Free agency has in some form or other been around a lot longer than that.

And more stupid statements CH?

There was "Plan B" Free agency, which was limited which started in 1989 but was ruled unlawful in 1992 so the FA system we have now started in 1993 as a result of that. Prior to 1989, players were not allowed to move amongst teams unless they were cut or traded. When their contracts expired, the team still had exclusive bargaining rights regardless of how long he was in the league.

You sure about that, John? Wilber Marshall went from Chi to Was in the mid-80s; the penalty of 2 first-round picks really put a bit of a damper on movement, though.

from wiki: In the spring of 1988, Marshall became the first NFL free agent in eleven years to sign with another team, agreeing to a five year/six million dollar contract offer to play for the Washington Redskins, the team that had eliminated the Bears from the NFL playoffs in each of the previous two seasons.[3] When the Bears declined to match the offer, the Redskins had to give them their two first-round draft picks in the next two NFL Drafts as compensation.

 A set of 7 players including Marshall sued the NFL in 1988 when their contracts expired and won the lawsuit to become free agents. With that, those 7 could try to sign with another team but would get compensated, as in Marshall's case. The NFL's answer was Plan B the year after.

:D no it hasn't.

you complaining about there being no bad free agent acquisitions from before the 90's is hilarious. There was no free agency except for a very few moves and teams had to be massively compensated for signing someone. Plan B free agency was very restrictive and teams had the right to match offers. true free agency didn't start until 1993. so it'd be kinda tough to list bad free agent moves prior to that, don't ya think?

How 'bout this BeeR. Where is your list of bad free agent moves prior to the 90's?

And it was especially funny since you didn't know yesterday was the start of free agency, and posted a question about why all these free agent signing were happening on the same day. maybe we should rename this thread "massive stupidity from BeeR lol"
