Vincent Jackson - Will He Hold out?

Saw this today. If Jackson does indeed hold out, then Floyd moves into the #1 slot. Is he WR #3 material at this point?

Vincent Jackson - WR - San Diego Chargers Posted 6/8/10 12:38am et

The San Diego Chargers are expected to notify restricted free-agent WR Vincent Jackson and OT Marcus McNeill that they will face a reduction in their tender offers if they do not sign by June 15, reports Kevin Acee, of the San Diego Union-Tribune. Jackson faces a reduction from $3.268 million to $600,000, while McNeill's would go from $3.168 million to $583,000. Sources indicate Jackson and McNeill are prepared to stay away for a long time and possibly into the season.

Huddle Up: A $2.6 million cut in the offer would definitely be a slap in the face to Jackson, even if he's looking at a one- or two-game suspension to start the season. If the Chargers go ahead with that, it wouldn't be at all surprising to see Jackson take his holdout into the season.

Floyd is definitely WR #3 material IF HE STAYS HEALTHY. He could even be a WR #2 if he has the breakout season the Bolts expect.

Whether Jackson and McNeill hold out or not, Floyd is a starting wide-out on a passing team, but his numbers might decrease due to the lack of Jackson drawing defensive attention on the other side and by the fact that Rivers may be getiing sacked from the blind-side more often without McNeill there to protect him.

As a Charger fan I hope Jackson and McNeill sign their tenders, but I understand the business side of the NFL. You'd think, however, that Jackson would sign since his off-field driving woes have generated so much bad press for him and the organization. I think A.J. is VERY unhappy with him.

i like what Floyd contributes to our offense, but he's not a fantasy WR to be counted on.

he's a bye week substitute at best.

he would've come on by now if he were going to be a mid to high calibre fantasy WR. what is he, 28 yrs. old now?

yup.

But for disclosure, I'm trying to pick him up as I already have Naanee, Williams and Ajirotutu. I didn't bother buying Davis as the kid always seems to have something wrong  I think he just got a concussion?

Yes, Buster "The Bust" Davis is hurt again.

We're talking about Malcolm Floyd being an impact player in FF, right? The same Malcolm Floyd who has 97 catches and 9 TDs since coiming into the league in 2004? He's going to pick up the slack if Jackson holds out?

I did not say "impact". I said #3 WR. If you start 3 WR and Jackosn is out, is Floyd and #3? I think so. To me, a #3 WR has the potential to put up decent mubers. I think Floyd can with Jackon out.

If you start 3 WRs, isn't WR3 an impact player in your lineup?

Well, I guess it depends on the size of your league. If it is a 6 team elague, then yes. But if it is a 12 team league, then probably not as there would be 36 WR active.

I thought this was interesting from ESPN Rumor Mill:

Chargers GM A.J. Smith broke it all down for Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune. "It's my understanding we have lost the services of both Marcus and Vincent for a considerable length of time," Smith said. "I certainly am taking them at their word. Therefore, I felt it was in our best interest to act quickly and secure a veteran left tackle. Tra is a talented player that brings us a wealth of starting experience. He will be added to the mix, and we will go from there."

Acee notes that Smith was responding to a question only on McNeill, so his inclusion of Jackson within his rhetoric seems to indicate that the move was bigger than just adding a little depth to their offensive line unit. As Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk notes, this could mean that the Chargers will target a free agent WR next, and he has a certain one in mind (this is a link to a picture of Terrell Owens).

But hold on, says Football Scientist KC Joyner, maybe Malcolm Floyd can handle the promotion:

KC Joyner

Not that much of a stretch

"Consider how Jackson and Floyd's 2009 metrics stack up. Their overall YPA totals were close (11.3 for Jackson, 10.8 for Floyd) and their vertical numbers were even closer (13.1 for Jackson, 12.9 for Floyd). The caveat here is that Floyd posted his numbers on 77 attempts versus Jackson's 110 attempts, but that actually could be construed in favor of Floyd. All he would have to do is extend his performance over the course of 33 more pass attempts to adequately replace Jackson."

I cannot see how Floyd does not catch 70+ balls in a season where Vjax doesn't play.

silly though - because Vjax should be on the field.

