TE Jermaine Gresham (Cin)

Veteran TE Reggie Kelly just re-signed w/ team.

The guy is Carson Palmer's favorite player on the team (I really think Palmer will play better w/ him around). Not a pass-catching threat, but a great blocker in pass and run. And he at least catches what is thrown to him (this was not common last year among TE's)

Also a great leader on team, he will help both Gresham and Coffman learn their trade.

He was out from first week of camp last year w/ a torn achillies, he couldn't mentor Coffman a lick.

Wtih Bengals (HOPEFULLY) remaining a run-first team, I am nevertheless liking the possiblity of:

Kelly and Gresham in 2-TE sets on early downs. Mostly run, but Gresham can burn an LB who jumps too early on the run.

Coffman and Gresham in 2-TE sets on passing downs, especially 3rd and middle yardage. Probably pass, but could still run if these guys develop halfway as blockers.

Edit to add - of course I mean Gresham can maybe DEVELOP into an All-Pro. I certainly am not claiming that is coming THIS year.

I dunno. Coming back from an achillies is no small thing. I wouldn't be surprised if he is cut before the season.

There are two overt concerns about Gresham: His recovery from injury and the system he plays in. You can say all you want about CIN not having a stud like this at TE in forever, but the fact of the matter is that you have to have a QB willing to check down to him, since Palmer is a down-field thrower. That isn't to say Palmer won't, because a stud is a stud and Palmer isn't stupid. It's just a matter of how much Palmer is willing to change his large-chunks philosophy. Gresham can't throw himself the ball, and if his targets are in the 70s to 80s, he's going to max out at 50 to 55 catches. The injury? I tend to worry less and less about these every year. What was dibilitating or career-ending 10 years ago is now 100% cuarble in 10 months.

The subtle concern is his tendancy to fight catches at times. He's not as sure-handed as some of the other TEs in the draft, most notably Hernandez. If he doesn't reward Palmer by catching almost every ball thrown to him, Palmer will move Gresham down his passing hierarchy.

But other than those three - really two in my mind - concerns, this guy is everything you'd want in a TE. He's a very capable (but not pancaking) blocker, he runs good routes, uses his size very well, can run the crossing pattern and seam, is a speed mismatch for a lot of LBs and a size mismatch for almost every SS, and once he catches the ball he has outstanding moves in the open field. There's optimisim with good reason that he can be a top 5/6 FF TE in a year or so, and make an immediate impact inthe coming season.

I dunno, Shannon Sharp seemed to be in his prime once hit hit over 30. Then, he was the auditity.

Not really. His best seasons were before 30 though he was still solid into his 30's

stats

but you weren't really comparing Sharpe and Reggie Kelly were you?
