Big Ernie McCracken
Watch Welker's ADP skyrocket over the weekend. He becomes a relevant name as WR2 with some risk, but if you're one of the last guys taking a WR2 in a draft and he's there, his upside would be huge. piratesownninjas
He becomes a relevant name as WR2 with some risk, but if you're one of the last guys taking a WR2 in a draft and he's there, his upside would be huge. If he really plays 16 games and isn't slowed down by the knee, he's no where near a WR2. He's a WR1. He missed two games last year, and left early in the season finale and still finished 3rd in PPR formats. If he would have been healthy over those three games, he outscores Moss and Johnson. Yeah but we won't know if he plays all 16 games until the season is over so right now this news makes him a WR2.
MTSuper7
What's the historical precedent for WRs coming off an ACL injury? My guess is that thinking he'll finish the year as a reliable WR2 is optimistic. It wouldn't surprise me if Welker has a harder time coming off of breaks, making cuts in routes, etc. and, thus isn't open quite as often as he was before the injury. But maybe we'll get positive reports from training camp...
3rd and schlong
It's hard to come back from a knee injury, some players are never the same. And welker uses his quick cuts and his agility to get open and to make things happen after the catch, the big question is if he still has that ability or not. stethant
Unless there's some piece of medical information we don't have, this doesn't make any sense. I just don't see him starting the season, or at least contributing in any meaningful way if he does.
BeeR
Yep, there's a reason he's cheap in drafts. This also begs the question about impact to Brady and/or Moss. w/o Welker to steal attention, teams will blanket the #### out of Moss.
bpwallace49
It is simply amazing how quickly sports medicine has evolved. I remember when an ACL tear was career threatening, and a minimum 2 year recovery time to get back to "normal". Now you have guys that can come back in less than a year??? I will wait and see with Welker, as his game is all agility, short routes and quick cuts. he could be tremendous value, or end up having a setback and not living up to his ADP . . . looking forward to seeing him in training camp, as I doubt he will play much in preseason as he continues to heal. Teams have been trying to do this his entire career. There is a reason he's one of the greatest ever.
bpwallace49
hgh It goes way beyond that. I remember when it was "groundbreaking" to have transplanted cadaver ligaments for ACL surgery . . .
loaf
as has been mentioned, his role (slot) requires the quick cuts and slants. I am not burning a 5th or 6th rounder on him this year
gilthorp
Nothing to fear. I'm sure the Patriots coaching staff will be very forthcoming with information about his status.

It is amazing how players can get back on the field that soon but I still think it takes 2 years for a guy to come back from an acl tear. Most of the players who had the injury just didn't seem right their 1st year back.
