More Valuable WR on NYG

I couldn't help coming away from last nights game being very impressed by these WR's. Fortunately I picked up SSmith off the Waiver wire last week. I figured he had the most value since he seems to be locked into one of the receiver spots, while the other spot appeared to be up in the air. Who do you think will have the better season all around? I'm still leaing towards SSmith being more consistent on a week to week basis. That route he ran on the TD was just sick.

Both.

Smith is maybe a little more consistent week in and week out, but MM will be the big play guy.

Smith gets more catches and MM gets more yards.

TD's are hit and miss.

If I had to take one I'd take MM, but I am biased, becuase I love the big play potential and I have been on him since pre-season.

Non PPR MM for sure.

Full PPR edge to Smith closely.

1/2 PPR total toss up IMO.

IMO, Smith is the more desirable WR to have long-term because he is less likely to loose looks if/when Hixon and/or Nicks return to the rotation. But I think in the short term both Smith and Manningham are equally desirable.

Agree on Nicks. Don't agree on Hixon.

The Giants have always really wanted him to be the # 3 or 4 guy and play some special teams.

He is not an every down starting WR.

I do agree on Nicks, but I say he misses at least two more games. As a rookie already being a little behind, that is tough to over come.

And I suppose *you* know something about the Giants? Oh wait...

Watching the game, it seemed to me like Smith is taking over Toomer's role and Manningham is taking over Burress' role. I am not saying in any way that Smith is the next Toomer or Manningham is the next Burress, but that was my impression of their roles in the Giants offense.

I think you got it right - Smith will be more consistent, so I go with him. I think Manningham's snaps get cut into by Hixon and Nicks when they are healthy, while I think Smith keeps the same value going forward as Eli's safety net.

After watching last night, I don't see either of those guys cutting into Manningham's production. To me, Manningham was clearly the best WR, I saw a few drops by Smith and Manningham seems more reliable and explosive. We will see, but my money is on Manningham - plus, he has the QBs name in his last name. That's gotta count for something - right?

I'm a new guy here, but here's my view of the situation. Smith is a solid consistent receiver, but he doesn't have that break away speed. He runs great routes and will catch the ball most of the time. The only "problem" I can see with Smith is that he doesn't seem to get a lot of yards after the catch. He will get some yards and a lot of catches but I don't think he's the best option.

Luckily for me, I picked up Manningham on both of my fantasy leagues this week and it really payed off. I'm a big U of M fan so I've been keeping my eye on him since the beginning of the season. Manningham also runs solid routes (a testament to their coaching staff). The difference is in 3 different areas. First, Manningham has excellent break-away speed if he gets into the open field, he's usually going to score. Second is yards after the catch. There were a few times in the game last night where the defender was on top of him as soon as he caught the ball and he still avoided him. Lastly, is the unbelievable concentration he has. If anyone needs evidence of this, just watch the touchdown catch from last night.

I don't see the giants limiting Manningham's reps if he keeps playing like he has been, which I think he will.

Hixon and Nicks were out last night, so it's very hard to evaluate Manningham until those other guys are back in the mix. He'll probably have a leg up on them when they get back but you never know.

Agree with most of what has been said here. Smith is more consistent and is more of a possession receiver. He is more likely to give you points every single week, but less likely to score TDs. Manningham is the big-play threat, the classic featured/#1 type of WR who can be feast or famine. But in those weeks where he is on, or the matchup is good, he has a higher ceiling than Smith, and I predict he ends the season with more fantasy points. Also I don't see anyone taking playing time from Manningham if he keeps this up. It would not make sense to throttle a hot player who Eli trusts and gives the team a better chance of winning, just to give a rookie more playing time. And Hixon was just a seat-warmer IMO.

Hixon started over Manningham last night and played into the second quarter before getting hurt. Two of Hixon's three pass targets were in the red zone. I'm not sure what that amounts to going forward, but I do think its safe to say Manningham would not have had such a great Week 2, but for Hixon's injury.

I think the Giants wanted any of these guys step up during camp, preseason, and early this season. I doubt Hixon's role was ever set in stone.

bingo - my point was that Manningham's production came when the other guys were out

True (well, Hixon started the game and got hurt) but, with Nicks being a rookie and missing time already, I automatically dismiss his contribution possibilities the remainder of the year. It's gonna take something epic for him to shine through at this point (for this season).

Hixon - this is his 4th season and while he did have Burress and an aging Toomer to deal with in previous years, something tells me that he should have stepped up by now and easily distinguished himself from Manningham and Nicks. He hasn't.

I don't know how to describe it other than Manningham just looks like the real deal. Hixon missed a couple of catches last night (as did Smith) and he just doesn't look like a reliable WR to me. Of course it's very early in the season, but I like what the 2nd year Manningham did last night. He seems determined, focused and quick - I like him to be the main guy come season's end. We will see I guess.

Agreed - Nicks is more the every down kinda guy that I think they wanted to step up. Should be interesting to see how it all shakes out.

That's how players earn starting spots, by making the most of their opportunities. That's two weeks in a row where he's come into a game and came through big.

And let's do the math -- Hixon was waived by Denver and picked up by the Giants because of his special teams abilities. He's basically a seat warmer for the draft picks the Giants expect to be their future at WR. Manningham was a third rounder last year who is considered a first round talent, had he played out his last year of eligibility at Michigan. He's quick and gets separation, they love his work ethic, and Eli trusts him. After a year of not getting much playing time because he was raw and injured, he's now learned the system and is ready to step up to the next level. Next year he could be one of those magical third year WRs we like to talk about.

even after watching the Giants/Skins matchup in week 1, I went out and grabbed Manningham in my local because he just seems to have a burst of explosiveness after the catch...

my only ptoblem was not starting him in week 2 while having Randy Moss, Lance Moore and Ted Ginn Jr. as my WR's...

he could have easily started over either of the WR's not named Moss this week....

at least I still got the win anyways, but Manningham would have made it much easier..

I didn't. I guess Smith's drops just stood out more because they seemed very catchable to me.

Smith caught - then dropped - at least one pass in the 3rd quarter that I groaned at (I needed a few more to secure a win). But after looking at the game's stats, in retrospect it seems pretty forgivable.

Let me say this as honestly as I can.

I would be SHOCKED if Hixon got more passes his way than MM on a game in game out basis.

Doesn't mean he won't line up as the starter, but I can not see him getting more passes than MM.

Even in pre-season MM got a lot of Eli love.

Just saying I don't see it with Hixon.

Nicks maybe, but not Hixon.
