911? Can it get ay worse?

Former Oakland Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon is no longer on good terms with the football team he once led to a Super Bowl.

The Oakland Raiders want to ban Rich Gannon from their facility.

That strained relationship has degenerated into the Raiders demanding that Gannon not attend production meetings at team headquarters and issuing a request to CBS Sports that Gannon not work Sunday's Raiders-Broncos game, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Why are the Raiders so opposed to Gannon's presence?

Well, they say it's because he's been extremely critical of the team over the past few years.

"Rich Gannon is not welcome here," Raiders executive John Herrera told the Chronicle. "We told CBS we did not want him in our building, we did not want him to be part of our production meeting, and that's where it sits. ..

"He's attacked us on a regular basis since becoming a member of the media. After affording him the opportunity to establish a career here, he has since gone on to attack us in a way that's totally unacceptable."

CBS has refused to remove Gannon from this broadcast or a Nov. 30 Chiefs-Raiders game.

"Rich Gannon is an objective and analytical broadcaster and he will be broadcasting the game as assigned by CBS," CBS senior vice president of communications LeslieAnne Wade said.

Meanwhile, league spokesman Greg Aiello stated that under league rules NFL teams can't ban Gannon from production meetings. Cooperation with those meetings with league partners is mandatory under league rules.

"It is not permitted under league policy regarding cooperation with our network partners," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said when asked if the Raiders could ban Gannon from the production meetings.

Herrera stated that Gannon repeatedly said that the Raiders should "blow up the building and start over."

That statement was apparently regarded as offensive by Herrera, who took a shot of his own at Gannon.

"We think in a post 9/11 world, that's not a very proper thing to say," Herrera said. "It's uncalled for. He seems to be a guy who can't get over the fact that he played the worst Super Bowl game in the history of the game and he wants to blame everybody but himself. I guess it's our fault he threw five interceptions."

As noted in the report, the game has been blacked out.

Therefore, local fans won't be able to hear Gannon's words on Sunday.

The Raiders have a serious inferiority complex. All bad teams get criticized by the announcers at some point. Heck even the good ones do. Should the Colts ban Gruden from ever covering the Colts 'casue he was so damn happy about the wildcat shredding their run defense?

I think it's inappropriate for a football team to take a valid opinion on their franchise and compare it to the 9/11 tragedy. Had Gannon suggested they fly a few planes into the building with personnel in it, then they may have a point.

No kidding - the statement Gannon made is a common one but in Oakland there is no reform with Al Davis still in charge.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Al Davis will have to die in order for that team to be respected again. I think they're a bigger joke than the Detriot Lions franchise. At least the Lions are trying to get better and are not trying to blame everyone else for all the short commings.

I dunno. Sure, they have enormous owner and front office issues but they could / should have beaten SD and they are 1-1. Several aspects of their game are in decent shape - can the same be said of Detroit?

Shuddup! He said that the Lions were better than another team. So it is written, so it shall be!

The Raiders are such a sad petty little "organization." Sad to see such a once-proud team turn into the league laughingstock--well..it IS the Raiders so it's not THAT sad. Gannon didn't say anything that wasn't true. The Silver and Black are horrific. I still can't believe they cut Garcia before the season. If Garcia was starting for them, they might have won that SD game. Russell is the worst I've seen since David Carr and Ryan Leaf.

Regardless of his ups and downs as a QB, I can say that Rich Gannon is one of those rare genuinely good guys. I would take his word over anyone in the Raiders organization 100 times out of 100.

+1

The year after he retired, I went with some family members to a church about 100 miles outside of Oakland on Christmas Eve. I looked down the row we were sitting at and Gannon and his family were right there. I had the opportunity to talk with him afterward, and he really is a genuinely great guy.

Very sad to see the Raiders' Organization turn on him, but if they did it to Gruden and Gruden and Gannon were as close as they were, you knew it would happen eventually.
