keggerz
Pic We probably don't realize how much work it really takes to get stadiums ready for a game after there has been significant snow. The field is just a part of the process. * 1,200 workers are shoveling to clear the snow. And it's a lot of snow. * 25 MILLION pounds of it, in fact. That's 25,000,000 pounds, or 12,500 TONS of snow -- the most snow removed from a stadium in Redskins history. * The equipment being used is the same gear that's used to clear runways at Dulles Airport. * The team consulted with the NFL experts at snow removal: crews from Denver, New England, Pittsburgh, and Buffalo -- and, in fact, sent staffers to observe snow removal in Buffalo last week. Chargerz
Great pics. I remember seeing similar views of Lambeau Field after a snow storm. Incredible how much work needs to be done to clear all that snow!!
irish
Pic We probably don't realize how much work it really takes to get stadiums ready for a game after there has been significant snow. The field is just a part of the process. Definitely very cool pics. However, you're right people don't realize (nor do they care to) how much work goes into prepping the stadium. It works just the same for many jobs. Like people really don't care how much work, time and effort I put into preparing lessons to teach my kids in school for just one week for multiple subjects. All they care about is the end result- the kids improving, just like all the fans care about is the end result- a game being played. Thanks for posting the pics though as it definitely makes you appreciate all the effort that goes into just playing a football game.

Ursa Majoris
And they call for volunteers to help clear the stands and plenty show up. IIRC, they had so many they had to turn people away.

The Waterboy
Don't they have until Monday night? By the way, here's a cooler shot of a snow filled stadium: http://graphics.boston.com/bonzai-fba/Glob...936073_8417.jpg Edited December 19, 2009 by The Waterboy
cdrudge
You'd think that it would have just been easier to just close the roof.
Cowboyz1
I wonder why they don't have a Hot water system that runs down to a drain at the bottom of the stadium? Melts the snow and runs it out in the drain. I know it would become Ice after the game but heating elements in the cement would prevent that would it. Just a thought. Looks like A LOT of work to clear all that snow. I mean A LOT of work. Wow. You would think they would put covers or something over the seats that would help from getting into the seats and stuff to make it easer to clear off. I did a quick calculation and 25 million pounds=12500 Tons=approximately 625 Dump Truck Loads (20 tons/truck)

There are heaters under the field, but that can't melt the snow adequately while still making the field playable. And it would be very difficult to remove the tarp from over the seats if it was full of snow on it.
jaxfactor
And they call for volunteers to help clear the stands and plenty show up. Do they get to watch the game after? Like maybe a place on the sidelines?
keggerz
bored? no, i used to manage an asphalt company and knew how much a dump truck roughly can haul legally so I was curious how many "truck trips" would be needed to remove that much snow is all
