Rovers
I read somewhere that Northcutt got benched and Pettigrew was playing the slot... which lead to a nice bump in his numbers last week, apparently. Any Detroit homers know if Pettigrew will play the slot again this week? In some leagues, TE scoring is enhanced, so players listed as TE that get moved around often hold good value, like Dallas Clark. Will Pettirgew continue to be more involved in the offense? Savage Beatings
The Vikings can't stop TE's in general so this would be a good week to start him regardless.
darin3
I heard it was their other TE, Casey Fitzsimmons, that was running in the slot, not Pettigrew. Maybe my information is incorrect.
bushwacked
(KFFL) John Niyo, of The Detroit News, reports Detroit Lions WR Derrick Williams and TE Casey FitzSimmons were used for slot-receiving duties in Week 9 after the team benched WR Dennis Northcutt. Williams had no catches and FitzSimmons had six for 42 yards.
Rovers
I guess I got my Fitzsimmons mixed up with my Pettigrews.

This is correct. Fitzsimmons lined up all over the place like he was some kind of featured player. They tried to run bubble screens for him, quick hitches, slants, etc. It was quite bizarre, even for the Lions.

That should have been the thread starter. So... will Detroit use him this way again this week?
Seahawks21
I would sure hope not! That guy runs a 5-flat and is very unathletic. Any comparisons to Dallas Clark are pipe dreams. Pettigrew is clearly more talented. That said, they don't have many other options and seemed pretty intent on involving him. I don't see why they would change that overnight. Whoa... that wasn't any comparison to Clark, just a reference to a TE playing the slot who could be a sleeper this week who could get 8 targets if he continues to get snaps as a slot receiver. Oh, that wasn't what I was trying to imply. I more meant that the Lions are nuts if they think they have a Dallas Clark type player with this guy. I more meant that the Lions are nuts if they think they have a Dallas Clark type player with this guy. This is something of a disguised WDIS... I'm in a TE heavy scoring legue, and I picked up FitzSimmons, thinking he might be a better start vs. K Smith as a flex, but I think it is still worthy of being in this forum since any time a TE playing slot is worthy of a discussion IF he is used the same way again this week. Why was Northcutt benched? I know he's long in the tooth, but he's a veteran. I have no idea what the heck Detroit is doing here.

Our first place WCOFF team just picked up Fitzsimmons for 1$ in blind bidding as an emergency backup TE behind Gates. Damn. I guess we should have compared him to Dallas Clark after consulting you first.
policyvote
Actually, Linehan's been doing this a little bit, all season long. He'll use the 2-TE set, then either flex Fitzsimmons out wide, slide Megatron into the slot, or both. Its creates all kinds of weirdo matchups. Fitz played 8-man ball in Montana in HS, and played college ball at NAIA Caroll College. He was an undrafted free agent, and has been a fan favorite for six years. He's not a physical mismatch--not a 275-pound, 4.6 guy. He'll never be a 60-catch, 10 TD weapon or anything, either. Obviously, the Lions don't view him as a starter--they drafted Pettigrew in the first round, and use ex-Seahawk Will Heller extensively--but he's a really versatile all-around football player. Using him as a flex option like this can be really effective--and the Lions obviously thought they had some sort of advantage over Seattle there, to go to that well so often.
