Swashbucklers
Wondering what people's thoughts were on recruiting classes. Early results are in, so how did your team fare?
Perchoutofwater
Texas did OK overall. Still missing the true stud RB. Traylon Shead was a very good RB in high school, but I've heard he may be moving to the other side of the ball at UT. I think Rivals have Jackson Jeffcoat over-rated because of his daddy's name. A solid class, but nobody there that you can just say is an automatic 1st round pick 3 years from now.
Rockerbraves
LSU lost some good out of state recruits, but is having a surprisingly nice day today getting a couple off the wall 4 star out of state recruits.

Gonkis
From everything I've read thus far, Florida is doing very well. That may be an understatement. They may have the best class ever (on paper for now, of course). 16 of the ESPN top 150, and 4 five start recruits. Wow. Michigan just got Demar Dorsey, the stud safety prospect out of Florida. Michigan got one of the most exciting players from down here in Drew Dileo. He's not a big kid, but has that "it" factor.

Perchoutofwater
Just curious as to what future potential draft round has to do with a good recruiting class... Nothing at all. I'm just saying there are some people that you know are going to be special, that are going to be 1st round NFL picks the day they sign their letter of intent. Past longhorns like this are Earl Campbell, Ricky Williams, Sergio Kendell, Brian Orakpo, etc.... I'm just saying I don't see a stand out like that in this crop. Square
Maybe it's just me, but I don't buy most of the hype of the 3,4,5 star recruit stuff. I'm sure statistically they do fair better but they are far from accurate at predicting the future. I like Nebraska's class well enough. They want tough guys that are going to work hard and learn. We missed on a bit of a long shot chance at Owah (the big DE recruit from Oregon) but ended up with everyone else we thought we were going to get (or had a chance at). I suppose I'm still a little burnt from all those years of Callahan recruiting. His recruitment classes always had high star numbers but they just didn't end up being that great on the field. So Nebraska's class is ranked 23rd or so nationally but I'm not really worried about it. I think the coaching staff knows what kind of people fit and can develop the talent they get. Seahawks21
U-Dub did well. A little shallow on the higher level recruits, but loaded itself with quality guys. Sark finally got us back into SoCal, which is going to be HUGE in the next few years, especially if USC starts to falter. With up to five guys being able to enroll early, they figure to extend this class to 28-30 players. From 0-12 to a top 15 class in less than two years is pretty amazing. Besides, how can a class with a QB with the last name of Montana not smell like greatness? I was really surprised that Arizona didn't do better. A desirable location and a 2nd place finish in the Pac-10 should have led to much bigger things. Oregon State continues to be at the bottom of the Pac-10. I just don't think they'll ever be able to recruit. It is a real testament to Riley and his staff that they keep churning out quality team after quality team, simply by coaching up their underwhelming talent. Rockerbraves
Kadron Boone LSU steals: Heading into the day, LSU had a good class, but somehow there was a spark missing. Several sparks came Wednesday. The Tigers stole four-star defensive end J.C. Copeland from Tennessee, four-star Jarrett Fobbs from Texas A&M, four-star Kadron Boone from Texas Tech and the gem of the day - J.R. Ferguson. Though Ferguson was not committed elsewhere, there wasn't an overwhelming sentiment that he would end up in Baton Rouge. His relative surprise tops a phenomenal day by the Tigers. I agree other than Oline. Id rather have 1 star back running behind a 5 star line than vice versa. That has been the death of the Aggies since Fran came. BS Miscreant
Although it's nothing in comparison to the "national rankings" and "star" ratings of the aforementioned programs, I am quite pleased with USF's 2010 bunch. Holtz did a very nice job under the circumstances and if nothing else gave some pretty clear signs as to the direction we're headed. The gems of the entire process, so to speak, are 4-star Juco DE Claude Davis, Todd Chandler out of Miami Northwestern and Terrence Mitchell, one of the top CBs in the country, who was stolen away from FSU after a home visit by Holtz. As for the direction of the team, after some waffling on the part of the player, Holtz pulled an offer off the table to a local 3-4-star recruit QB(6-1/185) and soon thereafter went out and signed a QB from Georgia (6-4/225). In the previous weeks, he went out of state and signed a couple of 6-6 to 6-8 ish, 330lb o-linemen. He also was able to hang on to nearly every previously committed player that included a couple of RBs, one of which started for a Juco national champion and another was the leading rusher in the state of Florida. All in all, I'm good with the hire thus far. Regardless of record, if my Bulls are more consistent and disciplined next year and quit beating themselves with penalties and turnovers I will be a happy alumnus and fan. A desirable location and a 2nd place finish in the Pac-10 should have led to much bigger things. Seems like it isn't until the 2nd recruiting year that most programs benefit recruiting-wise from a successful season. Especially if they follow it up with another good season. In Arizon's case, it may take winning the PAC 10 championship to really boost recruiting. As nice of a place Arizona might be to live it's not exactly a place that gets national recruits excited. Where did the QB that Holtz told "to hit the road" end up signing? Is Holtz making a staement & are the Bull fans behind him a 100%? Pulling a local kid's offer is risky. Or does Holtz run a completely different kind of offense that requires a different kind of QB?

The 4 star recruit from Bradenton, FL (Brion Carnes) signed with Nebraska. Rivals had him ranked as the 7th top dual threat QB in 2010. Carnes is second cousin to former Nebraska (legend) Tommie Frazier (previous to Tebow-era, Frazier was one of the most winning-est QBs in college football). Yep and with a sophomore in BJ Daniels(roughly the same size), who's a better athlete with a bigger arm, already there I don't hear much complaining about the move. One issue it did raise though is that the whole thing upset the Manatee coach and they regularly produce high caliber athletes. Carnes is a loss from the perspective of his athleticism and truth is he likely would've played another position. A lot of the chatter locally revolves around whether Daniels will stay at QB. The guy is scary good in the open field. Edited February 18, 2010 by BS Miscreant

The guy is scary good in the open field. Yea, it doesn't sound like the Manatee HC was thrilled with the way things went down. (bold is mine) According to Manatee coach Joe Kinnan, South Florida informed Carnes of the move about 30 minutes after he arrived in Bowling Green, Ky., where he had an official scheduled visit with Western Kentucky. South Florida also left a voice message on Kinnan’s office phone at the school, which did not endear the long-time coach. “I’ve been doing this a long time and dealt with a lot of class programs before, and nothing like this has ever happened,” Kinnan said. “That is not how things are done. They never set a deadline or anything. They just said they were filled up.” Kinnan said there are about 15 other BCS schools that are interested in the multi-talented Carnes, among them are Cincinnati, Clemson, Georgia and West Virginia. “Odds were he probably wasn’t going to go there anyway,” Kinnan said. “But I’ve lost a lot of respect for the South Florida program.” From this. Regardless of what he ends up playing, it was a good sign for Nebraska. After having a QB transfer last offseason and being stuck with a 2nd string guy vs. a true freshman, we had a pretty solid team except for the QB spot. Considering Nebraska went 10-4 and lost 3 games by 2 points or fewer, an athletic QB could have really made a difference. I think we have as many QBs on the roster as we've ever had (which is good for us).

Did it ever cross this guy's mind that maybe Holtz caught on to that vibe and pulled the offer so he could go get another player instead of wasting the opportunity on floating an offer that would eventually fall through. Seriously, how can you lose respect for someone for making a decision that is pretty smart based on what you yourself saw coming?
