buddahj
About three weeks ago we set our draft date. This past Tuesday, one of our owners emailed me to let me know he wasn't going to be able to make the draft this Saturday. His exact words, "I'm out, got transfered today and lost my day off sat". So this left me scrambling to find a replacement owner on short notice. After a few phone calls, we secured our final owner...and everyting was right with the world again. Until today...when the same owner called me to let if know he was back in. When I explained the situation to him, he was pretty bummed. I told him he was welcome back next season, but I wasn't going to take his spot back from the new guy. Did I do the right thing?
Tford
I've run into this a couple times before. Sometimes, it's just guys posturing to try and get the draft date moved. Both times I've left the old owner out in favor of the new guy and both times, the old owners returned to take over new teams the following year. Double Agent
For the first time in 6 years, not all of our guys will be at the draft. We have 2 that are out. Nothing they can do and we cannot postpone it. We're just drafting for them. We have their cheat sheets with explicit instructions on what to do. Bummed but life happens. The 13ers
Tell him he can run the draft board and bring people beers at the draft. Good one! I think once you say you're out, you're out. I can't recall a draft I've had that at least one owner didn't show. It stinks, but what can I do? I tell them and give them a sheet of paper at the draft that states when next year's draft is. I email them months in advance. It's held on the same Sunday evening every year (I moved it to Sunday because no one could ever make it on Saturdays because of their 'higher priority' drafts conflicted). Still, I get people asking me three days before 'when is the draft?' and 'oh, it's Sunday? I can't make it'. So, I now go with the flow. I NEVER help out people anymore. I always ask them to have a friend draft for them or other league-mates. I don't want drafting for another person to affect my drafting.( I drafted for a guy once who won the league and my team stunk.)

Being a commish is a crappy job...but there is a reason some people step-up and do it...we do it because we know the league would probably suck without "us" as the guys running it. Henry Muto
I know how you feel I am starting a new dynasty start up draft tomorrow and because a trade that went down Thursday someone said they were quitting the league so I get a new guy to replace him and the other guy says he is going to stay in now and I had to tell the other guy sorry he changed his mind. HutOne
I run a 12 team league and the 1st 12 people that say they are in thats who I go with. Your situation is a little different by him dropping out after he said he was in but you did the right thing by finding a replacement and letting him stay in your league. electricrelish
Yes. Also water is wet. Also I'd be leery of trying to get the old guy back, frankly. Old guys suck. Don't ever trust anyone over the age of 30, especially if they are a RB.
King Tut
Things can get nasty, I've had to make decisions that caused arguments and fights between friends and that sucks the most. I've also had to kick friends out that were inactive its no fun, but still love being the founder/commish of a very competitive great league. Zooty
Been there. Once spent most of July trying to get a guy to let me know if he was in or not (no replies by email or phone) so I replaced him. Obviously I didn't know him really well but he had been in the league 3 or 4 years. Middle of Aug he calls and asks when's the draft He was kind of mad and I haven't talked to him since. What did he expect me to do?
BeeR
Things can get nasty, I've had to make decisions that caused arguments and fights between friends Which is exactly why I would never be in a league (let alone commish one) that allows the commish much if any latitude there, ie everything is by majority rule. I've been smart/lucky enough to only get in leagues w/adults vs babies pretending to be adults, but did have one exception - someone being such a d-bag that it merited a boot and even then I said either he's leaving or I am, and it's up to you guys, no hard feelings either way. Unfortunately everyone was so lazy or apathetic or whatever that I had to make the call and boot him. To his credit he apologized and all ended well, but everyone else blowing it off was almost as lame as his BS. wth, either participate in the league or don't. If you're too lazy to put any effort into it (setting it up, agreeing on the draft day and paying early enough, etc), go join a free Yahoo league. detlef
Yes it does. The way some carry on and the fact that, as commish, you're basically everyone's b!ch, makes the gig practically undoable. Of course, to those who want a well run league, they practically have no choice. We tried to rotate but there would always end up some tool who was way in over his head and crap wouldn't get done. Regardless, you obviously did the right thing. Understandable that the guy changed his mind and wanted back in, understandable that he was bummed (if by "bummed" he merely wished the spot was still there rather than actually "bummed" at you for not holding everything up just in case a guy who said he was out changed his mind). None the less, it's a freaking game that people play for fun. Everyone forgets this and turns it into a pissing match all the freaking time. And Muto, you never cease to amaze me. Here you are, dude with 35 20-team dynasty leagues with $1000 buy-ins and you let a guy waffle like that? Apparently over some trade he didn't like? Sorry dude, but if you're going to be lord-god-kind of FF, you need to show some stones.
Phazool
I would have presented the issue at hand to the new replacement owner, thank him profusely for being there for you in a pinch and tell him that you are going to give back the spot to the original owner. Chances are the guy is already in other leagues and decided to also do your league because of the urgency you portrayed while recruiting him. How could any self respecting avid FF owner not feel compassion for the original guy. I would think "what if that were me, I would want my spot back." Just my 2 cents... kpholmes
You're the commissioner. You have 10 other guys to worry about as a collective league, and need to keep everyone's best interest in mind. Not just one owner. You did what you had to do.
Bronco Billy
Wow. How did you get Brett Favre to play in your FF league? Nice! (BTW - you did the right thing. You filled the spot beacuse the league doesn't run at the behest of one owner's whims.)

Big Ernie McCracken
I don't understand the posts with descriptions of chasing owners to find out if they'll be participating. Most of the owners in my league have been working on the draft since March and I got started in February. Maybe my main league is an oddity but in 16 years only 1 team has been unable to show for our live draft and had to take a pass. He came back the next year on the stipulation that the league got to choose his team name.
