I do carry the RIS at one of my places, but was underwhelmed by two beers I tried a few years ago (Juju Ginger and one I can't remember) and haven't made it back to their portfolio. At the very least. +1, Left Hand and Mackeson's are the best sweet stouts in the market, imo. The rest of the Left Hand offerings are just ok, decent representations of the style. I've only had the milk stout but was very impressed. While I do not agree with Loaf, the Polestar Pilsener is god-awful, the other Left Hand beers are decent across the board. I think Great Divide and Breckenridge make better beers personally. The Breckenridge 471 series is excellent. The Oak aged Yeti Stout from Great Divide is to die for. I hear you on Great Divide, most notably the Hercules, which is remarkably balanced for being as big as it is, but, yes, the Yetis in all forms are delish and the rest of the portfolio is very, very solid (Hoss, Titan, Colette...). However, I can't agree with you on Breckenridge. Their stuff seems all decent but nothing ever stands out. And the Vanilla Porter is absolutely not my thing. To be honest, their beers remind me of the fake micro-brews made by the big boys. You know, where they come up with some homey sounding name and make toned-down versions of craft beers. The biggest NC brewery and one most likely to be found there is Highlands of Asheville. I think he does a great job with low gravity stouts and makes some great session beers like St Therese;s Pale and Gaelic Ale. Foothills out of Winston Salem makes some very impressive beers. I love their Hoppyum IPA and their Seeing Double DIPA has a huge following. For my taste, though, the malt still comes across too much for even the staggeringly high IBUs (126) to keep up with. My favorite of their line-up is the People's Porter, which is a perfect example of the style. Dark and aromatic but not too rich and with plenty of hops. I hate that people basically make Stout and call it Porter, because that's not what a freaking porter is! There are some very, very cool local beers here in the Triangle, but I doubt any of them are down in Charlotte. If you see Fullsteam Basil Farmhouse on tap, I wouldn't hesitate. Triangle Brewing Golden Ale. Anything from Aviator, most notably the Hogwild IPA, and Peacemaker Pale Ale from Lonerider. All great beers, but again, very small brewers, some of whom self-distribute.
