtedly awaits Wayne, especially on the heels of his 10-catch, 162-yard performance in the opener against the Jaguars? If Gonzalez is out for more than four weeks, Polian said the Colts likely would sign a veteran. Link
CaptainHook
The Indianapolis Colts will sign former Philadelphia Eagles receiver Hank Baskett on Thursday, a league source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The Colts have been in the market for a receiver since losing Anthony Gonzalez to a knee injury. After releasing Marvin Harrison in a cost-cutting move in February, the Colts expected two former first-round picks, receivers Reggie Wayne and Gonzalez to step up. But Gonzalez sprained ligaments in his right knee Sunday and is expected to miss several weeks. The Indianapolis Star, citing a source, reported Thursday that Gonzalez won't require surgery and hopes to return after the Colts' Oct. 18 bye -- meaning he will miss four games. Baskett was one of seven receivers the Eagles carried on their 53-man roster through Week 1. He became expendable after Philadelphia selected Jeremy Maclin in the first round of April's draft and added Brandon Gibson in the sixth round. Baskett had 72 catches for 1,052 yards and six touchdowns in 48 games with the Eagles. from espn.com Edited September 17, 2009 by CaptainHook
CaptainHook
Anthony Gonzalez will not require surgery to repair a sprained ligament in his right knee and could return after the team's bye week in mid-October, according to a source close to the Indianapolis Colts veteran receiver. Gonzalez sprained the posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee late in the first quarter of Sunday's opener against Jacksonville. A person close to Gonzalez said the 2007 first-round draft pick hopes to be back after the Oct. 18 bye, which would mean he would miss four games. Owner Jim Irsay acknowledged experiencing an unpleasant flashback while watching Gonzalez crumble to the Lucas Oil Stadium field. During an Oct. 29 practice last season, cornerback Marlin Jackson went to the ground after tearing two ligaments in his right knee. Neither player was touched. Jackson's injury ended his season. "When Anthony was coming off the field and couldn't put any pressure on (his right leg), I remembered what happened to Marlin," Irsay said. "I'm thankful it wasn't worse." The Chicago Bears were not as fortunate. They lost linebacker Brian Urlacher for the season with a dislocated wrist. The Pittsburgh Steelers avoided the worst-case scenario with safety Troy Polamalu, who is expected to miss at least a month after spraining a ligament in his left knee. "You don't like either of (the injuries)," Irsay said, "but the ones where the guy is done for the whole season are the ones that really hurt." The Colts on Wednesday worked out receivers D.J. Hackett, who played for Carolina last year, and Chad Jackson, who played in Denver. Kevin Robinson, Hackett's agent, said his client would not be signed; Jackson's agent, Ian Greengross, had not heard from the team. ESPN.com reported David Patten, who played for New Orleans the past two seasons, also tried out. Attempts to reach his agent were unsuccessful. from Indianapolis Star Edited September 17, 2009 by CaptainHook
Square
I saw an ESPN article this morning saying that the colts were going to sign Hank Baskett (PHI) to get some more receiver depth. Too bad for Gonzo. I thought he'd have a solid year.
CaptainHook
Baskett is signed and practiced today. The official word on Gonzalez is 2-8 weeks.
NavinRJohnson
So the Colts bye is next week (Week 6). If AGonz returns for Week 7 the Colts have STL,SF, HOU, NE. I've got some room to stash him for a few weeks. Is his injury coming along at all? Wheelchair, seeing eye dog...full body cast....jogging on the side...what? p.s. please don't make this a pierre garcon thread...I understand the risks there. thanks. myhousekey
Reports I've seen from today. He's still not practicing. RotoWire) Gonzalez is making progress in his return from a sprained PCL in his right knee, but the Colts are not giving a timetable for his return. "He's doing everything we expect him to do at this point in time," Jim Caldwell told the Indianapolis Football Report. "Maybe a little bit ahead. The doctors and everyone involved feel good about where he is." Analysis: Gonzalez was expected to miss up to six weeks when he hurt his knee in Week 1, which has led to speculation he could return in Week 7 after Indy's bye. However, don't make any plans to pick him up or activate him until he's back on the practice field. Rotoworld) Anthony Gonzalez (knee) is not expected back for the Colts this week.Analysis: Gonzalez is likely still targeting Week 7 (after the Colts' Week 6 bye) to return to action. Coach Jim Caldwell had no update on Gonzo Wednesday. Edited October 7, 2009 by myhousekey
NavinRJohnson
thanks, key. That helps a lot. After I read your post I went over there and saw that update was dated today 10/7, thanks! The analysis is funny. >>don't make any plans to pick him up or activate him until he's back on the practice field.<< Pick him up and activate him are 2 entirely different things yet they are expertly lumped together in the analysis. electricrelish
I hope he never comes back. Garcon is doing just fine without him.
cdrudge
I hope he never comes back. Garcon is doing just fine without him.I think this is why you definitely won't see him back until at least after the bye. There is no need to rush him back. If Garcon and/or Collie hadn't stepped up, things might be different...but that hasn't been the case.
myhousekey
Not good news. I went ahead and picked up Collie (currently the only WR on my roster who is healthy and not on bye in week 7). Published Tue Oct 13 2:28:00 p.m. CT 2009Rotoworld) Colts president Bill Polian revealed that Anthony Gonzalez (knee) is not healthy enough to practice during the team's Week 6 bye. Analysis: Polian also said CB Kelvin Hayden (hamstring) is "probably closest" to returning among all the Colts' injured players. He was noncommittal when asked if Gonzalez could immediately resume an every-down receiver role in Week 7. "We'll cross that bridge when we come to it," Polian said. "In my experience, there will be some roadblocks before we get to that bridge." Edited October 14, 2009 by myhousekey

Belushi
or Collie... I don't think it really matters for Collie. I understand he plays the slot, and Garcon is the one filling in for Gonzalez.

Shorttynaz
it seemed to matter a whole lot last week.... Don't know if anyone watched the post-game on field interview with Manning and Collie after Sunday night's game. Manning was giving Collie huge props and said that they've been working day in and day out to work on their timing. Collie IMO will still see regular playing time whenever Gonzo comes back. He seems to fit the mold perfectly of what Stokley was when he was there. Edited October 15, 2009 by Shorttynaz
Belushi
it seemed to matter a whole lot last week.... I'm not sure what you're talking about. My point was that Collie would produce whether Gonzo was there or not, since he plays a different position. Are you saying that Collie's value will drop when Gonzo come back? Because I definitely see Garcon taking a hit.

Shorttynaz
Exactly. He will likely produce in the same way Stokley did in that position. Indeed. While I don't think he's gonna put up 1000 yards and 10 TDs, it's not out of the question I suppose. I mean he's getting better and better each game. Maybe it continues. Weeks 1 & 2 (combined): 4-19; 0 TDs But, last 3 weeks... Week 3: 3-47; 0 TD Week 4: 6-65; 1 TD Week 5: 8-97; 2 TD Regardless, it's not bad for a rookie taken in the 4th round!
