Gators DE Carlos Dunlap to miss SEC Championship after DUI arrest

In the biggest week of the year, the Florida Gators must deal with the distraction of star defensive end Carlos Dunlap's decision to get behind a wheel while allegedly intoxicated. Florida will miss Dunlap's NFL-sized talent on the field.

GAINESVILLE – The early Tuesday DUI arrest of star defensive end Carlos Dunlap has left Florida dealing with a major distraction during the most important week of the season.

The Gators are moving on without him.

Dunlap will not play in Saturday's Southeastern Conference Championship Game against Alabama, coach Urban Meyer said after Tuesday night's practice.

Dunlap is suspended indefinitely after police found the talented junior intoxicated and asleep at the wheel of a halted 2000 Chrysler sitting through multiple traffic-light cycles at a Gainesville intersection, according to a police report.

Meyer said after Tuesday's practice the incident is "stunning" because Dunlap has never been a problem child.

"Carlos obviously made a very, very poor decision," Meyer said. "He's not going to play."

Dunlap, a first-round NFL draft talent with seven sacks on the season, had the clutch of the car in gear when police turned off the ignition and awoke a "very groggy" Dunlap at the 200 block of Southwest 34th Street at around 3:30 a.m., according to the police report.

Dunlap showed obvious signs of impairment, the police report states, including bloodshot eyes, difficulty conveying basic information and the smell of alcohol on his breath. He was booked at 5:52 a.m. after refusing to submit a breath test, failing to keep his balance during sobriety tests and remaining "very compliant" with officers, according to Gainesville Police spokesman Keith Kameg.

Dunlap's father, Carlos Sr., told the Sentinel he asked Meyer early Tuesday if his son could play against Alabama despite the arrest. Meyer told his dad he didn't think it was possible.

Dunlap went out with teammates to a midtown Gainesville club and was two blocks away from his house when falling asleep, his dad said. Dunlap asked the officers if they could "let me walk home," his dad said.

On his own recognizance, the 6-foot-6, 285-pound Dunlap was released from jail on Tuesday afternoon and faces a second-degree misdemeanor charge of DUI.

"You think you're in control and the next thing you know you're in trouble," said Dunlap Sr., a bail bondsman from Charleston, S.C. "I am dumbfounded right now. He's always been so anti-drug, anti-drinking. But it's not what you do; it's how you respond to what you do."

Florida is used to dealing with distractions this season, from a flu outbreak in the locker room to Tim Tebow's concussion to Brandon Spikes' eye-gouging incident to a staggering offense in October.

Through it all, the Gators are 12-0 and playing for a third national title in four years.

"We've had distraction after distraction," Meyer said. "This is a rather serious one. It is a distraction. Sometimes this team has found ways to get a little tighter with distractions. We've had a few of them."

Junior Justin Trattou, a key player at defensive end and tackle, will start in Dunlap's place. Redshirt sophomore defensive tackle Jaye Howard should also see time at end, Meyer said. Other backups at the position include junior Duke Lemmens and sophomore Will Green.

Linebacker Ryan Stamper said an elite defense – one that allowed 118 points all season – must remain steady.

"We've been doing it all season," Stamper said. "Guy goes down, guys step up and make plays."

Meanwhile, Alabama players claimed Tuesday they are too focused to be out at 3:30 a.m. this week.

"I believe everybody was in their bed," Alabama running back Roy Upchurch said. "The boss, he's not with all that."

Sitting this guy is the right course of action. Given the situation, Meyer had no choice but to suspend him. Too bad for the player.... stupid mistake. But the bigger picture is he needs to learn from this: bad decision = consequence.

Meh. His hands were kinda tied on this one. Now, Carlos Sr. is the one that should be seen as the idiot in this. That's such nice parenting right there. I can see why Junior made such a smart decision. As for Meyer, I will withhold judgment on him until I see what he does with this...especially if they win and go to the NC game.

Reminds me of the holy saint Tom Osborne and that RB he removed the suspension from right before their NC game... I never looked at him the same again.

So if he lets his starting defensive end play in the most important game of the season so far, Meyer is a Dill Josh Gordon but if he sits him out it's no big deal because his hands are tied.

All together now--"We hate Meyer!"

Help me find where dad is an idiot.

It's not hard to imagine how Florida star defensive end Carlos Dunlap is feeling this week.

"How would anyone feel when they have the golden opportunity God has given them to be on such a platform, and then the situation is taken from you, whether it's your own doing or not?" his father, Carlos Sr., said Thursday.

"Carlos is very, very disturbed about this, but this is something the lord has placed in his hands."

Dunlap, 20, was arrested early Tuesday morning in Gainesville on DUI charges. Police officers found him slumped asleep over the steering wheel in his 2000 Chrysler while stopped at an intersection. Tuesday afternoon, Urban Meyer suspended Dunlap from Saturday's SEC Championship Game against Alabama.

