Elite back or bust waiting to happen?

  1. 1. Where would you take Steven Jackson this year?

    • Top half of first round; he?s elite
      4
    • Bottom half of first round; he?s the best of the rest
      34
    • Early second round; not a fan, but if he slides that far he?s a value
      51
    • Not going anywhere near him this year; he?s a bust waiting to happen
      23

It’s a pretty simple, straightforward question: is Steven Jackson an elite back or isn’t he?

With an ADP of 9—and a draft position in the top five in some expert drafts—the popular opinion seems to be that Jackson is still a stud. After all, he rushed for 1,424 yards (the second best season of his career) last year despite missing one game with an injury and being less than 100 percent in several others.

However, a meager four touchdowns for the season torpedoed his fantasy value. In fact, Jackson hasn’t reached double-digit scores since 2006. He’ll have an inexperienced or rookie quarterback, his offensive line is being patched together in front of him, and there are lingering concerns about the back injury that sidelined him last year.

So... is he or isn’t he?

It is concerning that the Rams will be starting a rookie QB with a bad line. And the entire defense is devoted to stopping him. It bothers me too that he has lasted all 16 games only once in six years. He has a great rushing schedule and can produce when healthy, but he is a risk in several ways that I would prefer someone else take.

It is pretty tough to have a worse situation than he had last year and he STILL ran for over 1400 yards.... not to mention his schedule this year... I think he is right where he should be regarding ADP. If you add a few more TD's to his stats from last year, we're talking top 5 this year.... In a redraft, I'd rank him behind... CJ, AP, MJD, RR, AJ, FG, MT, Jackson... so I have him at 8

I would definitely take him late second/early third because that means I likely already have a "stud" in the fold with most other highly regarded RBs and WRs gone at that point and that would make for a potentially awesome backfield. If I'm picking in the mid to late first round it'd be very tempting to take him early to mid second depending on who I get in the first but I'm certainly not targeting him there because I don't think he'll be there. No way I take him in the first because I've been burned by him before due to already mentioned reasons.

About sums it up for me. I have never had any interest and always nominate him in auctions so others will get him.

Didn't they have a questionable O-line last year and an injury-prone QB who was on a downslide? All the detractors were looking for anything to bump S-Jax down, and all he did was produce 1,700+ total yards.

Obviously, the 4 TDs is cause for concern, but I'm still in the camp that thinks he's undervalued and despite all the shortcomings of the offense around him, he's a RB1.

I said late first, but with more thought, even then I think I'd pass on him. If I took AJ at 1.06, I'd probably take SJ in the second round, but that is the earliest, and only after getting a stud WR.

I'd consider whoelse was available at WR for that pick and even maybe at RB, but if you take a RB mid-2nd round it's almost mandatory that you go SJax.....unless you're just going to take "your guy"

Actually the second half of last year the line was average to slightly above. Bulger got hit a lot because he couldn't get rid of the ball - he was a wreck. If the receivers are better ( with Robinson back and Gilyard making an impact) then Sjax might even have a little more room this year. I definitely share the injury concerns. If it were an option, I'd have voted for VERY late in the first round or first half of the second. That said, my league has more than a couple homers and he'll be gone way before I'd consider taking him.

When he's healthy, he doesn't need much blocking to rack up yards. I wouldn't expect a big jump in TD's though. This team will continue to struggle in the red zone. JMHHO (Just My Humble Homer's Opinion)

Hey, were you at the Minnesota game? That O-line is friggin brutal. If they couldn't protect Bradford from the Min scrubs, this season isn't looking good at all. Yet another GREAT year to have STL in 32 HomAAARRRRs.

I'm not touching SJ this year, unless he falls to lower picks. That was just UG-LEEE.

On a good note...pick up a MIN TE. They were targeted an insane number of times, even with the receivers free and clear. Has Rosenfels shown a fondness for the TE position before?

It was ugly. Smith got schooled and Gilyard wasn't much better. Jacob Bell was out, but you're right, there wasn't much to be positive about. Bradford handled it better than Bulger did, but unless these clowns show that this game was a fluke we could be in trouble. Another problem - play calling (again.) With Jackson out and no other NFL running backs on the roster, they were extremely predictable and had NO running game to take the pressure off. If there is a bright side, it is that with Jackson in there, teams won't be able to come after the QB to quite the extent that Minnesota did.

My 2-14 prediction may be overstating the Rams potential this year.

I would say neither. I think based on history he'll get you to the playoffs but (maybe) not help you much when you get there.

Until the team gets better I'm staying away.

He'll even do it two years in a row for you if you've got him on your dynasty squad.
