Mike Holmgren addresses Browns QB situation

Sunday, at the beginning of the NFL owners meetings, Browns president Mike Holmgren addressed the current state of the team’s quarterback situation. Here’s what he said about the possibility of drafting Notre Dame QB Jimmy Clausen early: “I wish I liked him more. You know how you have a type of player that you like? It's not scientific. People like him a lot. He'll go high. But it would be hard for me (to take him).”

AP

Jimmy Clausen likely won't be following in Brady Quinn's footsteps in Cleveland.

Holmgren, much like Rex Ryan of the Jets, speaks openly and honestly about his team -- which is not always the best policy around draft time. Holmgren is too nice a man to avoid the truth or tell little white lies. He lays his cards on the table, and now everyone in the league knows the Browns won’t take Clausen.

In the past, Holmgren had a great advantage when selecting quarterbacks since he was the coach of the quarterback, the designer of the game plans and the play caller. But now he’s just the executive making the pick, which is a huge difference, especially when he must rely on others to make his pick successful. Imagine if any other general manager (not coach) in the league brought in former Panthers QB Jake Delhomme or Seattle backup Seneca Wallace to be the new quarterback of the Browns. Their tenure would be off to a dubious start. But since “Holmgren the coach” has a reputation for developing quarterbacks, he’s gotten a pass on any criticism.

The popular theory is that Holmgren is a renowned quarterback coaching guru so he must know more about these players than anyone else. However, the fundamental question is, are we evaluating all these moves based on Mike the coach or Mike the executive?

With Holmgren announcing the Browns will draft a quarterback “later in the draft,” it will be interesting to see if the development he’s used to seeing actually occurs.

Per 97.5ESPN in Philly, its being reported that the Browns are offering TWO 1st round draft picks for Eagles QB Kevin Kolb. Seem awfully steep, but if the Browns are in desperation mode, who knows?

Holmgren needs a west-coast Qb with an accurate arm, which describes Kolb perfectly. I know Reid thinks Kolb is the goods, and now that he is 3-years seasoned, he'd step in immediately and start.

Source to ESPN stated that if the Browns don't feel they can get a QB of value with the #7 pick this year, they may as well trade it for a QB they truly believe can lead them on the field.

Interesting.....and if I'm the Eagles, I make that deal in a minute, and sign Mcnabb to the extension he wants.

First things first, I am a Notre Dame fan. But, for whatever reason I never like Clausen. Something about him always rubbed me the wrong way, could never really put my finger on it. With that said and what I am hearing from Holmgren I am hoping my Browns are blowing smoke. We need a QB in the worst way and like him or not Clausen is an absolute monster. I watched every game Notre Dame played, with no defense, no running game, a marginal line and while missing either Rudolph or Floyd, Clausen went for 28TDs and 4 INTs. Only two of those INTs were actually on Clausen, one went in and out of the RBs hands and the other bounced off Floyd's back while he was blocking down field(Thought it was a run play) Think about those numbers, 28-4 with as much as they threw the ball.

I watch every college game I can and I can tell you that next years class is going to be worse than this one. The only sure pro style QB is Mallett(could be another Bledsoe, cannon arm but a statue that cant evade the rush). Locker is a potential pick, but he will take a few years to groom. One real QB at this point and there will be a number of teams that will be in the market for a QB next year. I am praying the Browns dont pass up the opportunity to land a QB in hopes of landing one next year. Colt McCoy is not the answer either, I like the guy, but he wont get away with being the teams leading rusher and the defenses will be better than the Big 12 defenses that rated in the 90s.

for some reason I see this as them blowing smoke and can see the Browns actually drafting him.

Like I said I am praying you are right. The only thing that gives me any hope is that Seattle went all out for Whitehurst, which leads me to believe they dont think a QB will be there at 6. Carroll was all over Clausen in HS and gave him huge props in college. There is no way they go that hard after Whitehurst unless they think Washington, Cleveland or someone trades up to grab him.

Admit I can't say but is anyone else more than a little skeptical of this....all the jabber that coaches, GMs etc do before a draft is about as trustable as the weather. Is he really this way?

Anyway while I'm not convinced of Clausen being a boom or bust in the NFL, he's obviously a lot better (with at least a truckload higher upside) than what they have. Ditto Seahawks btw. Not getting how a few of you think Whitehurst is all that (but again who knows...).

Possible, like I said there was always something about him that rubbed Notre Dame fans the wrong way. But, the last few weeks on his radio show, Kiper has said that when teams actually sat down and talked to Clausen they came away very impressed. He is very competitive and has dealt with "pro situations" in all the adversity he has had to play through. Kid acted like an idiot when he signed with us, but you have to admit he came through in a complete crap storm.
