kpholmes
We've all mentioned in one thread or another how we feel about what's going on with protecting the quarterback. After Carson Palmer, the NFL has gone out of their way to protect the QB. Tom Brady has created a league of his own as far as protection is concerned... Chris Hope and Tony Brown were the latest fined this week for their hits on him. Quarterbacks like Terry Bradshaw never had any protection within the rules and took some pretty hard shots... which is apparent when listening to him talk... Yes, the quarterback is one of the more vulnerable players on the field, but with the way things are going now eventually players won't ever be able to touch the QB. So what's the answer here? Discuss.

He was that way before the hits too.
Outshined
I am not sure what what the average size of defensive lineman were back in the 70's, but I don't think they were 300 lbs and can run a 4.8 40. grobert81
You gotta face facts. No one really cares if people besides the mannings, brady, or AP get injured. Running back #33 in the game, WR #435, they can all get injured and the team rolls on without them. Maybe they win some and maybe they dont until the guys get back nice and healthy. But the issue here isn't in the interest of the team. It isn't in the interest of the sport. And it isn't in the interest of the players at all actually. The issue is that guys like Brady make football as a business a ton of money. Until people start caring more about the game of football and less about the individual players this will not change. Michael Jordan brought in more money during his years at the top of the game for basketball in the 90s then all of the 30 years before it combined. It took it to new levels of popularity and brought in advertising like no other. Sure it was popular before, but not like that, not even close. Yes, the superbowl is the KING of expensive advertising. But football organizations, agents, and owners have no interest in letting that one game be the highlight of their financial year. They want EVERY SINGLE COMMERCIAL BREAK to be huge. They want to be able to charge as much for this year's first superbowl commercial break in every timeout all season long. The only way to do that is to keep the people who bring in the fans playing and healthy. Do you really want to watch the Patriots without Brady passing? Probably because you play FF. But if you're a fan of the game in general, and not a fanatic, like the majority of the populace then you want to see the big stars play. I just dont see this rule getting toned down. In fact I think it will get worse. I think you'll see more and more fines and rules getting harsher as players with big names get injured. Professional football exists to make money. And like any corporation they will protect heir product. It doesn't bother me at all actually. Yah i think it's lame when Brady is able to get up, turn around, point to an official and then the guy takes out a yellow flag and throws it down. THAT bothers me. But, aside from those rare instances, the stopping of players from bashing the money makers is ok by me because I enjoy watching those guys play more then the team. Call me a bears fan. I still want to see Cutler at the helm every week even if it means a few BS calls by the officials.
xmradioguy
I agree with Rodney Harrison when he said Tom Brady should take his skirt off and put on some slacks. Tom, quit turning around and giving the refs the old evil eye just because someone was pushed into you. Then again, I guess if the officials are giving you the calls, why not do the stare down. After all, if lineman have to tip toe around you, maybe you could throw 6 touchdowns. Edited October 24, 2009 by xmradioguy
