Starters on the Hot Seat

Since we have a thread about coaches on the hot seat, I thought it would be interesting to compile a list of star players that are starters or were starters at the beginning of the 2009 season, but may not be on the same team next year. There are just a few that I've been speculating about.

Marion Barber - with more than capable backs Felix Jones and Tashard Choice in the wings, will the Cowboys be able to justify the expensive price jump from $620,000 in 2009 to $3.86 M in 2010? This decision may be made based on whether there is a coaching change. I think Jones will keep Barber. I think they should consider trading him, and give the reigns to Jones and Choice. The new coaching regime may want Barber. Just wondering if Jason Garrett is still going to be around if they are serious about a new head coach, who might want to go in a different direction that Garrett.

Marc Bulger - Who else do they have? However, if you're losing, then how can you justify his 2010 scheduled salary of $8.5 million. Bulger is only 32. They could ask him to take a pay cut. Rumors are that they will look at Michael Vick. I have a feeling that they know they are still a long ways off and that they think Vick will generate box office excitement.

Jason Campbell - He's starting to play well here at the end, but I don't think Snyder wants him. I see them grabbing a new QB in the draft and Campbell becoming a free agent.

Jake Delhomme - His contract calls for him to receive nearly $13 million guaranteed regardless of whether he's released or not this offseason. It would be crazy to release him. If the Panthers had a first round draft pick, then they could at least draft a new QB for Jake to mentor, but they don't have a first round pick in 2010. Who coaches next year will weigh heavily on Jake's future. I don't see them cutting him when he's getting that kind of money. He'll stay at least as a backup.

Terrell Owens - He says he wants to play for 2 more years. He can still play when there's a quarterback who has a good enough arm to get him the ball. Trent Edwards wanted Owens to come to Buffalo. That seemed to backfire because it just proved that Edwards wasn't capable of getting him the ball. Whether he plays in Buffalo again depends on the new coaching regime, but I think he'll leave. I could see him going to a team that needs really needs a go-to receiver like Chicago. Cutler and T.O. If it worked with Baby T.O., imagine the possibilities with the full grown T.O.

Clinton Portis - When he played, he was adequate at times, but not the stud of the past. Some think that the Redskins should part ways with Portis, but I doubt that will happen because $6.43 million of his $7.195 million base salary is guaranteed for 2010. If you're going to lose that amount of money, you might as well keep him as a backup at least.

Willie Parker - One of my favorite backs, but injuries have hampered his 2009 campaign, so they've gone to a younger back. The question is whether Parker still has anything left. He turns 30 next November. He is in the last year of his contract. I think it's safe to assume that Parker will still be able to play, but he will be fighting for a possibly a backup position on another team. Always possible that a starter gets hurt and he gets to shine once more for a season or two. He had a great run with the Steelers and got two rings during his tenure as a starter. Not too shabby.

LaDainian Tomlinson - Whether Tomlinson wins a Super Bowl or not this year, I think he still wants to play. He loves the game. Turner gives him the ball considerably more than Sproles because they have no other big back suitable to run between the tackles. Tomlinson has proven effective in the red zone. I see Tomlinson playing out his contract in San Diego next year, and the Chargers drafting a running back to be groomed much like LeSean McCoy and Shonn Greene are now.

Brian Westbrook - What he does this post season will tell us a lot. One thing for sure is that LeSean McCoy is not nearly as explosive as Westbrook, but it's still very early in McCoy's career. If Westbrook turns out some big games this season, they may keep him for one more year. He may retire on his own though. Looking at brain waves in a doctor's office can be a scary thing.

Non Starters - but Important Players who may Leave

Darren Sproles- Sproles was not a starter bconsidered to be an every back replacement for Tomlinson. He doesn't get many touches when Tomlinson is healthy. I think the Chargers may have to franchise him again if they can, because they have no other worthy backs. The Chargers will be drafting a RB in this year's draft.

Leon Washington - He never got that contract extension.

Michael Vick - Rumors that the Rams want him.

Not sure if I would call Parker or Sproles starters.

Then I could add Jason Campbell and Marc Bulger to that list to begin to add to that list.

Good additions. I've added them to the list above. The list is made up of starters now or at the beginning of the season. Yeah, you're right Sproles wasn't a starter. Need an asterisk by that one.

The cap hit would be almost $15M were they to cut him...ain't happening.

December 8, 2009

The Washington Post reports that the Redskins will be in line for a salary cap hit of almost $15 million if they decide to cut ties with injured running back Clinton Portis before June 1st.

Our View:Portis renegotiated his contract last season and is due a $9.4 million signing bonus, and most of his $7.2 million salary for next year is guaranteed money. At this point it seems silly for the Redskins to release him, despite how disappointing his 2009 season was.

2010 is planned to be an uncapped year in the NFL.

I was going to post something about MBarber just signing a new deal a year ago and that there's no way they will cut him due to the cap hit, then I remembered there's no cap in 2010. I imagine allot of teams will take advantage of that. We should see allot of overpriced vets getting cut next offseason.

Bob Sanders. Under contract, but injury prone. If there is an uncapped year, my guess is he stays. If not . . .

Marlin Jackson. Last year of his contract. Blew out different knees the past two year. I don't see him being re-signed.

Antoine Bethea. Must be re-signed. Has been an absolute steal as a sixth rounder.

Melvin Bullitt. He's a RFA, and will be tendered, but he'll need a contract if other teams express interest.

Gary Brackett. Needs to be re-signed. Not a Pro-Bowler, under-sized, but very good.

With no cap implications, I think it's going to be stunning how many overpaid veterans find themselves on the waiver wire. Stunning, I tells 'ya.
