Minnesota Vikings

I at first thought that being 5-0 but playing pretty much cupcakes (except for my Packers) meant that they really weren't worth the 5-0 status. However, after today's game, I have to reassess my position and I now believe that they actually are pretty good. Clearly the class of the NFC North at this point in time. They have passed my first test which was to beat the Ravens. Now, the Steelers and Packers are next and if they can beat them then it will solidify it for me.

However, for the record, I still hate the Vikings and I do hope they get thumped in the next two games. In fact, I hope they get thumped in EVERY game for the rest of the season.

Yes, they are for real.....but not that real. They are a good team but they have been extremely lucky twice against two decent teams at home. They could and should be 4-2.

Sometimes the ball bounces your way and sometimes the other way. I believe it balances out by the end of the season so the only way you can measure is by Wins & Loses ,, that makes the Vikes 6 -0 not 4- 2

Sure but Favre will start declining in a few weeks like he's done the last 4 years. When he retired (one of those times) he said he didn't put in the work needed to play a whole season, but it may not matter.

Today the defense showed weaknesses and they were lucky at the end. In the NFC North I like the Bears to overtake them later in the year.

They are on of the top 3-4 teams though.

In the fourth quarter, that looked like anything but a "solid" defense.

The Vikings lost Pro Bowl cornerback Antoine Winfield and nickel back Benny Sapp in the second quarter of today's game against the Baltimore Ravens at the Metrodome.

Winfield suffered what appeared to be a turf toe injury early in the second quarter, according to KFAN sideline reporter Greg Coleman. Winfield left the sideline on a cart after being examined and was replaced by Karl Paymah at the left corner spot. Winfield returned to the Vikings sideline late in the quarter but has not been back on the field.

Sapp, meanwhile, suffered what appeared to a be a shoulder stinger and possible concussion, according to Coleman. That left the Vikings very thin in the defensive backfield -- rookie corner Asher Allen is not active today -- and forced Minnesota to use backup safety Husain Abdullah in the nickel package late in the first half.

The Vikings also stayed in their base defense more than usual and had linebacker Chad Greenway on the slot receiver at times. It's uncertain if Winfield or Sapp will be able to return. There have been no updates given on either player so far.

Paymah got burned multiple times.

So if we bring injuries into play then the Vikings actually lost to the niners and the Packers.

Huh?

Gil mentioned the Vikings defense was soft and that was a big reason. Flacco did an awesome job against the blitz and also making some big throws.

Playing at home, they gave up 450+ yards, sacked a QB 3 times, and had no take aways? Did someone say they were one of the top 3 or 4 teams in the league?

A missed field goal at the end today, a last minute win against SF before?

If anyone thinks they are a Top 5 team, you are insane.

Now, can they win the division? Yes. Will they? Probably.

I can agree. They need to fix the defensive problems.

Yes, many things to fix on the defensive side of the ball still. The thing is, look at this offense. They have put a minimum of 27 points (IIRC) every week. And this is without the old man in the QB position at camp to get timing down with his WRs. That's pretty impressive, even if the opponents have not been.

As a Ravens fan...

Are the Vikings for real? YES the Vikings are for real. Childress aside, they are very much for real.

I would love to see them pitted against either the Giants or the Saints; what an NFC Championship Game that would be!

Great game today, Vikes!

I'd rather face the Giants...even with the bad history against them. Brees is deadly.

MIN in the dome against the Giants? I'd take the Vikes all day...as long as Childress wasn't my coach. You guys have a really good team, but man that guy is a stumble bum.

They have holes just like every other team in the history of the NFL, but hey are good enough to get the job done. One aspect of their game always seems to make up for the short comings of another part of their game. They keep finding ways to win (or maybe more accurately they keep finding ways to not lose). Worse teams have gone on to win the Championship. I'm ready to believe that they can go all the way!

The Vikes are good; Childress aside I would not be shocked if they won it all.

As a disclaimer, I am a Ravens fan and somehow Billick managed to win it all

First off, we should have lost that game, kickers get paid to make a 44 yarder, Hauschka choked. That's what gets me though, you talk to any players on championship teams and they all say the same thing about their season, "a lot of it was staying healthy and luck." It just always seemed that it was the Vikings on the short end of the stick.... Nate Poole, "Automatic" Anderson, week 10 in 2000..Free in OT.. the horror, and I could go on and on. This Vikings team has a different feel to it then all the teams that broke the faithfull's hearts week after week.

The scary thing is I can easily see this team getting better. The O-line is meh at best, they're looking solid in the pass but abhorent in the run. Part of that is Phil being so new at LT and Sullivan being a first year starter. Loadholt is a massive man that will cement that line for years to come but I wonder about Sulli. He has the head to play center but he is getting OWNED physically by a lot of NTs, especially in the run. They go from brilliant to garbage in a play and sooner or later that's going to cause turnovers that will loose us a game if it doesn't get fixed.

Brett and the recievers still look lost on some plays, but that's improving every week as well. It's to be expected with how late The Silver Fox joined the team and the fact that Berrian was out until week 1. I'm confident that the meltdown will not happen. I think you have to look at the role Brett had to play on different teams, and the condition of Brett and the teams around him. Could the same situation end up existing on this team that could lead Brett down the collapse road? Of course. However, to make a generalization of that nature with the Vikings being a different team, a different coach, and still very healthy(knock on wood) is ignorant. Every year, every team has it's own intricate dynamics that are as unique as a fingerprint. To dismiss that is a mistake and clouds you from seeing a team for what it is.

Say what you want about chilly but he's making a great game plan that highlights his players advantages and limits their weaknesses. They're still learning a lot of things, so why throw the entire play book at them week 1? Secret Squirrel making the right steps, and I'm seeing new wrinkles being added to the offense from week to week.

This team has got to finish! Yeah, the amazing comebacks in the final seconds of the game against two top defenses is impressive but the Vikes gave up large leads late in games to put them in that position. At the start of the season I thought this D would be lights out with a lead, but they're far from it. They just have got to get off the field on third down in the fourth quarter and so far we're not seeing that consistently.

Hope is there though. It's been absent from this team and it's fans for far too long once week one starts.
