Cowboys’ Bryant will catch passes, not carry pads

SAN ANTONIO (AP)—Dallas Cowboys rookie receiver Dez Bryant(notes) said he is in training camp to catch passes, not carry somebody else’s shoulder pads after practice.

When receiver Roy Williams handed his pads to Bryant on Sunday after the team’s first camp session in pads, the rookie who was the Cowboy’s first-round draft pick last April didn’t carry them. Veteran players traditionally hand their pads to a rookie after practice.

“I feel like I was drafted to play football, not carry another player’s pads,” Bryant said. “If I was a free agent, it would still be the same thing.”

Williams said every rookie has go to through such rituals during their first season. He said he carried pads and paid for meals when he was a rookie for the Detroit Lions in 2004.

“No matter if you’re a No. 1 pick or the 7,000th pick, you’ve still got to do something when you’re a rookie,” Williams said.

When Bill Parcells was still with the Cowboys, the team’s top pick was responsible for taking water to the coach during breaks at training camp. Current coach Wade Phillips doesn’t have such a requirement.

While there are some who believe Bryant could challenge Williams for the starting job opposite Pro Bowl receiver Miles Austin(notes), there have been no apparent issues between the receivers.

After camp opened Saturday with a practice without pads, Williams called Bryant a great player and said he was glad Dallas drafted him.

“Controversy is what everybody loves, try to pin him against me, me against him, and it’s not going to work,” Williams said Saturday.

way to put yourself above the team  i hope they duct tape him to the goal post

If it turns out to be ONLY Roy Williams trying to haze him, then it does seem to be a kind of personal gotcha from Roy since there is so much hype about Bryant coming in strong already this off-season. So, if I were Roy Williams I wouldn't try to do anything else... but it would be great if some of the other Veterens on the team ganged up on Bryant and put the rookie in his place.

Dez is just helping out a teammate... He probably figures Roy could use the extra time practicing how to hang onto something.

Funny.

Rookie "hazing" is common place in the NFL. Dez should just carry the pads like many rookies have before him

Accurate.

His job is to be a good football player. He can do that without carrying someones pads. If guys like Roy and others are true professionals, they should just worry about doing their job and helping the rookie out. The whole "earn your keep" crap is pretty old in todays world. Guys like Dez and others, whether their character is perfect or not, have spent countless hours working and training to become good at their craft..... and that craft has NOTHING to do with carrying shoulder pads!

I am actually proud of Bryant for this.

The under-achieving Williams should carry his own pads. Lord knows it's about the only thing he's good at these days.

Who started this rookie hazing crap, anyways?

I mean, I thought this was PROFESSIONAL football, not NCAA, level two.

Forget about the Roy Williams angle, even if as a turd he's done a hell of a lot more in the NFL than Bryant has right now.

What bothers me is Bryant's refusal to perform a simple task for a vet, when every rookie knows full well that there is good natured hazing of rooks by vets. It's a "welcome into the society" stunt that virtually every veteran has been through. It encourages bonding through some mindless and harmless fun at the expense of the rooks, it promotes a bit of humbleness to the rooks as recognition that the vets have been where the rookies haven't yet, and it helps create a pecking order that then changes as rookies prove themselves at the NFL level.

Bryant already has character issues coming in. To see him know that, and then to simply refuse to perform this very simple menial task makes me wonder seriously about him. I don't question his talent in the least, but he wouldn't be the first uber-talented rook to screw his career up by sabotaging himself.

Like you say.... a "simple menial task".....

How can such a task be that important? It has nothing to do with football and this bonding crap that some people use is just an excuse.... if they want to bond, they can hang out at Roy's place or something..... bonding by carrying shoulder pads ????

It's called falling in line, knowing your place, earning your stripes. Not to mention that it's also disrespecting tradition. Shows a lack of discipline and a holier than thou attitude. Doesn't matter that Roy Williams sucks the largest balls in the history of large ball sucking, he should have done what rookies are supposed to do, carry the Vets pads.

Yep, you nailed the real issue here. Unless he is really stupid and/or ignorant (which would create another major issue altogether), he knew that these things are expected of him in camp. That makes this a premeditated move. He knew that a veteran like Williams was going to ask him to carry his bags or do something similar, and he knew that he was going to decline the request. Not the smoothest of moves, especially considering he is coming into a pretty veteran, playoff caliber team. This is certainly a red-flag, and if they don't do anything about this, it could start to escalate. Any of us that played football at even the high school level have had to carry extra equipment as an underclassmen. This is no different. This has been going on since the birth of football. I think it is pretty fair to label him a punk at this point.

Well put. I'm hardly surprised that some don't get it though

I will say I don't think this is a huge thing either way really, and lol @ either "side" trying to make it out like that. But cmon Dez, don't be a prima donna yutz. It's not like you're being asked anything that hasn't been asked of those before you and talk about an easy thing to do. Carry pads. waaah.
