Bradford gets rich

The St. Louis Rams reached an agreement with No. 1 overall pick Sam Bradford on a six-year, $78 million deal, sources told ESPN on Friday night.

According to the sources, Bradford's deal contains $50 million of guarantees and has a max value of $86 million

ETA: These top pick deals are getting ridiculous.

He's basically getting 3.5X as much money as the next 3 QB's in the draft combined...

Tebow Rd1 #25 = 5 yr $11.25M

Clausen Rd2 #48 = 4yr ~$6M

McCoy Rd3 #85 - 4yr ~$5M

The Rams, as bad as they have been, are still going to make a nice wad of cash in 2010. Bradford himself will make them significantly more profitable than they were last season. This is a team with only one other attraction. Fans will come to their stadium and the main attraction at this stadium will be Sam Bradford. You could make a case that Jackson deserves a big chunk of the revenue as well, but who else would you possibly give it to? If you are upset that the NFL is as profitable as it is, don't contribute to the pot! Stop watching, stop buying memorabilia, stop going to games. This is a business, and Sam Bradford is the main attraction of that business, and thus deserves to be compensated like it.

100% disagree. This is about giving a kid more money than a very big % of vets will never see. Sorry. Nobody, not even the 2nd coming of christ in a jersey, deserves that much $ before stepping onto an NFL field.

This kid will bring in way more money than just about any of those vets will ever bring in. Are you ever in your life going to watch a Rams game because of Na'il Diggs or Hank Fraley? Sure, that is a lot of money, but this is a big, big business. The guys that make you the most money should get the biggest piece of the pie, shouldn't they? Yeah, it is awful if he happens to be a bust, but if not, this contract will pay for itself ten times over. Na'il Diggs has had a good career and probably deserves to be compensated, but this is a business, and Na'il Diggs doesn't make his team much money.

And the same fans that will dish out there $ to see Bradford will have done so even if he was signed to a rookie cap contract. Sorry but what he's a Ryan Leaf? Prove yourself at the NFL level first. And the NFL will do so in 2011

I don't begrudge Bradford or anyone else for that matter cashing in on the system. It's the $50 mil guaranteed that's ridiculous. And if you're not feeling my perspective on this just ask the countless teams that would love to trade out of the top few picks because they know they'll have to pony up these astronomical figures. And if that's not enough of an argument go ask the the other teams not in the top few picks who won't trade up anymore because they don't want to be put in that position either.

Again, good for him though. I hope he ends up being worth every penny.

The system is definately broke. It is an absurd amount of money to give someone who hasn't done anything professionally. I agree that the NFL needs to establish a rookie cap. Owners get that and NFLPA should get guarenteed contracts for players.

What chances do you give Bradford to turn the Rams around in the next five years? If you were the Rams owner, coach or Rams fan, how much do you think those chances would be worth?

You are reaching my friend. He hasnt made the Rams a single dime yet. If he steps on the field and pulls a Jamarcus Russell combined with a Ryan Leaf off the field, he has lose them $$$. Whatever happened to prove your worth before signing a contract? Perfect example being someone like Revis from Jets. He was top corner last year, he deserves a pay increase. I think their 1st year should be capped.

At this point, I dont think its JUST the owner saying what is he worth...its like a wild inflation has his 1st round picks and the owners pretty much have to pony up or get hurt. It feels like they are forced to pay this dime.

I just can't see that kind of money for a player they've never seen in NFL action

Fixed. And mean while, many of the players who BUILT this league are bankrupt and cannot pay their medical bills. The insanity of this world never ceases to amaze...

You don't think they've already sold a bunch more tickets, or if not, they won't be able to ask for more money for the same tickets going forward? Ok, lets look at this another way....pretend this was an open market system. In an open market, my guess is that Bradford would go for quite a bit more than $50 million guaranteed if there was a bidding war for his services between the teams that desperately would like to take a chance on him.

Let me clarify that I don't think of this as a blanket response to every situation. When you add in the factors of the current nature of the team, Bradford's chances of success and his potential marketability, you can start to see why he might be worth such a figure in relation to the amount of money an NFL franchise will make their owner.

He might end up being a bargain at that price, but that would be the exception and not the rule. The Rams don't even have a choice in the matter. They are subject to the precedent that has already been set and had to give that contract. If he busts, the franchise is screwed for the next several years.

The QB will always get paid the most, but if there is no wage scale installed, where will it end? How absurd will the contracts become? It makes no sense that a 20-something year old with injury issues has a bigger contract than Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. It's not fair to the vets or the retired players that these kids can come in siphon away all this money from guys who have actually accomplished something on the field.
