rai
lets give wesley a break shall we? even pro bowlers with 2 super bowl rings make mistakes One jerk makes the same gutless play so you want us to give the next jerk a break? I think he should be DQ-ed for longer. Whatever suspension he gets is not long enough IMO Edited October 20, 2009 by rai

WaterMan
In Polamalu's defense compared to Wesley, that guy was way closer to catching the ball. The guy Wesley hit wasn't even close to catching the ball. Edited October 20, 2009 by WaterMan

I take that back, Troy is not a gutless jerk but the play was and you can't cut some slack for the play just because another player has done it in the past. In football it's possible to injure a person and you could break a guys neck or whatever and that stuff can happen, but especially on a play like this where it's not even close to being legal then I don't think there is one person in the country that can support this kind of cheap shot. WaterMan
What I really didn't like about Wesley was how angry he acted. He didn't even go to check on the guy he laid out. After the hit he was stomping through the Panthers' bench like he was the one who was hit. I really question why he acted the way he did after the hit. There was no ball around and he lifted of the ground and speared him. He had all intent of hurting the player! He actually could be charge with assault on this if it comes out that there was some sort of vendetta.

When you spear a player, it is with absolute intent to put the hurt on. And going by a mental clock?? I think not. In high school and College there is the halo rule and all through my years of playing football, I was taught to attack when the receiver catches the ball. That 15 yard penalty is a KILLER when trying to get good field position for your offense.

It was an ill-timed, illegal, possibly cheap shot. But it was not spearing.
BearBroncos
Let me clarify.... I consider it AS bad as spearing. The play PISSED me off and it was dirty, dirty so I see no difference from what he did to spearing.

The play PISSED me off and it was dirty, dirty so I see no difference from what he did to spearing. OK, I see that. But just to play devil's advocate - you don't think there was any possibility that the play was just ill-timed? It's not even possible that he saw something in the receiver's eyes or body language that told him he was about to catch the ball? Gunners don't look back for the ball, they'd get killed by blockers if they did. They look for clues on the receiver as to the timing of the ball and take their best guess. You're 100% confident that this was done with the intent to injure, knowing full well that he would be penalized and possibly fined? Really? Some clamored that the hit on Tom Brady was intent, I wasn't one of them but this in my humble opinion had intent written all over it. I'll never know for sure but these are professional players and know that a player in a receiving position is extremely exposed. Even if he did catch the ball before he had arrived, launching is an action that players know will get them into trouble nine times out of ten. I agree leaving his feet at the last second looks bad, even if the ball was there. But like you said, these guys are pros, would he really risk hurting his team, and getting a fine by KNOWINGLY creaming a guy that early? Why not just wait till the play's over and rip the guy's helmet off and jack him in the grill if you are willing to take the penalty? I can't tell whether or not there was intent to injure or just an ill-timed hit, I just think if that's what he intended to do, he would have to be the stupidest guy on the face of the planet. ETA-and BTW, I enjoyed having a reasonable, civil discussion about it. Edited October 20, 2009 by STL Fan
