Question for Viking fans...

If Favre retires, and I'm not going to guess, just going with the assumption he does, was his signing worth the 1 year and almost making the SB? I realize my 1st response would be hell yes, but I was thinking about it today, and with the Vikings need of a future qb, are they not back to square 1 as they were before Favre signed? What would the Vikings do now, draft one, trade for one? With the aging Dline, I can see going after immediate gratification, but was it enough for as far as they achieved? Don't get me wrong, GB & Vikes have great teams, something I hope Stafford gives us hope for next year providing we draft or get some quality D players.

After all the Favre bashing, which I don't see deserved in the NFC Champ game, I wanted to know what fans felt. Hindsight , and for the future, would you sign him again and have this great year, or would you have rathered to have acquired someone long term, or groomed for the future? Was laying it all on the line this year worth what you may face next year assuming Favre retires? Congrats on the season you had, well done and envied.

Yeah – I think it was well worth it. They were able to open the whole playbook with Favre back there. With Tavaris and even Sage, they would have had to hold back on what they call. It gave the offense more experience as a whole and maybe the guys behind him learned something. They still need to address the position this offseason. Hopefully they at least know that Tavaris is not the answer and I hope they get rid of him. Maybe they will draft somebody with the 29^th pick of the draft or maybe trade…I don’t know who will be available. It not always easy trying to find a long term QB. A lot of teams go through QB’s until they find one. I hope he comes back for one more year, I won’t hold my breath and won’t sweat over what happens this summer while the media goes bananas over him. Whatever happens, happens – I won’t pay attention to it until game one of the regular season.

 

As for the D-Line it’s not really aging:

I would think it would be worth it to have the kind of season they had. Way better than 8-10 wins. Sitting Tavaris Jackson or Sage Rosenfels for a year did not hinder their development. They are both average to below average, and always will be.

In other news, the rumor mill here in Phiily has Minnesota a likely destination for McNabb should Favre retire. McNabb loved Childress, and vice versa...could be a good fit for 2-3 years.

In other news, the rumor mill here in Phiily has Minnesota a likely destination for McNabb should Favre retire. McNabb loved Childress, and vice versa...could be a good fit for 2-3 years.

Obvious problem with that, though, is you cant take the guy at his word. If he comes out tomorrow and says he's done, can you believe that? If he says he's coming back, can you really believe that? The reality is nothing that he says (and certainly nothing that is speculated by the clowns at ESPTMZN) between now and sept means a lick. And that's the problem for the Vikings. They're now at the mercy of a guy who cant be trusted. The organization is now on hold for Favre's schedule. Its possible he may be forthcoming and let the team know his plan and actually mean it, but nothing in his recent history would lead me to believe that's going to happen. With FA coming up and the draft, etc, the Vikings have some important decisions to make regarding the future of the team and now they've put themselves in a position to let one player influence what they do. And that player(good as he was this season) has shown he has no qualms about taking his sweet time to decide (leaving teams twisting in the wind) or changing his mind(and expecting the team to accomodate him).

 

When the rumors really heated up that the Vikes were going to get him to come here and play, I openly said I didnt think it was a good idea. Not because he wasnt a significant upgrade at the position but because anything short of winning the SuperBowl would leave the team in a very sticky spot with him. I'll fully admit I underestimated how well he'd play, but I think I was right on with my concerns about where the team is left now.

Bass makes a good point about the will he wont he conversation that will take place with Brett. My personal feeling is that he returns.

 

However, I've been hearing the same rumors from my buddies in Philly about McNabb to MN if/when Brett goes. It seems that two camps exist: the first camp thinks that he is an utter failure in big game situations and could NEVER win the game(hi Elway) so his old coach will take him, and the other camp thinks Philly fans don't deserve Dom and he deserves to go to MN and win a SB. Either way a large majority of fans thinks it's time for him to go. I doubt Andy Reid feels that way. Check out this poll in the Philly Inquirer

 

I think my biggest concern with the D is what kind of turnover are we looking at in the coaching staff? Pat Williams is getting up there and it's hard to say how long he has in the league, but if you've been watching all year guys like Kennedy and Evans have been playing a large number of snaps for Pat. The glue of that line is the best D-line coach in the NFL, Karl Dunbar. As long as we have him in that role, the Vikings will always have talented linemen that want to play here and Dunbar will get some of the best tape possible out his players.

Favre will make a decision within the next 2 weeks, and then the Vikings will go from there. Unfortunately, I think he gives us the best chance for success next year but I'm pretty sure he's going to retire. Visions of Drew Brees just keep dancing through my mind.

Pat Williams is 50/50 on retiring, but we still have good depth at D-line, so I wouldn't be worried there.

 

I honestly hope Favre retires, otherwise he won't last another season as long as turnstile McKinney is guarding his blindside. Sure he's not going out on top, but few can. He did have a spectacular season overall though, nothing to hang his head about. Sure he blew it in the big game once again, but hey we're Vikings fans. That's just another season in the life. If it wasn't Favre, it would just have been some other schlep who blew it.

 

I truly hope he retires, I want to see who Wile E. Coyote can come up with to run that kick ass offense that apparently only 1.6% of NFL QBs can run.

The Vikings have to have a win now mentality because they have a superbowl caliber roster. I think if Favre does leave, they will look for a veteran QB who can take charge ASAP.

 

If I were the Vikings, I would make a STRONG push for McNabb and try to draft a late QB prospect and hope that one of the young QBs can learn from McNabb.

 

ETA: this was actually discussed on mike and mike this morning and I 100% agree. They also mentioned Campbell and Vick but I would stay away from those type of players.

I agree it was worth it seeing as how the Vikes did this year. Assuming he retires, someone like McNabb may be able to pull off the same feat. I'm just not sure a qb rotation year in/year out can keep that SB window open. I'm hoping Stafford becomes an elite qb with Favre like toughness/leadership something we've lacked for years, well, lets be honest, decades. From what I've heard, there's no "franchise" qb coming out this year. As a Lions fan, we know all about having different qb's and hoping someone finally pans out. Would I have liked Favre this year if we get as far? Immediate answer would be yes, same token, I am excited to see what we can do with Stafford who has shown some balls, something Joey Hairball never did. I'm fed up with qb roulette, and hopefully now we can focus on our D.

The diffrence I guess is Vikes really don't need to focus any where other than qb, but I'm not sure I'd like the carousel to get me to the SB. As a Lions fan I don't want to see Favre or McNabb twice a year and much rather see Sage or Jackson. I'm curious to see what will work better, us having our so called leader, franchise qb, or the option of trying to have a temporary already proven qb. I'm even more curious to see what the Vikes do if they had won, or do win the SB next year for qb. This is with the assumption any qb with Favre/McNabb age would immediately retire and go out on top with a SB win. I guess my question is, are they mortaging the future as it seems to be with quite a bit of young talent on the offense?

Throw all this out if there's a lockout in the future with the cap issues and with that in mind, I would have done the same exact thing they did.
