Before meeting with Seattle-area media on the new NFL rule changes, referee Bill Leavy (above, right) unexpectedly apologized to the Seahawks for his mistakes in Super Bowl XL, which Seattle lost 21-10 to Pittsburgh.

"It was a tough thing for me. I kicked two calls in the fourth quarter and I impacted the game and as an official you never want to do that. It left me with a lot of sleepless nights and I think about it constantly. I'll go to my grave wishing that wI'd been better. I know that I did my best at that time, but it wasn't good enough. When we make mistakes, you got to step up and own them. It's something that all officials have to deal with, but unfortunately when you have to deal with it in the Super Bowl it's difficult."

The game included several questionable calls:

--- Receiver Darrell Jackson was called for offensive pass interference during a play, in which he caught a Matt Hasselbeck pass in the end zone. Seattle settled for a field goal instead of a 7-0 lead.

--- The Seahawks appeared to have stopped Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger at the goal-line plane on his 1-yard score late in the first half that gave the Steelers a 7-3 lead. Leavy upheld the call after a replay review.

--- Early in the fourth quarter, tackle Sean Locklear was called for holding on a pass completion that would have put the Seahawks at the Pittsburgh 1, poised for the tying touchdown. After the penalty, Hasselbeck threw an interception.

--- Hasselbeck was called for an illegal low block and given a 15-yard penalty on a tackle after the interception.

What's this?

Yeah, yeah, and there is holding on every play that never gets called either.

Quote from Ed Hochuli:

"The league felt, actually, that the Super Bowl was well officiated. Now, that doesn't mean there were no mistakes. There are always mistakes, but it was a well-officiated game."

The Haggans holding call that Seahawks fans whine about:

Refs make bad calls ALL the time that impact the game. Fans, coaches, players and now obviously the Refs need to get over it.

This ref should have kept his mouth shut, but felt his bleeding heart would heal ever so slightly by letting the world know his inner demon. Pretty self serving....

disclosure....I grew up in a small town outside Pittsburgh.

Funny thing is I felt I was over it, but when Leavy apologized I got all pissed off again.

Refs do make bad calls all the time, but they don't always make so many bad calls, all against one team, which all seemingly happened during incredibly important phases of the game, during the biggest game of the year. So, it wasn't like bad calls in "any other game." Any other game isn't still a story 4 years later. Any other game doesn't have a ref, on his own volition, stepping up and admitting to how he negatively impacted the game with horrible calls (4 years later). Any other game doesn't have homers like Menudo countering Leavy's self admission of his mistakes (4 years later).

The Seahawks were the better team, I thought that was basically easy to see. They just didn't make any big plays in that game and the Steelers did. The Seahawks were 4-17 on 3rd downs, and many were drops by Stevens, who the Steelers left wide open, and begged to beat them. He couldn't do it. The Seahawks played one of their worst games of that season in the biggest game of the year. That is why they lost, not because of a 50/50 holding call. The only ridiculous call was the Hasselbeck block below the waist on the interception, and that call had less impact than the rest of them. The Seahawks made no plays on offense, and gave up two big plays to a team that you can't give up big plays to. Sooner or later, Seahawks fans need to come to terms with the fact that the Seahawks went out there and lost that game. They didn't make the plays necessary to win a Super Bowl. They didn't get jobbed, they choked.

On this I completely agree. As far as being jobbed or choking, they are not mutually exclusive.

pretty obvious there is something to this when it is still talked about 4+ years later - on a national level and not just in Seattle. Reality is many people across the country with no ties whatsover to Seattle though the refs at the worst screwed the Hawks and at best didn't give them a level playing field to compete....... which is really unfortunate.

did the refs job Seattle out of a W? no.......did they make it extremely difficult on Seattle with multiple calls that severely effected the game and dictate the overall flow? yer damn right they did.
