BeeR
I know I'm in the minority but I think this is the right move. He didn't have squat for personnel on that team and in fact it could be argued did well to get the wins he did (they even beat PIT, granted in a down year); give him a chance. People (fans owners etc etc) expect this instant success, and if it doesn't come, hey the coach must suck. It's stupid. I could see if he made a lot of bonehead moves like BB going for it on 4th down or Tomlin's brilliant onsides kick, but..... isleseeya
I think its a bad move simply because it appears that majority of players are not enamored playing for him its ok if people dont like a great coach who gets the most out of them its another to dislike a coach whos track record in wins and losses is very poor like Mangini's Edited January 7, 2010 by isleseeya
BeeR
His overall record in NY was about .500. Strange definition of "poor."

isleseeya
His overall record in NY was about .500. Strange definition of "poor." after a 10 - 6 first year with Jets he went 13 - 19 the rest of the way ...no playoff appearances 23 - 25 overall with Jets throw in 5 - 11 this season and his last 3 seasons coaching he is 18-30 and no playoff appearances overall record of 28-36 overall i think its poor for sure

cdrudge
That's one whole year with a new team which he mostly inherited.Caldwell went 14-2 with a new team...and no previous HC experience... I think he he could have been shown the door, but from a financial and future planning standpoint it didn't make sense: 1. He didn't do very good as a coach. He show signs of improvement though at the end. Plus 1 year isn't much of a fair chance... 2. He still has 3 more years left on his contract. Fire him and you're still left paying him. 3. With the CBA up in the air, it's not clear who will be playing in 2011. Why bring in a new coach with a big salary and have to pay him for a wasted year with replacements in addition to paying Mangini to do nothing 4. Holmgren might get that itch to coach again in a year or two. If Mangini helps turn things around, he looks good. If he doesn't, he fires him and takes over to be the savior (presuming he is successful himself).

hooknladder
we'll see in 2 years when Gruden gets itchy.
MTSuper7
Meh, this kind of seems like the right decision... I mean, though Mangini seems unliked by a lot of the players, they did finish on a 4 game winning streak. Given Mangini inherited a terrible team and has only been there a year, why not give him another year to see what he can do. I'm guessing the players don't really dislike Mangini as much as the media may portray it... Either that or maybe the winning streak got the players to come around a little. Most of what I remember reading about Mangini's antics was in the earlier half of the season. Plus, who would they bring in to replace him? Maybe they can lure a guy like Gruden (or less likely Cowher) after the 2010 season.
