delusions of grandeur
From Rotoworld 49ers backup RB Glen Coffee shockingly announced his retirement from football Friday. Coffee was nowhere to be found Friday after missing Thursday afternoon's practice. He released a statement Friday afternoon, indicating that he's "moving on" from football. Coach Mike Singletary runs a notoriously tough camp, but there has to be more to the story here. Coffee was battling rookie Anthony Dixon for the No. 2 job behind Frank Gore. Dixon is now the clear "handcuff" to Gore.
JUMbotron
Anthony, I'm coming for you! Pure handcuff, and a very affordable one at that. He'll probably go undrafted in many leagues unless you have some diehards competing with you. .
WashingtonD
Picked up Dixon in a few dynasty leagues this year...he definitely has some potential....very strange that Coffee would retire

DMD
Maybe he wants to be an artist or a hedgefund manager. Or a go to Africa and build fresh water wells. Or pour asphalt driveways in blistering heat wondering why in the hell he walked away from a $2.5 million contract.

burton
CBS: Coffee issued the following statement about his retirement: "This has been a tough decision for me, but at this time in my life I feel it's best for me that I move on from football. I appreciate what the 49ers, my teammates and coaches have done for me, and I wish them a blessed season and all the best in the future. BearBroncos
Only thing I could think of for such a young player to retire like this would have to be some sort of illness?
bankerboy
With Gore's mileage adding up...and on a team that just drafted two blue chip o-linemen, it just seems strange. Not that $2.5MM us chump change, but this guy was a Gore injury away from a potential large payday.

irish
This is odd but I'm not shocked because I had read before that Coffee just didn't seem eager, as if he didn't want to compete.

Chief Dick
The blurb there says that he is retiring because he wants to become a Priest. Good for him. Takes some guts, and a calling of course, to make that kind of decision.
BearBroncos
Good for him. Takes some guts, and a calling of course, to make that kind of decision. I agree! I'm an atheist but it takes personal conviction to change your lifestyle, going for glitz and glory (2.5 million mind you) to servitude of the church. DMD
I'm surprised the church did not advise him to wait a few years and then come to service when he has plenty to tithe.

The 13ers
Brian Westbrook come on down. Hmm, curious if anyone has or know someone who's drafted Westbrook this year.

Chavez
23 yr olds don't "retire" from anything, they "quit" things. Not that following a spiritual path is a BAD thing, by any means; it just ain't retirement.

Chief Dick
23 yr olds don't "retire" from anything, they "quit" things. Not that following a spiritual path is a BAD thing, by any means; it just ain't retirement. All kidding aside, this actually brings up an interesting discussion. Pat Tillman was called a hero for leaving football to serve his country. Coffee leaves football to serve a higher power and he's a quitter. CaptainHook
Colts defensive lineman did the same a couple years ago. Quinn Pitcock. Drafted in third round and then retired. He surfaced this year in the Seahawks camp, said he was battling depression and an addiction to video games when he "retired".
