Tannenbaum wants Braylon around this offseason; Thomas Jones not so much

Posted by Josh Alper on February 27, 2010 11:01 AM ET

In the AFC Championship Game, Braylon Edwards showed just how dangerous a weapon he could be for Mark Sanchez and the Jets offense when he caught an 80-yard touchdown in the second quarter.

General manager Mike Tannenbaum wants to see more connections like that between his quarterback and star wideout in 2010 and, just as importantly, wants to see fewer drops from Edwards. Before that big score, numerous touchdowns turned into incompletions thanks to Edwards's mistake-prone paws. Speaking at the combine Friday, Tannenbaum outlined his ideal scenario.

"With Braylon this is going to be a really important offseason for him in terms of being more acclimated with our offense and working with Mark every day. Braylon did a lot of great things for us. It's a really important offseason for him to be with us all the time because I really think it will give him the opportunity to be a better player to be in our program every day."

The only two problems with that outlook are that Sanchez isn't expected to be doing much other than rehabbing from knee surgery for the next couple of months and that many reps at the collegiate and pro level haven't done much to make Edwards better at catching the ball. Still, working on the problem is better than just throwing your hands up and accepting it.

Edwards, a restricted free agent, is expected to get the highest tender from the Jets, which would pay him $5.5 million if he stays and give the Jets first and third-round picks if he's signed by another team. That makes his return to the Jets very likely, something that can't be said for running back Thomas Jones.

Tannenbaum talked about the veteran's future on Friday as well and it sounded a lot like the kind of speech you give about Stu from accounting before giving him a gold watch and sending him off to the golf course.

"All I can say is we were fortunate we traded for him three years ago. He has done a lot of great things for us on the field and even more off the field. He's really been our leader, a tireless worker, he's a really good player and a better person. We have a few more days to get that finalized."

Jones is due a $3 million roster bonus and has a $2.8 million salary for the 2010 season, all but ensuring his departure unless he's willing to take a pay cut. For Jones, the question would likely be if he'd rather take the cut in New York or take it somewhere else because he's probably not a good bet to land almost $6 million in total salary with any team.

nothing in there we don't already know. he's either going to have to re-work his contract or he'll be gone.

As a Shonn Green owner, I am hoping he is gone (TJ).

Source: Thomas Jones will not restructure, will be released

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on February 27, 2010 9:00 PM ET

Thomas Jones' successful run as a New York Jet is about to end.

A league source tells PFT's Mike Florio that Jones will not restructure his contract, as the team hoped. The Jets will release Jones this week before paying him a $2.8 million roster bonus.

Jones slowed down towards the end of 2009, but he's run for over 2,700 yards the last two seasons.

We suspect Jones will be more in demand than nearly all running backs about to hit the market, including Chester Taylor, LaDainian Tomlinson, and Brian Westbrook. Darren Sproles figures to get the best contract of the free agent running back crop

Thomas Jones is getting dumped today

Posted by Mike Florio on March 1, 2010 1:58 PM ET

We reported on Saturday night that Jets running back Thomas Jones had declined a request to restructure his contract, and that as a result he will be getting released this week.

Dave Hutchinson of the Newark Star-Ledger reports that the Jets are cutting Jones today.

And so will end Jones' three-year tenure with the team. He rushed for 1,119 yards in 2007, 1,312 yards in 2008, and a career-high 1,402 yards in 2009.

He also has scored 27 touchdowns on the ground in two seasons.

But the Jets also have Leon Washington and Shonn Greene, and as a result they don't need Jones -- and they don't want to pay him a $2.8 million roster bonus next week.

Someone will jump on him, we think. Despite the fact that he'll turn 32 in August, each of his first four seasons featured fewer than 140 carries. So there is still some tread left on the tires.

However, before Vikings fans get carried away about the possibility of Jones replacing Chester Taylor, don't forget about Jones' harsh words for Brett Favre after the 2008 season ended.

We think Jones would be a perfect complement to a draft pick in a place like San Diego. Or maybe the New York-Cleveland pipeline is still open, notwithstanding the arrival of the Big Show.

.................is Shonn Greene a first round pick????

:D ( I really think so....)

I think TJ will be able to get a role larger than that anyway - with someone like Houston.

Schefter took to Twitter again on Monday night and gave his appraisal of the market for Jones: "Best I can tell, there are four potential landing spots for former Jets RB Thomas Jones: Cleveland, Seattle, San Diego and Houston." There is history with the Mangenius and Jones, so we'll see if that relationship affects the negotiations at all.

I'm a little surprised by Cleveland being on this list as i would've thought Harrison might've won the primary job and maybe they would bring in a bruiser type of back. If they brought in TJ, that would deflate his value quite a bit.

A couple of my buddies think Jones will be courted by A. J. I don't see it. A. J.'s thinking youth when it comes to the Bolts backfield.

........Really? :D -'cause i think he is going to be a beast this year.

Agreed on both. I held him on my bench the entire season and never started him once knowing that this was going to happen. Even with an outstanding year as TJ had. That actually only solidified my opinion that he would be a power hungary SOB at the end of his career. He's absolutely going to regret not restructuring his salary when he goes to a team that doesn't offer any such run protection as the Jets did.

Regarding Geene, I think he will have a monster year, but I think Washington starts out stronger than Greene does so keep that in mind when the season starts.

Yep. Why did he only carry the ball 109 times during the regular season? Why did he get dinged during the season, and again during the playoffs? He won't be a beast because he won't withstand a full load.

He won't carry the full load with washington getting probably 40% of the cut but, he will, however, get all the goal line carries and with that offensive line, I still can see big numbers for Greene.

But, it has to be a wait n see.

Really? Not doubting it, but was it on the tv/radio/website?

I was in another room and I thought that's what they reported. I'm going to listen to Sportscenter again to make sure.
