Scooby's Hubby
Is Dez Bryant going to wear #88, Irvin's number? No way in hell I would ever wear another name on 88. I thought that since Irvin was in the Ring of Honor that they had retired his number, but I guess I am wrong. There should never be another 22 or 88. Scooby's Hubby
What's wrong with 22? that would be Emmitt Smith's. How could another Cowboy wear the all time leader rusher's number? I am strictly speaking of Cowboy players, not the whole league, sorry for any confusion. Edited April 28, 2010 by Scooby's Hubby
Big John
What's wrong with 22? NFL rules state that a WR must wear a number in the 10s or 80s. (Devin Hester can wear #23 since he has an exception since he was a DB and was allowed to keep that number.)

T_bone65
What's wrong with 22? Smith wasn't that good... the guys around him were awesome. DMD, I'm joking, don't taze (ban) me bro! You are missing the
Dutch Oven
Drew Pearson was #88 before Irvin. A lot of people may have felt the same way about Irvin taking his number. Chillax.
MikesVikes
I think the league, (not just the Cowboys) told teams to ease up on retiring numbers. Especially numbers in the 80's.

Bronco Billy
You think if he wore #88 that the team would require him to get some coke from his mom or grandma to complete his contract?
ABearWithFurniture
The Cowboys are the only NFL team with an internal policy of not retiring numbers. There's been so many, many, many great players there through the decades that if they retired all the numbers, today's rookies would be up in the triple digits, and that just wouldn't fit
Duchess Jack
I think they should give 88 to another player - if only to disassociate it from that dirt bag. Made me laugh - his talking about the importance of good character during the draft.
Scooby's Hubby
I just wouldn't be able to wear/buy the Dez Bryant jersey if #88. Any other number for a WR and I am in, but not 88.

DMD
The Cowboys do not retire numbers. If they retired every great player's number, there would not be 53 left over to have a full current roster.

Scooby's Hubby
I will compromise with this, if Jerry will allow the jersey to read "DEZ" instead of Bryant, then I will buy his jersey even if it is Irvin's number 88.

The NFL requires the last name on the jersey except in special circumstances (Such as Karin Abdul-Jabbar had to change the nameplae to "ABDUL" upon a pending lawsuit) so that won't happen. MikesVikes
Maybe he can pull an "Ocho Cinco" and change his name to be simply 'DEZ'... So Dez is already requesting this for his uniform? The boys are going to have a ball with him in training camp.
aggiebones
Most good programs like mentioned before can't retire numbers. Think of all the superstar Steelers? How could you retire just a couple of them. Who would you pick, so they retired none of those from the Super Bowls. But they have retired one and only one player. He just died semi-recently. Any non-Steelers know who? He was my Dad's favorite. Edited May 12, 2010 by aggiebones
