billay
I'm no fan of guns, but based on what I know about the case, 2 years in prison strikes me as an awfully harsh penalty for shooting yourself in the leg. Furd
He was carrying a concealed weapon illegally and he discharged it in a crowded nightclub. In a state with harsh gun laws. I'm thinking that such behavior should be discouraged. Don't do the crime . . .

billay
Apparently he took a plea. Had he gone to trial, he faced the possibility of 15 years, and his attorneys didn't have any reason to think a trial would go well for him. Apparently catching a Superbowl winning TD doesn't get you very far with a NY jury.

cdrudge
I didn't realize that. I thought he shot himself while in the back of a car outside the night club.Regardless if it was in a crowded nightclub or in a cab, he discharged an unlicensed gun within NYC. The original two counts that he faced actually called for a mandatory minimum 3 1/2 years each. His plea reduced that down to just two years. I don't think the prosecution was out to make an example specifically of Plaxico. I think they were out to continue with another example of them enforcing the law fairly for everyone who has an unlicensed gun. Does it suck for Plaxico, sure. Do I think that two years is more then enough punishment? Yes. Are there better ways that Plaxico could serve is time then sitting in a jail cell? Probably. But the fact of the matter is that the law didn't allow for that. If you don't agree with the application of the law, the law should be changed, not just make exceptions to it. I very much agree with this. My opinion remains that this is a terrible law and someone getting 2 years in jail under these circumstances is a crime against us all perpetrated by facist politicians. Thews40
Jeter could shoot the Mayor and he would get community service Too harsh IMO... way too harsh. Does he really pose a threat? How bout some anger managment classes and let him play football while he still can. We're paying for him to sit ...anyone feel safer he's locked up?
