head-to-head scheduling in a 12-team league

i am the commissioner of a 12-team local redraft league in its second year. last year, we had 10 teams -- two divisions, everyone played the other teams in their division twice and played each team in the other division once. perfect. with 12 teams, the same 13-week schedule wasn't as cut and dry. currently we have two divisions, everyone plays their division rivals twice and then three teams from the other division, picked randomly by MFL. this means you don't play every other team. furthermore, because of scheduling quirks, the best teams in one division may never have to face the best teams in the other division. i know one solution would be to have double-headers in non-bye weeks. i would prefer that everyone in the league plays everyone else at least once, so i'm wondering what other solutions other folks might have. (we could bump it up to 14, but i tried that this year and it was too difficult to find two more reliable owners.)

Break it in to 3 divisions of 4 and have 1 week as a double header. That allows you to play the division twice and everybody out of the division once in 13 weeks and have a week 16 superbowl

We do 3 divisions, you play everyone in your division in weeks 1-3 and 11-13 (non bye weeks). You then play everyone else except for one team during the bye weeks.

For scheduling we just use the scheduling tool at our website (used to be CBS, now its MFL) for a 14 week season. I then manually edit the scheduling to match the above for a 13 week season. Your "missed team" is whomever you were scheduled to play in week 11 (move week 14 to week 11).

We have toyed with the idea of a doubleheader for one week, but have never done it.

that's exactly what we did. split the double header games between weeks 1-3 & 11-13. bye weeks for top two seeds in round one of playoffs.

We do everything the same as this, seems to work out. It changes things a bit at the end if there is a tiebreaker and you are tied with a team that you did not play H2H, but we just default to the next tiebreaker of total points.

I am in two 12 team leagues. One has 4 divisions of 3 teams. You play your division twice and the other nine teams once for a thirteen week regular season. Four division winners and two wild cards make the playoffs.

The other league has two 6 team divisions. You play every team once and 2 teams from your division an extra game. This is based on the standings from the previous year. The top three teams in a division play each other twice. The bottom three do the same. Again it is a 13 week schedule. Six teams make the playoffs- top two from each division and two wild cards.

Doubleheaders every week for a 13 week season (26 games total). 1 "superconference" for lack of a better term. Each team plays everyone 3 times except each team plays a few other teams just twice to arrive at the schedule. Schedule is randomly generated.

Record, then total points establish playoff teams. Playoffs weeks 14-16.

League 1: One division of 12. You play every team once and then one team a 2nd time (random luck of how the schedule falls out prior to the draft). Playoffs weeks 13-16 (multi-league playoffs)

League 2: One division of 12. You play every team once and then two teams twice (random luck of schedule each year). Playoffs weeks 14-16.

The problem is the 13 week regular season schedule. Mathematically, it can't be balanced without retarded "doubleheaders" that many fantasy sites can't support or track. I guess you allow 6 teams into your playoffs with the #1 & 2 seeds getting byes in week 14. We considered that format and rejected it because 6 teams are dropped out after only 13 weeks of playing and thereafter only 4 teams are active in week 14 (due to round 1 byes), week 15 and week 16. We do ours differently. We found a way to keep more teams active for a longer period of time yet still only allow the best 4 teams to vie for the bigger prize money. It works this way:

It is a 12 team league with three 4-team divisions. You play your division rivals twice (6 games) and every other team once (8 games). Thus you have a perfectly balanced schedule. Playoffs are held in weeks 15 & 16. Just two weeks of playoffs but 8 out of the 12 teams participate in the playoffs. The top 4 teams play exclusively in one bracket for the big money ("Championship Bracket") and the next 4 teams play in a separate bracket for a consolation prize, usually equal to the league entry fee ("Consolation Bracket").

In the "Championship Bracket", the 3 division winners plus the non division winner with the best record play each other in weeks 15 & 16. We have cash prizes for 1st thru 4th place from that bracket. In the "consolation bracket", the next 4 teams with the best finishing records (who are not in the Championship bracket) play each other in week 15 and the two winners from week 15 go on to play each other in week 16. The lone winner of that bracket gets a smaller prize (he wins his entry fee back). By doing it this way, we have a balanced schedule for 14 weeks, in which every team participates. And then 8 teams get to participate in the week 15, the first of our 2 week playoffs, and then 6 teams participate in week 16. Yet only the best teams get to play for the big prize money while the 4 middle-of-the road teams still play for a prize, keeping them active and interested deep into the season. It's fun this way and it keeps 12 teams active and interested for 14 weeks and then 8 teams active for Week 15 and finally 6 teams active for week 16. And only the better teams get to compete for the big prizes. Perfect. We love this format.
