How did you come to be a fan of...?

Just curious here, no judgements.

There aren't that many of us that frequent this forum and it seems as if the vast majority are fans of a "major" program.

I was wondering...

How many us are fans of said schools because we are actually alumni?

How many went to a school that didn't have football so you're a fan of a local team?

Who grew up a fan of school X(big time football) but then attended school Y(not big time)?

Just the local team?

I think you get the point.

I'll start...

I moved a lot when I was a kid, military, and got interested in football while we were living in Oklahoma thus became a Sooner fan. Later(much) on I attended and graduated from South Florida and continued to be a hugh Sooner fan because the Bulls, quite frankly, were nationally irrelevant(I know, I know, they still are). Fan of both but an OU fan in the grand scheme. As USF has gained prominence and found a place in the national conversation my love for the Sooners has waned considerably. I still pull for the Sooners, in all sports, but my clear #1 is now USF. Go Bulls!

Not nearly as big a fan of the college game as I am for the NFL, but still a big fan... I've been a fan of Michigan because of Desmond Howard, and later Charles Woodson.

I've since married into a family of UT grads, and since I have no real loyalty to a team, I've found myself rooting for them. Heck, my soon to be first born son is going to be named Colt.

I also like to see TCU do well, as Ft Worth is a short drive down the highway, and I like rooting for smaller schools to screw everything up in the BCS.

I grew up about 45 minutes from Seattle. My uncle had season tickets to UDub and used to take me and my Dad to almost every game from the time I was 5 until I was about 9 (Sonny Sixkiller era). I continue to bleed purple ever since and had season tickets throughout most of the Don James era and their National Champioship season, which to this day I think was one of the best college teams of all time. Their defense was unbelieveable that year as I believe they gave up an average of less than 9 points per game. I was part of the great run during the early 90's when they won 4 Pac-10 Titles during the first 5 years of the decade.

Many favorites along the way .... Warren Moon, Mark Brunell, Billy Joe Hobert, Corey Dillon, Napolean Kaufman, Greg Lewis, Joe Steele, Mario Bailey, Michael Jackson and who will ever forget the incredible Steve Emtmann who I believe is still the highest defensive vote getter for the heisman when he finished 4th and won the outland and lombardi trophy the same year.. I've seen some very, very good times and I've seen some recent seasons that I would like to forget. It looks like more more good times are on their way to Montlake.

Born and raised in Seattle, my ENTIRE family are Huskies - not a single WSU grad or fan in the bunch. Although I did have quite a few buddies who ended up playing for Wazzu, so I wanted them to do well.

Grew up a diehard Husky fan, ended up going to University of Arizona, and that is it.

I have had a ton of players I love and teams I have liked over the years- but I will never understand peeps who are diehard fans of teams in other parts of the country with no ties whatsoever - I just don't get it.

As a kid, I was a huge fan of college ball in general. I remember when I was like 8 or so, making floats out of legos with the team logos on them on Jan 1. Because my uncle was a prof at UW and they came out of nowhere to make the Rose Bowl in among the first years I was old enough to care (Spider Lockhart, Warren Moon, et al.) and then beat the highly favored Wolverines, I became a pretty big fan of theirs (even though I lived in Cali). I stayed that way for a number of years, I remember buying a custom UW jersey, replete with a rose on the shoulder with my Pop Warner # on it.

I actually went to Cal, but never got into them as a team (mind you, I wasn't at Cal for long).

For a while, I wasn't really following football much and the college game even less. When I got back into it, the only friends I had who were into it (most of my buddies were just into the NFL) happened to both be Tenn alumni and we always went to a sports bar to find the the UT game. So I sort of adopted them. When I moved to NC, I actually made the trip to Knoxville a few times to catch a game.

Lastly, when I moved here, I realized I had to pick a side when it came to hoops and never liked Duke, so I went with UNC (and btw, that was coming off their worst year in decades), so I tend to pull for them in general. Even though both Duke and UNC fans tend to start wondering when hoops is around mid season.

In general, I'm just a fan of the game. I've got teams that I tend to pull for and teams I just respect, and of course, teams I just don't like at all. But I don't bleed any one color or another.

LSU grad here. However my loyalties to the Tigers goes way further back than that.

I've been a fan of LSU football since I was a kid. I would say I'm the perfect stereotype Southern football fan who gives meaning to the saying football is religion down South. I can't honestly remember a single LSU game since I was a kid that I didn't either attend, watch on TV or listened to on the radio. Sorry to say I can't say the same about attending Sunday services.