Dunlap Sr., a bail bondsman in Charleston, S.C., said everyone in the family is still in shock over the incident. Dunlap, a junior, has been a model citizen in his three years at UF, never once getting in trouble with the Florida coaching staff or legal authorities.

"I still can't believe it. I'm still waiting for somebody to wake me up," Carlos Sr. said. "He's the one that kept me grounded all my life. He's always been the one that wanted to tell everyone else what not to do, and lead by example. He's not the kid you saw in the paper. He's still a great kid. Somewhere, something went wrong."

Meyer expressed similar shock on Tuesday.

"Stunning is probably a good word," Meyer said. "Young guys make decisions all the time. This one's a serious one."

Dunlap Sr. said his son, who leads the Gators with seven sacks this year, has been an emotional wreck since the incident.

"He's very loving and caring, and concerned and worried about how people perceive him," Dunlap Sr. said. "This is something we have to work out in the court of law, but in the court of love, Carlos is very torn. But he will bounce back from this. We're a strong, surviving family."

Dunlap loves the Florida football team too much to be anywhere near the Georgia Dome on Saturday, his father said.

He will watch the game with his family, either in Gainesville or Charleston or perhaps somewhere in Atlanta. But Dunlap knows that he needs to stay away from the team this week.

"We don't want to do anything to hurt the University of Florida football team," Carlos Sr. said. "We love the team to death and we don't want to be any distraction. We want to be a complement to the team, not a hindrance to the team. Our presence at the game will not be what the team needs to be focused on."

The arrest could hurt Dunlap's NFL draft value should he decide to leave UF after this season. Dunlap began the week at No. 3 overall on Mel Kiper's Big Board on ESPN.com, and fell to No. 17 after the incident.

But Carlos Sr. said Dunlap is only thinking about one thing right now – finishing his degree. Dunlap is on track to graduate next December.

"We came to the University of Florida for a four-year education," Dunlap Sr. said. "He has another year in school to go. Everybody's talking about the draft. We're not talking about the draft. It's never even been a thought. We as a family never even sat down and talked about leaving school."

"My son's job this year was what they were talking about – finish the mission."

The first part is correct... if he plays him, he IS a Dill Josh Gordon... but, being as obvious as that is for Meyer and his image, he really had no choice. The second part of my comment doesn't mean "I hate Meyer!" I actually respect his football acumen.

Okay, thank you for the follow up on his dad. He sounds like a more reasoned person in the follow up article you posted (and honestly I was basing my opinion on the original article as i really didn't care to delve into the background of a players dad on a team I root against.). My comment was based on this, from the first article:

Dunlap's father, Carlos Sr., told the Sentinel he asked Meyer early Tuesday if his son could play against Alabama despite the arrest.

You must admit, taken out of context for his life, this just sounds like another football father that doesn't consider life outside of what his son can do for him on the field.

I confess, the rest of my original comment was really more of a segue to point out how important winning has become in spite of everything else using Tom Osborne as a prime example... and my disgust with him and others like him.

Um, basically. Well, not so much no big deal but sitting him seem like the only reasonable thing to do. I'm sorry, but I don't think people should be lauded with praise for doing what amounts as the only responsible thing to do.

Hey, I went all day with out spitting in anyone's face. Do I get an award?

But we know that there are coaches and have been coaches who would have allowed Dunlap to play--particularly in a game this important. Meyer could have simply said that the team is handling this internally and Dunlap is a good kid who made a mistake. Then weathered any criticism and gone about his business. Instead, he suspended the teams sack leader from the most important game of the season (to date).

I will give you the Hyperbole Award, but that's only because I like you.

Yes and any coach who would do so is a total freaking sleaze. So, if your point is that Meyer is not a total freaking sleaze, I'm not going to argue.

Oh, and his hands were pretty much tied considering how poorly he handled the Brandon Spikes deal. So, if there was one coach in America who was basically duty bound to suspend the next player who committed any transgression of consequence, it was certainly him.

I understand your point. Well, sort of. However, what doesn't change is the fact that Meyer is simply doing what he should be doing, nothing above and beyond. And that is all I'm trying to say.

There are certain choices that one can make that either define us as a hero or just like everyone else. Others that define us as either a sleaze bag or just like everyone else. This would certainly qualify as the latter.

I dislike Florida and Meyer at a level slightly more than the approporiate level for dismantling my team handily in the NC game a few years back. But I dont see what the big deal is. A coach snapped at a reporter??

I do wish Shake the Gilligan hander woulda stayed retired though.

ETA i love the filter. f0cker becomes shake the gilligan hand? genius.
