Three games into the season, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are making a change at quarterback, as Josh Johnson was named the team’s starter on Monday over veteran Byron Leftwich.

Bucs coach Raheem Morris announced the change at his weekly Monday press conference, noting his 0-3 team is under a constant state of evaluation. He said the decision was made today after meeting with his staff, and didn’t deny that the youth of the Bucs was a factor in the decision.

“I think the secret is out of the bag. This a young team,” Morris said. “We’re in constant evaluation of our guys. We have to look at all our young players and see what they’re going to be, what they have the opportunity to be. It certainly won’t be the only change, but it certainly will be one of the biggest.”

Morris also said that rookie Josh Freeman will be the team’s No. 2 quarterback, with Leftwich now third on the depth chart.

For now, the 23-year-old Johnson, a fifth-round pick last year out of San Diego State, will be at the helm after seeing the first extended playing time of his career in Sunday’s 24-0 loss to the Giants.

“Josh Johnson has an opportunity, a great one,” said Morris. “He’s got an opportunity, he’s earned it.”
