Medal of Honor
Is Eddie Royal a bust this year and worth dropping? I have him in one league where he is my WR #4. Unfortunately both my 1 and 2 (Colston and Jackson) are on byes this week, so I'm starting him. Are you guys dropping him? And if so, what types of Free Agents have you been picking up? myhousekey
I've seen him dropped in a few of my leagues and he's still sitting on the WW in those leagues. I own him in one league and am probably going to have to start him as my flex this week due to bye week issues and not much being available on the WW. Unfortunately, I haven't seen anything that tells me he's going to get more than 2-20 this weekend. The only hope would be that the Pats jump out to a lead and force Denver to play catch-up thru the air. I heard he's been running a lot of clear out routes to try and open things up underneath. Not what you want to hear about your WR. Edited October 7, 2009 by myhousekey

myhousekey
Was looking thru Denver's passing target statistics for the last 8 years. Main theme I saw is that Eddie Royals' (and all Bronco WR's) targets are down about 30% from 2008. RB's targets are up about 30% but overall there are just less total passes being thrown (down 25% from last year). The 2nd problem is he's completing just over 36% of his passes. That's half of his completion % from 2008 and a flat out awful completion rate for an NFL WR. Hopefully Denver will throw a little more as the schedule becomes tougher, and Orton and the WR's become more comfortable with the offense. However, if Royal can't fix the completion % portion of the problem, it won't matter how many passes the Broncos throw. One other thing I did notice is that this years #'s are not that far off from Denver's historical average since 2002. Last years target #'s were by far the highest of any of the 8 years. Maybe we've set our expectations too high now that Cutler is gone? Edited October 8, 2009 by myhousekey

Maybe we've set our expectations too high now that Cutler is gone? that's the Cutler to Orton effect here... in Chicago - Forte catches the ball a lot less and the wideouts have more fantasy value in Denver - Marshall and Royal are making less plays, but Orton (who has been known to throw to the checkdown option) throws to the RB's more as he prefers the short passing game... Orton probably belongs in a WCO system, but instead he's in an explosive system and uses the short passing game due to preference... in result, we're seeing a mismatch of styles which have complicates fantasy situations
michaelman
i thought Royal specializes in short routes underneath as well

myhousekey
Glad he had a decent day but this news blurb wasn't too encouraging for future games. Rotoworld) According to Broncos coach Josh McDaniels, Eddie Royal's 10-catch performance Sunday was dictated by the Patriots' coverage. Analysis: "That is kind of the way this offense goes," McDaniels said. "We don't force it to anybody and they told us to throw it to Eddie Royal." While it was a nice jumpstart for Royal, more inconsistency awaits.
Pitbull739
I picked him up on the waiver wire, dropped Massoquoi. Hope it works out. If the Browns continue to only complete 2 passes, I think it will be the right move!
