DMD Posted April 19, 2010 Share Posted April 19, 2010 Just watching a special on Draft Day trades and they said that the greatest one ever was when the 49ers traded up to the 1.16 and drafted Jerry Rice. The 1.17 team was intending on drafting him. Rice almost was a COWBOY had Walsh not made that trade. Ah Jerry... so close to go to a real team. Imagine the career he could have had... Bill Walsh had to know who the Cowbows wanted...brilliant move... Let's not get carried away, this was 25 years ago and dude went to a pretty small school. In fact, even today with all the media exposure out there, dude doesn't get drafted in the top 10. Rice was obviously a gifted athlete but he wasn't a freak of nature or anything. His career was made by what he did after he was drafted, that being, he worked his ass off, and that's the single hardest thing to predict. The sheer volume of passes the WCO generated pads his stats somewhat. Had he been playing alongside a RB like Emmitt who carried the ball 25+ times per game, I'd venture a guess that Rice's stats would have been reduced some 20-30%...and thus his place as "the greatest WR of all-time" would be out the window. Granted he would not have had a chance to be the most prolific receiver of all time, but he would have played for America's Team which is compensation in itself.
