I'll be staying in Clackamas, OR and Kent, WA - but have a car, so I'll chase down the best grub,

Is there a place in Seattle called the Red Mill? Seems like I saw a show on a place called something like that - a favorite local burger joint???

I always liked the Montage and the Delta in PDX.

Old Seattle Thread

Most of the information is still good, although I haven't lived there in over 4 years so don't get to all the new hot spots. I'd add Harvest Vine for Tapas though. I was at the Metropolitan Grill last Friday and it was as good as ever.

The burgers that always get mentioned in Seattle are Red Mill, XXX (in Issaquah), and Dick's. There all diner style greasebombs...every one worth eating. "Dick's is the place where the crew hangs out, the swass like to play and the rich flaunt clout." - If that helps make a decision for you.

I can't think of anything in the Kent / Renton area. For the best food, you'll be heading north into Seattle or Bellevue. (13 coins by the airport isn't bad and you get a lot of food).

Clackamas is southeast of downtown Portland. A lot of the great new restaurants in Portland are on the east side but not that far. Toro Bravo is my go-to right now. Great tapas. Tough to get into since they don't take reservations but you can put your name on the list and head upstairs to the Secret Society bar. Beaker and Flask has, by far, the best drinks in town and their food isn't far behind. Pok Pok is also on the eastside and has gotten nationwide attention. Great Thai food.

Portland is a foodcart city. It took me about 2 years to finally break down and eat from the carts, but have come to learn that some of them are fantastic. Don't fear them.

Best burger in town is always a heated debate. My vote goes to Higgins. Higgins is your quintessential NW restaurant. Fresh fish, local ingredients. Farm to Fork is a general theme in Portland and Greg Higgins does it as well as anyone. That said, the restaurant is divided into two sections. The front of the house is a pretty nice restaurant. If you go around the side of the building, you can enter the bar directly and sit back there. The burger is listed on the menu as something like "Fresh Ground and Spiced Sirloin on a Hearty Baked Roll". When you order it, order the "burger".

Downtown, Clyde Common serves good food (including a noteable burger) and good drinks. Ten01 is a block away....more good food. Other top notch restaurants include Beast, Nostagna, Laurelhurst Market (although I think it's better for apps than entrees), Mint (also has a good burger), Andina (peruvian), Kenny & Zukes (jewish style deli), Veritable Quandary....ah hell, there are just too many great places to eat in this town.

Oh! The breweries are also a good bet: Rogue, Bridgeport, Deschutes (which is like my 2nd office) all serve good food.

ETA: Montage is a great late-night spot when you need some jambalaya to soak up everything you've been drinking. It's under the Morrison Bridge on the east side of the Willamette. I keep my wine at a facility about 4 blocks away so end up there quite often after doing "inventory". If you go before 10pm, you'll wait (on weekends anyway), but there's a bar in the back.
