Tiebreaker / Standings rules

Need some help from my fellow Huddlers on a rules decision....

In one of my leagues that I am commissioner of, we just finished up our season, and there were a record number of ties. Never seen so many by teams in a given season........ problem is now, we have an issue over who is going to win a division because of it.....

Here's my issue:

Team A finished with a record of: 6-6-1

Team B finished with a record of: 5-5-3

To me, the team with the greatest number of overall outright wins should win the division. That in my opinion is Team A with 6 wins. The problem is, Team B is stating that his ties count as a 1/2 win each, therefore, he is claiming he has 6.5 wins. Problem is that CBS sportsline has Team B listed ahead of Team A in the standings.......

I understand that if the situation was 6-6-1 versus 6-7, that the team that was 6-6-1 would be declared the winner as being a 1/2 game up on the 6-7 team, because while the total number of outright wins is the same, the team that is 6-6-1 has one less loss than the 6-7 team. However, if a team has multiple ties in the example above, I do not think each tie should be counted as a half win.

Problem is, we do not have defined a rule for this in our league rules, and I cannot find the NFL rules on this either.

My other argument that you shouldn't be able to add up ties as half wins. If you take a tie scenario out even further, it doesn't hold water in my opinion..... Example: If there is a team that is 6-7 versus a team that is 4-4-5, who would win in that situation??? Personally, I think that the 6-7 teams, however, if ALL TIESequal a 1/2 win, and those are added up, the team with the 4-4-5 record would win out over the 6-7 team.

I need some help with this my fellow huddlers!!!!:D

Wow two teams that convert to 6.5 - 6.5

Since you don't have tie-breakers covered in your rules you are screwed. Your opinion on how it should be resolved is largely irrelevant as no matter what you decide somebody is going to be pissed. Arguing about different ways to determine the tie-breaker is really pointless because at this pont the fairest thing to do is a coin flip with both in the room.

The 4-4-5 team played .500 ball while the 6-7 team played under .500. That one is a no-brainer.

Your current situation sucks but they are tied regardless of who has more wins (don't forget that team also has more losses). You guys don't have a H2H or total points tiebreaker rule

NFL rules state that a tie is 1/2 win and 1/2 loss, so the default FF rule is the same. (If you had a defined rule in your league, that would override this.)

So the 5-5-3 record is equavalent to the 6-6-1 record. (and the 4-4-5 record is equavalent to a 6-6-1 record, 1/2 game better than a 6-7-0 record)

In the first case, they have the same winning percentage and have to go to tiebreakers.

I took it as no rule if a game ends up in a tie.

I understood the problem to be one of the teams needs to be declared the division winner and there are no tie-breakers defined in their rules. If this is true then no amount of discussion/arguing will produce a method that both teams will feel is fair (the losing team will feel like he got the shaft as the rule that went against him was put in place AFTER THE FACT). So the only way to break this tie is with some random method ... like a coin flip.

Also ... RIGHT NOW would be a good time to come to a decision on how tie-breakers should be resolved in playoff games ... you know PRIOR to a playoff game being played.

We have tiebreaker rules, but I just wasn't sure how to count the ties initially, but this info helps a ton......

Since these two guys are now deemed with the same record 6.5-6.5, we would normally go to head to head, then division wins.

In H2H - they tied - go figure

In Division wins - they tied - go figure...

freaking wacko! :D

Total points isn't one?

Total points and then the last tie breaker is a coin flip.

If Total points isn't a declared tie breaker, I don't think you'll be able to now omplement it w/o a battle by the loser. My recommendation would be to flip a coin in this case, but get a majority vote on any rules changes going forward...especially playoff tie breakers. We toss out all tie breakers for the playoffs and use most yards from scrimmage by starting lineup including field goals, then coin toss for all playoff ties. Good luck.
