Ted / Mike

Recommended Posts

I've helped coach some high school ball, and we ran a 4-3 defense - which breaks down as such:

In a 4-3 defense, you have Will, Mike and Sam. (Weak Side, Middle, Strong Side)

Mike is your most dominant position in IDP - He sits between the tackles and his sole purpose is to stop the run, and sometimes cover backs out of the backfield. Because of this, he is often a tackle machine.

Will is the next most valuable in IDP because his job is to cover the outside gaps and contain the run, and also cover backs out of the backfield - giving him lots of opportunities to make tackles.

Sam is more than likely playing over the TE and staying with him in man coverage, limiting his ability to make tackles on run plays - making him the least valuable LB in IDP.

Now what I've learned outside of coaching on NFLN is:

TED comes into play in 3-4 systems. Ted is better known in the IDP world as SMLB (Strong Side Middle Line Backer), while Mike is your WMLB. While Ted's job is similar to that of a standard SLB, his main assignment on run plays is to clear a path so Mike can get to the ball carrier. He'll get 2-3 more chances to make a tackle a game than your average SLB, but will come no where near the points put up by MIKE.

The only team I've heard consistently use the term TED is San Francisco, as TED is always the other MLB clearing the path for Willis.

As for why they are called these... I think it's just easier to say "SAM" than Strong Side Line Backer.

In a 3-4 defense, the following LB names are generally used

_________ MIKE____TED

_JACK__________________SAM

______ DE____DT____ DE

____LT___LG__C__RG__RT__TE

As a generalization, the MIKE is more productive than the TED and the JACK is more productive than the SAM. Note: JACK is sometimes also referred to as the BUCK linebacker.

Notables MIKEs in a 3-4

Patrick Willis

DQwell Jackson

DJ Williams

Notable JACKs in a 3-4

DeMarcus Ware

James Harrison

Shawne Merriman

But as with any generalizations, there are exceptions to the rule.

Stephen Cooper is easily the most productive ILB in San Diego but he plays the TED position. LaMarr Woodley outshone James Harrison late in the season this year from the SAM position.
