LSU leads the way. they really probably don't belong in the top 20 ratherless the top 10. They can't run the ball & defense is adequate at best. I have seen all their games and get more depressed as the season goes on. Good thing we played Washington the first game of the season. They get four turnovers in the first half and still only had a two point lead at halftime against Miss St. Missed an EP and a 20 something yd FG. Just real disappointing so far. Les better get this team in shape otherwise when we hit the meat the season it will not be pretty.

and yes for those that do not know I am a Tiger fan.

I've been saying this about Ole Miss since the initial polls came out. Yes, they had a nice year last year and they were the only team to beat Florida and they did beat TT in their bowl game but top 5???... we saw Thursday that that was just not right. I, for one, was not surprised.

Another in a long list of why the polls shouldn't come out until October. Of course TV loves to boast their #9 vs #11 match-up this Saturday so...

Preseason polls need to go away.

Please explain how you think banning pre-season polls helps college football? Do you really believe anything would change if they waited to say week 6?

Not sure about how things works in your area of the country relative to high school football, but down here we have 32 team playoffs for each division. Yet we still have statewide football rankings.

Don't see the harm, myself. It simply adds to the buildup of certain games. You can't tell me these preseason polls don't have some merit.

The Coaches Poll is 1/3rd of the BCS formula for one thing and automatically puts some teams at an unfair advantage over others, before the season starts based on absolutely nothing. How is this hard to follow? You always talk about the golf analogy, and I've always come back with if golf did it like the BCS, then Tiger Woods would start off at E par, and you would go right down the rankings.. +1 +2 +3 etc. What has Ohio State done in 2009 to be ranked as high as they are? Lose a close game to USC? Key word there is lose. They certainly haven't beaten anyone yet. They are ranked that high, simply because they were ranked high to begin with, lost, and didn't drop very far, and other teams ahead of them lost, and they bumped up by default. Meanwhile, you have undefeated teams still ranked outside the top 25. And this bias all starts preseason. It's why USC, Oklahoma, and Ohio State are still ranked in the Top 10 right now. If you're gonna make this poll a major component of your overall BCS picture, then make these guys earn it, by winning. Stop rewarding for "quality losses"

FWIW, and i I know you know this, I don't think Iowa is the best team in the nation right now. There defense I believe has shown they are one of the elite, but the offense is far far far from being anywhere near where you need to be to be an elite squad.

The Colley / Iowa ranking, not to mention the AP/USA Today, are just further cause to eliminate or ignore preseason rankings. Yes, it was a nice win for the Hawkeyes but who really did they beat? A Penn St team that has beaten exactly no one and was only ranked in the top 5 because a bunch of folks got together and decided, with no real evidence, that they belonged there. Penn St has now played one decent team and they got beat.

I agree we don't know how good Penn State is, but Penn State certainly is a better win than Oklahoma, or Ohio State has thus far in the year, and I dare say a better win than what USC has (we'll find out when PSU faces OSU though) . Oklahoma State's best win was vs Georgia. How good is Georgia? Georgia's best win was vs Arizona State. How good is Arizona State? And Iowa just beat Penn State in Happy Valley (last I checked a rather difficult place to play, even when PSU sucks, much less when they are favored by 10). All of those teams, have 1 loss, and still ranked ahead of undefeated Iowa in the Coaches poll. Lets not forget as well, Iowa got punished after a narrow win over Northern Iowa. They were ranked, and then dropped out. Who knows how high they would be ranked if they didn't get punished for winning. Again, do I think Iowa is #1 like that particular computer poll suggests? Absolutely not. Ask me in November, about that. But while your question is valid, at this point in the season, there are very few teams that have a better resume than Iowa. This can all change as we head into October, because now other teams can have their showcase games. But as of 9-30-09, you'd be hard pressed to find any factual reason to say that any of those 1 loss teams I mentioned deserve to be ranked higher. You can come up with a LOT of reasons that have nothing to do with what happens on the field, but nothing that has happened on the field so far.

I agree with almost everything you say... except UGA's best win was probably over S. Carolina
