We will be staying 3 nights at the Kennedy School Hotel, a turn of the century former grade school converted into a hotel. Hotel amenities include an on premise brewery, a salt water soaking pool, 2 restaurants, 5 bars, including a theater bar, where you can get beer, liquor, and pizza while watching movies on couches. Did I mention they have all kinds of beer brewed on premise. This company has turned several old buildings near Oregon into cool quirky little hotels, originally we were going to stay at Edgefield, which included an amphitheater and distillery (they were booked, probably had to do with Pavement playing there that night). Basically, you carry a wedge and a putter and see how much you can drink. The food at Edgefield is pretty good. The beer and wine....eh. Beer is better than the wine. The Kennedy school is cool as well - Some of the different rooms have different themes. They usually play some pretty good movies. Food...meh. They just had a show on the Food Network - Chefs vs the City that took place in Portland and the chefs were in a bartending competition at the Kennedy School. Kind of surprised a bunch of local foodies as there are definitely better bars, but Kennedy School adds some cool experience so I'm sure that's why they chose it. I wouldn't say authentic spanish, but very tasty. No reservations taken, but you can get your name on the list and head up to the Secret Society bar upstairs while you wait. Beaker and Flask - best cocktail bar in town and the food isn't far behind. A little further south, but still east side - Castagna - great high end food but a little stuffy. June - Just opened and I haven't eaten there yet, but based on the talent they pulled, it has to be solid. If I make it before labor day weekend, I'll report back. If eating in the Pearl, you have a bunch more options: Metrovino - great food although the focus of the restaurant is overpriced wine. Skip the wine, eat the food, and it'll be a good experience. Supposedly, the best bistro burger in town according to a local rag. I haven't had it. Just have a hard time believing it. Ten-01 - Solid food, good bar Fenouil - If you like snobby french food, this places executes well. Again, stuffy, but if good weather, you can sit on the patio next to Jameson park which would result in a better evening. Higgins - (South of the Pearl District) Greg Higgins is the father of Portland cuisine - fresh ingredients, he's been around forever and has relationships with all the top area farms. It's all local and all good. Two sides of the house - up front is the nice restaurant. Go around to the back door to their bar. Good selection of beers and from what I have had, the best burger in town. From your initial post, it seems like you may be interested in beer. In that case, in the Pearl alone, you can hit Deschutes Brewery, Rogue, and Bridgeport. Hair of the Dog is closer to the Kennedy School.