Wasn't a huge college football fan growing up, but certainly remember games... Miami, Boston College (Flutie), Michigan, USC, UCLA, Nebraska... I remember watching the big programs and started getting into the NFL too.

When I went to college, we had just lost our football program 2 years prior, so I figured I'd just root for the UCLA Bruins, seeing that I was in the UC program, UCLA was close to my Orange County home, and they were fun to watch (and I was friends with a guy who was good buddies with Skip Hicks). But I was also finding myself rooting for Texas (Priest Holmes) in 1994 and then after I graduated in 1996, a buddy of mine and I drove cross-country and made a stop in Austin. I bought one of the last t-shirts available with the old Southwestern Conference on it.

In the late 90's, I was heavily considering going to UT for grad school, and continued to root for the Longhorns. Haven't stopped rooting for them despite ending up not going to school in Austin. But did move here to Austin 3 years ago and it's been an awesome experience. I've gone to three games now, and usually go down to tailgate with some alums even if I don't go to the game. Going to the UT-A&M game on Thanksgiving this year too.

Grew up in New England and other than Doug Flutie's miracle season, college ball is pretty much ignored in the northeast.... perhaps because the teams all s*ck. Went to a military academy for undergrad.... we had a football team but it was glorified high school ball. A lot of my family (mother and father's sides) were originally from Alabama so I knew all about Bear Bryant. I ended up moving to B'ham in my twenties for a job with Bell South, but decided to do grad school full time instead in Tuscaloosa and the rest as they say is history.

I graduated from Southeast Missouri State Indians, now PC "Redhawks". Though I do still root for them, tough to get much out of that program from a fans perspective, even though we did dropped 3 points on Cincinnati earlier this season (76-3 final).

I grew up in STL so most of my sports teams are tied to STL (Baseball Cards, Football Cards, Blues) I have stayed loyal to these teams, but have moved 9 times in the last 22 years and find myself pulling for the local team.

Moved to Texas in the early 90's and that is where I became a Longhorn fan, no family ties to the school, just started rooting for the local team as I was selling athletic apparel and listening to local sports talk. From Texas I moved to Lake Charles, LA so I got my first real taste of LSU and still had good coverage of TX. I was the Texas kid to most of my co-workers (funny as I grew up in the Midwest), which I think made me pull for them even more. I then moved back to TX and met my wife, she is from New Orleans and all of her family is LSU fans, so I have ties there that pushed me toward rooting for LSU for the last 12 years, I also lived in New Orleans as my current company's headquarters were there, then post Katrina we relocated to my current hometown of Nashville. I pull for LSU in the SEC, but when/if they ever play the Horns as in the CWS, I pull for the horns.

I went to and played for a D3 college football team. Considering they arent televised, I generally root for the only D1 football program in the state I grew up on so ON WISCONSIN!

But I alos love watching service academy games when they are on (Army, Navy, etc.) not only are the offenses fun to watch, so see the men who play not because they were recuited to play ball, but re attending their school and then protect America always makes me root for them.

After reading some of these I realize now that I didn't give my whole story. In addition to the info in the intitial post I was on the Army football team, albeit briefly due to injury and eventual transfer, and ended up at UCF where I had a minor stint that ended with the same injury so on most weekends I am also a Black Knights and Golden Knights fan.

For the time being I'm a bit of a Bama fan because one of my former players is a significant part of that team.

I was born at the UW medical center, into a family of Husky fans and alum. I had season tickets from the time I was 2 until I went to college (wasn't recruited by UW for baseball, so I went to a smaller school). One of my best friends became a 2.5 year starter for the UW football team, which only deepened my interest. After college I worked as a volunteer scout for Neuheisel. I don't recall ever missing a game, and listen on the radio when there is no tv broadcast. Basically a lifer, and really had no choice in the matter. I was literally not allowed to be a WSU fan. I also was taught at a young age to HATE Notre Dame.

I grew up in Huntington WV. as a kid and my father IS a huge Buckeye fan. We went to countless games through my childhood and moved to Columbus my 8th grade year. I can't remember missing a game since. I have countless games on VHS. I would say Keith Byars and Chris Spielman are my favorite Buckeyes from my early days and Eddie George and Joe Germaine from the post 80's.