Well, even if he signs, there is a strong chance he will be suspended 2-4 games.

Let's assume that VJ is out the entire season. How do the stats breakdown?

1. Does Rivers' numbers drop significantly?

2. If not, who catches what?

Assuming a slight drop, let's roughly say 4000 yards and 300 completions.

Assuming Gates gets a slight bump and a similar bump for everyone else...

Gates 85/1200 -- last year was 79/1157

Floyd 54/900 -- last year was 45/776

Naanee 30/300 -- last year was 24/242

Sproles 50/500

others 60/450 (includes new TE McMichael)

so far, that's 279 catches out of 300. So I have about 20 catches unassigned if Rivers doesn't take too big of a drop from last year. Where do those 20 go? If half go to their so-called WR1 in Floyd, that moves him to outstanding value based on good production of 64/1066... which is only slightly less than VJ had last year.

This is a nice analysis. Rivers loves to move the ball around so I'm not sure Floyd will get the extra 20 or so catches. If there were ever a golden opportunity for another WR to step up, it's now. Naanee and even Davis have shown flashes of production in the past but it's going to be impossible to predict who wins the WR spot. Who knows, even Ajirotutu has shown promise. All I know is Floyd will have some fantasy relevance, the others probably not.

These guys are idiots for not signing their tenders.

Agreed. It makes no sense (to me) but to each his own. At least this gives us all a lookie at Floyd to see if he can pick up the slack.

I heard now the Chargers are open to trading Jackson. I am guessing if this happens, the sky is the limit for Floyd. Of course, I believe if they let Jackson go, Owens will be signed shortly thereafter.

Report: Chargers open to discussing V-Jax

The Chargers have "made it known" that unsigned restricted free agent Vincent Jackson will remain available for trade, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

"Several other teams," reportedly including the Redskins, have joined the Seahawks in expressing interest. Jackson is said to be seeking a long-term deal slightly above the four-year, $47.5 million deal (low on guarantees) that Brandon Marshall signed in April. No-nonsense GM A.J. Smith is apparently prepared to make good on his promise to move on without V-Jax and Marcus McNeil. At this point, a trade would be a lifeline for Jackson's 2010 fantasy value. Jun. 29 - 4:39 pm et

Yup, SD is one team I'll be watching very closely.

Heck, if Mathews hits the rookie wall hard -- and you know he'll be relied on heavily in the first half of the year -- and Shawnbrey McNeal takes the #2 job from Sproles, then SM could be this year's Jerome Harrison/Jamaal Charles for that FF playoff run.

McNeal isn't taking the job away from Sproles. If anything, he's a placeholder for when Sproles leaves via FA in 2011.

VJax and SD wouild be crazy to let this carry on into the season. My prediction is that they will come to an agreement before the regular season starts. VJax can't afford not to at his age.

My prediction is that V-Jax will never play another regular season game as a Charger. A. J. Smith doesn't have a reputation of putting up with crap from players or for being afraid of dealing high name players or letting them go altogether so unless V-Jax does a 180 degree turn around I don't see him coming in anytime soon.

Plus I think Shanahan really likes him and the idea of having Santana Moss & V-Jax as McNabbs primary targets.

It seems to me that A. J. Smith is running one of his best players out of town. Ok, so great, you're a tough negotiator. But you've just made your team weaker. Congratulations!

It's been a thorn in our side ever since John Butler died. His bull headedness has cost us some great talent over the years.

And to make matters worse, I bet if he is dealt to Washington, we get Albert Haynesworth in return. Now that wouldn't be so bad if we were a 4-3 defense. But we are not...Ron Rivera withstanding...he'll be complaining by mid-season.

I understand your point of view. Everybody here wants to see VJax on the field, but Vincent Jackson's off-field antics have made it tough for the Chargers to cut him any slack. On top of that I think his agent is giving him bad advice by having him not sign his tender. Jackson took a $2.4 million pay cut this year and is looking at possibly not making anything next year if there's a lockout. Why not play this year for $3 million and then go for the big payday after that?

Just to clarify, I'm not an AJ Smith hater. But I do tire of his tyrant attitude when it comes to some of the better talent on this team. That being said, this battle is exactly what we DON'T need in the year when the chip is within our grasp.
