Goopster24
Pro Football Talk Link With the NFL scuttling supplemental revenue sharing and Minnesota facing a ten-figure budget deficit, the planets could be getting a bit closer to aligning in a way that sends the Vikings to a new town. Presumably, to Los Angeles. Sean Jensen of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports that the league's refusal to continue with supplemental revenue sharing will cost the Vikings $15 million to $20 million per year. And so, if the extra money to help make the team profitable in Minnesota won't be available, the Vikings might have to move to a market where more money will come from the local fans and businesses. Like Los Angeles. Complicating matters is the reality that Minnesota is projecting a $1.2 billion shortfall, which will make it even harder for the Vikings to secure public financing for a new stadium. Then there's the fact that the clock is ticking, even more loudly than the biological mechanisms of Mona Lisa Veto. The team's lease at the Metrodome expires after the 2011 season. At that point, the Vikings can go wherever they want, if enough of the rest of the NFL's owners approve. It would be hard to envision enough of the rest of the owners not approving a move out of Minnesota, given that the owners have contributed to this mess by pulling the plug on a revenue stream that is helping to keep the team afloat in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. STL Fan
Send them to San Jose or Sacramento No way either of those cities gets a team before LA when the commissioner's office has always had a boner for that market. Plus they have a stadium plan and a potential owner. All of which means they will have a state-of-the-art stadium and an established team that no one will go to or root for. STL Fan
The 49ers are currently looking at Santa Clara for a site of a new stadium. Is that close enough that they would still be called the "San Francisco 49ers?"
BeeR
Yeah send them to LA, cuz LA has such a fine tradition of supporting and being able to keep NFL teams around. Classic corporate America. Short-sighted and generally stoopid as hell. Not to mention that the "LA (anything other than Rams)" is enough to induce a power puke. Ursa Majoris
Apparently Gov Pawlenty called Zygi Wilf over the weekend. Zygi has been pretty vocal recently about his need to have us pony up in order to massively increase his wealth and the government here has been equally opposed for the most part. Still, there are signs of nervousness amongst some politicians now and Pawlenty is likely worried about the Vikings leaving town just as he makes a run at president in 2012. Valhalla
I envision a Browns scenario here...legislator's too proud to grab their juevos forcing a move...culminating in someone to lead an ownership group several years down the road to re-raise the franchise. Small market State where the true citizens of the STATE don't get to vote on anything...Whatever happens I'll still hate the fpackers and be ready to support the VIKINGS, in whatever mode that may be... And according to NFL rules now, the name "Vikings" would stay with the city - as the Browns did. So if they get a team later, you'll have that goin' for 'ya. wolfer
Bah, where am I gonna drive to watch football now? But this is what happens with lease agreements on ancient buildings. The Vikes have tried for a stadium for years....and years...hopefully the city comes up with something because that market is fantastic. Ursa Majoris
Why people anti LA? Am I too young to understand? Many of us believe there isn't a real fan base there. Too many teams have left town for it to be coincidence. I know Pope Flick disagrees so maybe he'll drop his knowledge here later.
STL Fan
Why people anti LA? Am I too young to understand? LA residents are comprised in large part of transplants from all over the country, and they are traditionally not very supportive of local pro teams other than the Lakers, and that's a trendy, see-and-be-seen, front-runner kind of crowd. The Rams had some good success out there as did the Raiders and the fan support was ridiculously bad for a market of that size. The Dodgers traditionally do OK, but again, considering the size of the market the fan support is not great.
